A few things that I think might improve this Rams team this season…

The bulk of the ‘rebuild’ is gonna have to wait until the offseason when Snead has both cap dollars and premium picks, but there are a few things that I think could be done right now that could make this team a genuine playoff contender.

In no particular order:

McVay should authorize LaFleur to yell in his ear during games whenever McVay goes off the rails with excessive pass calling at the expense of the run. When Rams run the ball, they win. When Rams get pass happy, they lose. It’s not complicated and McVay shouldn’t overthink this. McVay’s willingness to change here is critical to team success. Can’t be overstated.

McVay needs to deliberately focus on enhancing his 12 set playcalling effective immediately. It will only enhance his run game and consequently his TOP, plus give opposing D’s something more to worry about defending. That’s 3 good reasons for it right there. It’s critical that McVay both runs and passes out of 12 sets to be unpredictable to D’s, of course. And I recommend giving this Allen kid some snaps while he’s at it. I suspect that Allen could be a gem if given opportunities. What does McVay have to lose?

Hoecht isn’t working out as an OLB. Square peg meet round hole. Morris is asking him to do things that he’s not capable of doing and that’s classic coaching failure. The solution? Not sure. Maybe Snead can bring in a journeyman? Or Morris can keep rotating players in until someone can halfway play the damned position? But currently Hoecht is an example of Einstein’s definition of insanity, namely keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. Opponents are gonna continue to abuse him as long as he’s playing that position.

Morris should also take a good hard look at his CB deployments. Is Cobie Durant really working out at ‘star’ or slot, or whatever the hell position he’s now playing? And can he even make tackles when needed? And what about Derion Kendrick and his crippling penalties? Witherspoon is shining but perhaps Durant could be better at outside CB? Or Tomlinson? Or Shelley? Shake up that starting CB lineup other than Witherspoon, dammit! What do you have to lose?

Safety is not a major concern but I do think it could benefit from some tinkering to upgrade from Fuller. Experiment with JJ or Lake a little bit. Again, what’s to lose?

Other than possibly bringing in a journeyman edge, all the above moves are internal and could be implemented immediately in the Cards game.

Thoughts?

Totally agree on Hoecht, I was willing to give him a chance and see how he builds into the role but he's obviously out of his element. I'm hoping now that Mathis is healthy we'll see more and more of him, he can't be any worse than Michael.

Another question is why isn't JJIII playing? I would assume he would be the best fit for a star role if asked to do so. Is Yeast really a better option than JJ? I just don't see it.

Speaking of CB's I'd like to see what Shelley has to offer, when on the field he shines, and quite honestly made a play in the end zone against Philly that kept us in the game. Witherspoon is a pleasant surprise I'd have him follow a teams best WR because right now he's the only corner that is consitently doing his job. While I see promising play from Kendrick and Durant at times, it is spotty at best. Maybe they'll continue to get better with playing time, we'll see.
Last thing I'll say about our CB's sans Witherspoon is, why aren't these guys getting their heads turned around when defending? I'm actually surprised that at times because they do have good position on the WR but never turn their damn heads around to track the ball. Is it a young player thing or is it coaching?

As far as your thoughts on McVay and his play calling. I really think it's going to take something dramatic to get him to change who he is as a coach. I know he loves calling plays but lets be real here. This is his first HC gig, and I think for him to change the way he approaches the game one of two things will have to happen. Either he gets fired because of an epically bad season, or he gets pressure from above to do so. It's a two edged sword, because McVay has had such an outstanding record thus far it's going to tough sledding to get him to change. Maybe another losing season will dictate what happens in the future.

Our RAMS

Can play with anybody!!!! That's more than most of you thought before the season started. I'm pleasantly surprised to realize we are only a couple of key players from being a serious contender. A good draft next year will make this team damn scary next year. Don't know if we can pick up anybody this season that could make much of a difference but you have to admit what we do have are coming to play each week. And, this very well could be a wildcard team.

I think we have some decent talent and good coaching. Another solid O-lineman could really help and another decent edge and pass rusher could put the Rams in the elite category again, IMO.

Instant Analysis of Week 5 Loss ...

That was clear. I was at the game and saw exactly that - EXCEPT - for the game plan on defense at the end of the half. There is no way we can expect to win if we continue to allow teams to run down the field to end the half with less than a minute to go. Fucking 36 seconds and we let them score a TD. That is pathetic and good teams don't let that happen.

