Grading all of last year's big QB moves

I love how Elway just can’t get the QB position right. I really don’t understand how he thinks Flacco is going to fix anything?

Keeps trying to put a band aid on the position instead of finding his guy and trading up to draft him. Eventually, they will have a new owner in Denver and his first move will either to fire Elway, but if he can't do that, relieve him of personnel duties and keep him as an Executive VP in title only.

Flacco to Denver

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...calls-the-broncos-trade-definitely-desperate/

Joe Flacco's ex-teammate Elvis Dumervil calls the Broncos' trade 'definitely desperate'

Elvis Dumervil spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Broncos. He spent the next four years in Baltimore, where he was teammates with current Ravens quarterback and soon to be Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Dumervil, who retired in August, has weighed in on the trade between the Broncos and Ravens, which will send Flacco to Denver in exchange for a mid-round pick when the new league year begins next month.

It should also come as no surprise to hear Dumervil criticize the trade from the Broncos' perspective and praise the trade from the Ravens' perspective. After all, it doesn't take real NFL experience to understand Flacco's limitations as a quarterback.

On Thursday, Dumervil ripped Broncos general manager John Elway for making a "desperate" trade, but congratulated the Ravens for making a "genius move."

"It's a big gamble -- definitely desperate, no doubt," Dumervil told TMZ Sports.

He added, "I think Joe Flacco needs an offensive guru. I don't think he really had that in Baltimore. ... I do feel that if he doesn't have a coach who can coach him -- the Sean Paytons, the Josh McDaniels, these kind of guys -- he's going to fail miserably in Denver. I think Elway is seeking to try to do the same -- he did a genius move with Peyton Manning. Unfortunately, Joe Flacco is no Peyton Manning."

Paid content by Amazon Not Everything Makes the Cut We’re putting Alexa in more stuff now… But let’s just say not everything makes the cut.

Flacco will not have a Asshole Face or Josh McDaniels in Denver. The Broncos, who fired Vance Joseph at the end of the season, hired Vic Fangio as their new coach. While Fangio has been a tremendous defensive coordinator for the Bearsand 49ers over the past decade (which is why I was a big fan of the Broncos' decision to hire him), he's definitely not going to be Flacco's offensive guru. Perhaps Flacco's offensive guru will be new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, but that's impossible to predict considering he's never been an NFL offensive coordinator before.

In all likelihood, Flacco will join Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, and Brock Osweileras yet another unsuccessful quarterback acquisition made by Elway, who appears to be unable to solve a problem that's crippled his team since Manning retired after the 2015-16 season. Draft pundits have assumed that the Broncos will make a play for a quarterback in this year's draft, and they still could even after agreeing to acquire Flacco, but the fact that the Broncos will be paying both Flacco and Keenum (if they can't trade him) certainly makes it less likely they'll use the 10th pick on a quarterback.

It's not just Dumervil, by the way, who has criticized the Broncos' trade. So has the majority of the NFL community -- and with good reason. Since Flacco entered the league in 2008, he ranks 36th in completion percentage, 55th in yards per attempt, 53rd in touchdown percentage, 28th in interception percentage, and 45th in passer rating among quarterbacks with at least 16 starts, per Pro-Football-Reference. Flacco might be an upgrade over Keenum (key word: might), but if he is, it's a marginal upgrade at best -- one that required them to give up draft ammunition.

Hence the criticism:

It doesn't take a former teammate of Flacco to understand why this trade is not a good one from the Broncos' perspective. The Flacco acquisition fixes absolutely nothing, but adds another mediocre quarterback to their payroll at the cost of a valuable draft pick and cap space.

Downtown Rams Podcast Ep.158 w/ Western Illinois DL Khalen Saunders & Alexis Kraft

Over the next few drafts I would like to see the Rams trade out of the first and pick up extra picks if there isn’t a guy who they love when they pick. If the Rams could pick up a 2nd & 3rd round pick for the their 1st this year, I think I would support that. A trade with Cleveland for 2nd (49th) and 3rd (80th) lines up well. Maybe Miami for the 48th and 78th pick would work.

