Bonsignore: Loss must be the fuel Jared Goff takes into the offseason

A game like that has to motivate you and I bet it does Goff, but how does McVay adjust? The bears, Eagles and Saints aren’t going anywhere and they shut down the Rams offense as well. Or does he think that with Kupp the Pats strategy of doubling Woods isn’t as effective. McVay believes in his system but if you learn anything from Belichick it’s that you have to be flexible. The Pats played man all year til yesterday and the rams weren’t ready. If you don’t give them something different you’re in trouble cuz they are gonna break tendencies. They’re playing this bear front so you want to get the edges right? I think McVay needs to be more willing to get out of 3 wide.

How was officiating?

There were some crappy calls - particularly the "hold" on Gurley's big run in the 4th - but I don't think we can blame them for the loss at all.

Our offense had trouble all day, no doubt, but at the moment we were finally moving the ball and about to take the lead, the refs called the phantom hold on Gurley's run (Announcers commented it was not holding). We can't blame the refs for all the poor offense, but they did change the score at that time. We would have scored 3 or 7 and taken the lead. Who knows what would have transpired after.

SB 53 Sean McVay post game

The fact that Bill talked to him all season kind of shows he’s savant. You think think Bill’s going out of his way to talk Hue Jackson after every game.
He just got schooled by a professor.
Another thing. They didn’t make any adjustments, that’s what everyone was griping about with the Chiefs. We did the exact same thing.

Yea I wasn't overly worried until they came out and sucked on that first drive of the second half. That was sort of where I realized this might not go our way lol. Oh well. Shit happens they'll be back next year.

For a good laugh

So as i was heading out of the game last night I was encountered by another "Rams" fan. This is how our convo went...

Him: Rams!
Me: Hopefully next year.
Him: Next year will be good bc we'll get Fitzpatrick.
Me: ...what?
Him: Ryan Fitzpatrick. Goff sucks, he's sucked all year. You dont think Fitzgerald is good? Youre crazy man.
Me: :smh: No dude...
Him: seriously, just think about it.
Me: :starts walking away:
Him: BULGER!!!
ME: What???
Him: Bring back BULGER!!
Me: holy crap....

Sheesh! Isn't it weird and surprising to see a "fan" with below zero knowledge of football?
I realize he'd been drinking but alcohol is usually truth serum, meaning he probably believed the stuff he was saying. (rolls eyes)

Well... Not exactly the way I wanted to end the 2018 season...

But it is what it is.

Here are a few short and sweet thoughts this morning.

Belichick and his asst coaches came up with a brilliant defensive gameplan vs these Rams. They accomplished what I thought would be impossible, to hold the Rams to 3 points. I’ve gotta tip my hat to them. Amazing.

And it was no fluke, either. Ram receivers weren’t open, OL wasn’t protecting or opening holes, Goff was pressured and confused. Belichick managed to reduce a 32.9 ppg O into a train wreck. Smh.

Late in the regular season I felt confident about our O and worried about our D. Roles completely reversed in the SB, huh? Shows what I know. Lol.

Goff had a bad game but he’s taking too much of the blame, IMO. There’s PLENTY of blame to go around in a game where Rams only allowed 13 danged points. OL missing blocks and not picking up stunts, receivers not catching contested balls or even getting open very often, Gurley and CJ failing to make plays too often, etc...

Mostly it comes down to the fact that the genius Belichick outcoached the budding genius McVay on the world’s biggest stage.

But McVay will learn and adapt. So will Goff. These two are just getting warmed up in their respective NFL careers. I don’t think that this is their last SB appearance, tbh.

Gurley has not been himself for about 2 months. I don’t care what he or anybody else says. The evidence has been right before us and seems undeniable. An unfortunate time to be hurt, to say the least. I hate to sound like using this as an excuse, but it’s a fact that the elite Ram O runs through Gurley. When he’s firing on all cylinders he’s the OPOY.

Sure, I’m disappointed. Who wouldn’t want to win a SB? Especially one where the Ram D only allowed 13 points? But I’m relatively serene this morning.

2018 was a helluva fun ride and our future is bright. The most important pieces are in place and will remain so for years and years. Rams will be a big factor in playoff races for years and what more can a fan ask for?

This post mortem will wrap up shortly and then we will have a shortened FA and the draft to occupy us.

This is a wonderful time to be a Ram fan, don’t you think?

Terrific, well thought out comment...We'll done IMO...

Congrats

To all you die hards, congrats on finally having a team back in the playoffs.

I haven't watched a Rams game since they left St. Louis and haven't watched a single NFL game this season. Safe to say I'm not exactly rooting for the Rams success these days but I am happy for all you fellas that have something worth watching after all these years!

Hope all of you are doing well in your personal lives. I've been busy with a toddler and my wife is pregnant with our next one. I miss having a team to drive downtown and root for but overall I have to say that my Sundays are much more productive and fulfilling!
Nice to see a returning poster, even if it might only be short-term.

Where was the creativity?

We got Hoodie'd on offense. Honestly i expected that would happen early. Belichick is too good and a master evil genius with 2 weeks preparation defensively.

I did expect McVay to find something that worked eventually though. Find a way to get a first down. Find a way to sustain a drive. We battled in the 2nd half and did manufacture a TD but Cooks dropped a tough but catchable ball. Gotta make that play though in those circumstances. This was a neck and neck football game on the scoreboard all the way.

I think the performance of our defense in a losing effort upsets me more than anything. It sounds like McVay feels the same.

Coach will learn from this and he's still evolving folks. SB losses can have lingering effects on players coaches as we know. The (first)focus goal next season should be IMO winning the division. I think if you aim too high following a defeat like this you tend to invariably find ways of stumbling along the way in terms of the path and steps it takes to reach that high point again.

Win the division
Win a playoff game
Win another playoff game
Win the big game

instead of...

We got to get back there and win it this time.

A Pattern?

I’m going to go Full Martz and say we ran the ball too much. NE was geared up to shut down the run, something they did very well against other teams. All but one or two of the handoffs to Gurley and CJ put us in a bad down and distance. The offense only started to click when Goff took over. Game plan should have built around him, not the rbs. He won the Saints game, he could won this one too with a little more help. Where were the plays for the TEs? Why AGAIN does McVay keep calling for throws to our shortest WR in the end zone?

Super Bowl Streams???

Yeah working for comcast. Today was my 1st day on my own after 12 weeks of training. Went well except for the game, I had a few learning moments today but my boss said not to worry about it. I met my workload for the day, and he doesnt expect me to walk on water, lol.

My supervisor bought pizza and told me to come in about 1/2 way through the 3rd qtr. He said I did my quota for the day and to come enjoy the SB. Then he found out I am a Rams fan and felt bad that I had to watch that last int that pretty much did us in.
Well, good luck in the new job and OUCH on that interception.