The offensive game plan was sound. There were three passes that I watched sail right over or in front of an open receiver along with at least two big drops, plus a couple really bad blitz pick ups. It was all about execution. It looked like Stafford was not only off on several passes but Kupp was a bit slow. I just don't think Kupp and Stafford had their timing right (understandable) and that pass to TuTu was just way off target. That was an easy score if that pass is on target.

We simply made too many mistakes on offense and defense to win against a team like the Eagles.
Our defense has been dreadful on drives just before half. Although, Derion Kendrick admitted that he screwed up on the big play to A.J. Brown. He should have played off instead of jamming him and trying to undercut the route.

Draft Steal? Derion Kendrick had a hamstring issue at his pro day

Are you trying to get me flailed alive by the haters by reanimating this thread :) [blue font].

BTW Both have clearly outplayed their draft position and 40 times
Well the Raheem Morris gate comes back & haunts The Rams.
Giving up that TD in the End really sucked. The Rams had to find away to hold them to at least 3.
Seems likes Kendrick is always on the wrong end of it.PI is so subjective. The Robey-Coleman challenge wasn’t a bad rule, except it never got over turned anyway.Still there are some brutal calls that change games.
—Anyways Williams in the Red Zone & short yardage

GAME DAY MNF - Packers at Raiders

Not for nothing but the Packers' Edge Rashan Gary is a free agent after this season.

I have never been a big fan (better talent than player in my opinion) but Gary is good, and should be a top free agent. When he was drafted, Gary was vocal about wanting to develop a "Brand" and had ambitions beyond football. Los Angeles could be attractive to him; and it's not like there will be a ton of quality young free agent edge players out there.

Green Bay may try to hold onto Gary, and could even Franchise him, but the Packers did use a first round pick this year on another Edge in Lukas Van Ness.

Just Saying.
Imagine if we had Max Crosby and Donald on the line

20 Random Too Much To Tackle Thoughts

Do we hate the “Brotherly Shove” because it works 95% of the time or because it’s an unfair advantage (like spring boarding off the back of a lineman to try to block a kick)?
Doesn't seem right you have 4 guys behind the ball carrier pushing him in. One guy, no problem. Seems like taking advantage of the way a rule is written. Not the intent of the rule. Remember when Bilacheat all of a sudden in a playoff game against the Ravens, was loosing and started having an eligible player announce he was ineligible? Just cause the rule doesn't say you can't, shouldn't mean you can.

Philly Game: Oline pass pro review.

This is a big part of it. We were so one dimensional which let them completely pin their ears back. And when you consider that Philly has one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL, then in the circumstances, I thought to o-line did pretty good. I give them a B. You're not going to keep the QB completely clean against teams like Philly most weeks. Sometimes you'll manage it if your o-line is really on. But most weeks, it just won't happen. And if you become predictable as only passing, look out.

I agree with those that say we need an upgrade at RB. But I also am left wondering, which is the biggest reason for our lack of running game threat: not having a dynamic RB, the o-line not being great at run blocking, or the run game not being something McVay excels at (or cares to commit enough time to?)? Not sure we'll ever get an answer from the outside looking in as fans. I do think all are a part of it. I'd probably rank Williams last on that list of problems despite wanting an upgrade. Other teams plug in UDFAs all the time and manage to run the ball well. I have seen enough from Williams to think he could do the same within a system that fosters it, even if he might lack the explosive runs.

Could be, the run game is not something that McVay excels at (or cares to commit enough time to), THUS the Oline is not great at run blocking, and the Rams don't have a dynamic RB.

River's 1'st 2024 Mock pre-season ...

A couple of revisions to my earlier Mock :

As far as Free Agency goes, no changes. I'm still using our much increased CAP next year for an elite EDGE, a high quality CB, and a very good ILB to couple with Ernest Jones.
Due to the development of Alaric Jackson and our drafting of a top LT with our 1'st round pick, I trade Havenstein and permanently move A.J. to RT. I move Van Jefferson at the trade deadline for an extra 6'th round pick. I'm also re-signing Dotson while allowing Anchrum to hit free agency. LSU QB Jayden Daniels has quickly moved up the charts these last two weeks and that is reflected in this draft revision.

3b) From Havenstein trade - C/RG (Bryce Foster, Tx. A&M). Anchrum also becomes a free agent following this season. We don't really know what we have in UDFA McAllister yet. Foster is a big strong multiple IL player much in the same vein as Steve Avila imo.