If the Rams were able to make a trade like this, I would definitely be ok with Khalen Saunders. He’s one of the bigger DTs in the draft, and I think he’s worth the gamble despite facing lesser competition. I could see him being around if the Rams were able to get a mid 3rd round pick.
Agreed, he in my mind, checked the competition box just seeing him in person dominate the elite of the elite at the Senior Bowl. Special talent that I'd love to put on the same line as Donald and JFM.

Jrry32's First Mock Off-Season of the Year

Last offseason Les didn't really have the option to rebuild the edge position for the defense. But after another season where the edge rush fell far short of what this scheme requires, and when considering better options in FA and a first round pick in a deep DL draft... I think Les is going to do much better this time around.

Your approach hit all the basics (with the exception of restructuring Whit's contract to spread that $15M cap hit). But I think it comes up a bit short on the edge, and that's considering that I effin love the Bush and Winovich additions in your draft. If Les goes into this draft without a FA addition at ROLB it's a virtual certainty he'll use the high draft capital to solve it right out the gate.

Another area that needs more attention is Safety. Not only is Stewart mediocre as F, but he's also got poor instincts in coverage and the deep middle which is more of the same. Adding a vet is fine by me, but his strengths need to align with where we need to get better. Yours is the kind of move that might work out, but I think it's a bit underwhelming.

Like your NT addition, and I'll agree that Wade will be all for a guy who can anchor in when he needs to up there and not get washed out. And Groy is interesting, kind of funny how Buffalo matched our offer only to have him not really develop into what they obviously expected. I do like him as an under the radar type addition (he struggled a bit) that will play better than people think for our OL coach.

As always appreciate the time it takes for those, was a fun read. :D

We did make a FA addition at OLB. We added Shaq Barrett. We can't restructure Whit's contract. 2019 is the final year. The only way to restructure it is to extend him. We could do that solely for cap purposes if need be, but I'd rather avoid it if I can. I did restructure Cooks and Havenstein. I just didn't mention it. Both of their contracts are easy to restructure. We just turn the roster bonus into an option bonus and prorate it. That opens up about $11 million in cap room.

As for Darian Stewart, he played extremely well in Wade's scheme in Denver. We're not going to get a safety who specializes in playing the deep middle. That's not what Wade or the scheme want. Wade wants his safeties to be interchangeable. They basically need to be jack of all trades, master of none types. We're not going to go out and sign an Earl Thomas imo. Frankly, Wade has always done well with under-the-radar types. In Denver, it was Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward. Here, we have John Johnson. In Houston, he had Glover Quin and Danieal Manning. In Dallas, he had Ken Hamlin and Gerald Sensabaugh. Other teams tend not to value the skill-sets that he does at safety that highly. That's something he exploits. He's actually quite good at finding converted CBs who most teams would consider to be tweeners (too slow for CB but not big enough for safety).

I appreciate the feedback! Reasonable minds can certainly disagree.

Los Angeles Rams 2019 NFL mock draft roundup: filling vacancies along the defensive front

Nice find Boni. (y)

Honestly I just want an impact player in round 1. Hopefully it'll be a defender and more specifically an edge rusher, but a guy who can give us that quick impact in a starting role is the key. TE is probably the position I'd be most disappointed with given how long those dudes take to develop. But just go get whoever slides, that top player that nobody thought would be there who always seems to be there in any given year.

Five offseason moves to improve the Rams

I hope Whit comes back. First issue solved.

Saffold will give a hometown discount to stay he has injury history and he is over 30 his deal will not be steep Imo.

Trade down unless must have is there. Where we are drafting there are a ton of good prospects at L, edge Safety and Center yes Center

We need a big time olb all the names like Barr, Marshall have issues. Need to sign or trade for a star edge rusher.

Do not re sign Goff yet save the money. We are fine for now.

CJ Anderson I like him alot up to Snead feels if he is worth it.

We need to upgrade one ILb, Edge, S and Center.

We must make our OL better a better Center will help.

Rams are loaded with excellent players at many positions, no doubt...

We see this differently, Frantik.

Ebu is just not good enough. Left side, right side, it doesn’t matter. He's largely ineffectual as a pass rusher and is constantly being washed out on running plays. The tape doesn’t lie.

