NFL discussing banning the Hip-drop tackle

That doesn't make any sense. Changes for player safety have been a part of the sport since the league has formed. I wonder what your opinion would've been back in the day when they changed from the leather helmets.

While I'll agree that some of the rule changes made in the name of player safety have made playing the game more complicated than what it needs to be, other changes have definitely decreased the number of injuries overall. That's great for everyone.

You arrived at that conclusion based on discussions about potentially proposing a rule change to a certain style of tackling? What?!

My point was and is. There are other ways the NFL could increase player safety instead of adding what will end up being subjective in the eyes of many. Referees are already overworked and vilified as it is. And we want to add more?
You want to less knee injuries? All grass fields. Which in my surprise they passed this year. But how long did it take them?
Less pads. Want to eliminate players leading with their heads? Watch rugby, it's common knowledge that they sustain less head injuries.
Want less ankle sprains and further knee issues? Change their cleats.

The answers are there but the NFL brass thinks their uniforms look cool with all their pads and helmets... marketing 101

Rams select Byron Young (OLB) with the 77th pick.

This guy is exactly what The Rams gave needed for a while.

Finding a big DE/OLB type is PERFECT. A real nice fit coming from the RDE spot.

I see Hoect moving more to LDE spot where Floyd usually lined up. His size helps run support.

Solid FOUNDATION Player so far.
Think my first evaluation was spot on.Following it up with Kobie Turner has added so much the Defensive(front) side.
Matias is a guy who will be such a nice addition vs. say Nick Hampton who was drafted ahead of Puka.
T.Tomlinson might get some extra playing time against Pittsburgh

Southern Cal. 20, Notre Dame 48

That may be, but he is a wizard in the pocket, there is no denying that. IMO, he is still the best QB in college. What I cannot figure out is, how in the hell can USC not figure out how to play defense? I cannot remember a time when they had a even average D, and they don't recruit poorly on D by all metrics.
I was going to give USC's defense a pass last year because the prior USC coach couldn't recruit worth a shit both offensively and defensively. And he was a horrible coach too.

I figured it would take two recruiting years to get their defense playing better. Offensively - Riley had a lot of transfers come over last year and had Caleb.

Well - this year I have to blame Grinch - he is a piss poor DC and needs to go.

Some Stats for Rams/Steelers (ProFootballReference.com)

Stats below are for Rams through 6 games, and Steelers through 5

Steelers defense:
Ranked 22nd in Run defense ; allowing 144 YPG
Ranked 12th in Pass defense ; allowing 246 YPG
Ranked 10th in scoring defense ; allowing 22 PPG
They have allowed 8 Passing TD's
" " " 4 Run TD's
Blitz: the Steelers blitz 36% of the time.... there are only 5 other teams that blitz more

NOTE: their defense is allowing more yards per run between the 20's, but is more stout in the Red Zone and allowing more TD's versus the pass

Steelers Offense is ranked 30th ..... not much to report here

Rams defense:
Ranked 24th in Run defense ; allowing 122 YPG
Ranked 14th in Pass defense ; allowing 208 YPG
Ranked 9th in Scoring Defense ; allowing 19.5 PPG
4 passing TD's
6 Run TD's
Rams blitz 20% of the time ( same percentage as the 49ers )

Rams offense is ranked 10th overall

NOTE: some of the stats are skewed due to the Steelers playing 1 less game ;
example: Rams have only allowed 10 TD's through 6 games, yet the Steelers have allowed 12 in just 5 games.

IMO, if the Rams Offense can stay out of long down & distance, they should keep the Steelers pass rush at bay. Also, their "D" has allowed 30 points to the 49er's and the Texans. They have not faced a passing attack like the Rams yet. So, I see their Pass D taking a hit this week.
Good stats.

Other variables to consider are the running games and QB's we have faced.