Now, if Fowler is reasonably extended then that’s one side. But an Ebu upgrade would still be essential. Obo is an enigma at this point. Hasn’t had one NFL snap, which maybe speaks volumes, so he has to prove himself on the field. Problem is that we can’t gamble that he’s a capable starter at this point. In fact, we must assume the opposite. So, another quality starting edge will still be necessary. Trade, FA, or draft, I don’t care. But Snead’s gotta get it done.

I agree that an ILB is also a high priority. It just is. One must come from the outside, one way or another.

Add in a DLreplacement for Suh and a S replacement for Joyner and we’re pretty much set for our starting D. For ‘19, anyway. As in Top 5, I think.

I see a lot of fans putting their hopes on Obo. To be honest, I'm of the belief that there's a reason a guy is a day 3 pick. He might turn out pretty good but we don't know. To go into the season with hopes pinned to an unknown reminds me of the pre-McVay era when all our hopes relied on the draft class to make an impact right away. I'd rather find someone with experience and use Obo as a rotational player. If he's that good he'll work his way into a starter's role.

Downtown Rams Podcast Ep.156 w/ LA Tech EDGE Jaylon Ferguson & Alexis Kraft

Yeah, positions will jockey around right up to Draft, I remember seeing him as a lower projection some time ago.
Oh well as some rise others fall, we just need to find contributors and hope we land a gem or two
This combine disinvite is only going to land him in the right situation mark my words it could be with the Rams.

This ONE play from 2018

Thank you! almost forgot we had so many terrific games this season. Rams were 10-1 when they went into their bye week w/ an amazing win over the AFC Champion runner-up Chiefs. Crushed so many opponents this year. Jared with so many incredible TD throws. Forgot how dominant Gurley was before the bye week, and how crazy good our O was with Kupp in. Thanks again!!!

Favorite? hard to pick.... the Malcom Brown tip-toe TD was pretty cool. Gonna miss that guy if he's not retained.

I had forgotten about that play!!!

The Los Angeles Rams face a ton of questions this offseason that can and will change the direction of this team. I’m confident that General Manager Les Snead, Head Coach Sean McVay and the rest of the Rams front office will do everything in their power to improve this team, but the to-do list is a bit daunting at first glance.

The list can be boiled down to a couple of major categories that everyone can mostly agree upon. That’s the easy part though. Determining what order those issues should be tackled is much more difficult to answer.

I have talked to a bunch of Rams fans - including a bunch of the staff here at TST - and there is no consensus. Everyone has a unique view on how they should be prioritized, and I want your view. Have at the polls below and I’ll dive into the multiple ways to handle each situation as we approach the weekend.

I just love to hate TST.

McCourtys Tell All About Super Bowl LIII

It’s absolutely amazing to me the flak this kid takes. He went from a “bust” as a rookie to a Super Bowl appearance in his 3rd year. How can anyone still not believe in his ability? It’s mind boggling. But I understand because the media needs to keep up the narrative since they started the fire in the first place.

It's because these a$$wipes called him a bust in his first year and now they are emotionally attached to their narrative. They ignore any evidence that goes against their narrative and cling like a leech to anything they believe supports it. They just can't admit they were wrong, so they will desperately look for anything that they believe supports their take.

In short, they are idiots, and furthermore, they are willfully blind idiots.

Jeffery Simmons possible ACL injury

Jrry said it. Simmons has been a model citizen after that, and he exhibited a great deal of remorse and owned up to what he did, unlike certain other college stars (such as Joe Mixon).

He was punching a woman while she was on the ground! Of course he has remorse, it could have screwed up his NFL career. The guy is nearly 300 pounds, how stupid does he have to be to beat a woman, especially while she’s down?

No thanks. I don’t care how sorry he claims to be.

[Twitter] Warren Sharp -- The Super Bowl was lost before the game started

I'll also say this - for as much as I love McVay, I hope this will be a lesson learned. The all 11 all the time stuff is cute, but when our offense goes from elite to awful like it did against the Bears (and to a lesser degree, against the Eagles), that should have been a red flag for him.

Kupp was missing, the most important receiver in the offense, and there was something up with Gurley. Can't judge the offense without them.

Now that he's seen it doesn't work quite so well without them he can work on ways to overcome the situation if they're not available again.