The ground games we have faced have been pretty good with the Niners and Eagles and Colts. Seahawks, Bengals and Cards are also respectable. So, I think our run defense is probably closer to decent/solid.

The QB's faced were rather subpar thowers - Burrow still injured and not able to throw long. Richardson, Dobbs, Hurts (more of a runner, one read thrower), Geno in gm1 and Purdy who has been solid short but unable to connect long. So, I would say our pass defense is not quite as good as the 14th ranking shows.

Steelers pass defense is assisted by the aggressive blitz mentality that puts fear in QB's and offensive coordinators.

Overall we are a better team, but could get outcoached if Mcvay doesn't be careful.

Now that a few are thinking of playoffs

I had our ceiling at 8 wins. And the floor at 5 wins. I'm gonna have to revise that now. The next 3 games might tell us more. Pittsburgh and Green Bay are winnable games. Dallas with their pass rush may not be. If they win two of the next 3 I see no reason we can't win 10 games. But they gotta beat those teams that are mid level or worse like Pittsburgh and Green Bay.
I may be in the minority, but I feel like we can handle the Cowgirls. IF WE COMMIT TO THE RUNNING GAME.

Although we don't have Anderson nor Gurley to run for about 250 yards like that glorious 2019 playoff win, the concept is sound. Run some clock. Play action some Kupp-o'- Puka / Coop-o'-Nucua with a pinch of Tutu, and let our defense force Dak into his usual 3 or 4 dumb plays a game.

I like our chances.

20 Red Dead (2nd Half) Redemption Thoughts!

He didn’t perform up to his draft status and he wasn’t going to get resigned. I think that’s pretty much it, I haven’t heard anything from him despite being passed on the depth chart by Puka and Tutu. The rams didn’t have to trade him considering what they got but McVay wanted to give him a shot to play, giving him a chance at a better contract after the year when he’s a FA.

I compare it to Cam Akers. Why did The Rams get rid of Terrell Lewis as well? There’s a time to move on & trust.
The move is going to clear salary cap,& is another reason the trade made sense.I’m 100% Van Jefferson wouldn’t have been happy at all sitting the pine & his attitude wouldn’t have got any better.

Rams trade for OL Kevin Dotson

Dotson's been fantastic and they would be wise to re-sign him.
They've got Havenstein under contract until the end of 24.. if you're bringing in someone young.. why not start them out with a real support system on your side? Also.. you'll be paying a rookie contract on that RT... so you can afford to pay your RG.

I know Jackson can be upgraded.. but, really.. he's been absolutely serviceable.. and, most importantly, solid in pass protection.

GAME DAY SNF - Giants at Bills

Live in NYC, and the New York media has been vocal about Justin Pugh today.

The veteran OL was out of football, and on-the-street. Pugh was not with any team this off-season, or in any training camp this summer. He was done. The Giants have been decimated by injuries to their OL this season ... starters and back-ups have gone down, with practice squad players needing to start.

Pugh was signed last week, started at guard last night and moved to tackle when the starter was injured.

Several in the local media, including Boomer Esiason, have been all over this AMAZING, INCREDIBLE STORY!!!

And all I can think is Oday Aboushi, Ty Nesekhe and Matt Skura ... Three different veteran OL the Rams signed off-the-street last season, who all started multiple games last season.

The same NY Talking Heads in 2022 discussed how bad the defending champs were but rarely mentioned their OL injuries.

I guess a one-off Amazing Story in NY carries a ton more weight than THREE Amazing Stories in L.A.

Jim Everett on Rams draft of Old

Tye Hill over Haloti Ngata, Claude Wroten over Elvis Dumervil, Adam Carriker over Darrelle Revis, and Brian Leonard over Eric Weddle. I was a fucking teenager, and I was all but screaming for us to draft Ngata and Dumervil. And then I saw Revis still available. And we took fucking Carriker instead. And then we one-uped our stupidity by taking a fullback over a stud safety to pair with Atogwe.
