When Sean goes back and grades his team

I'm not sure that was the main plan. It worked out last year because the Rams made trades and Suh was cut (no comp picks). They have to consider the comp picks but, they also have to make smart moves. The odds are they let Suh walk so they have one comp in the bag. Saffold and Fowler are wait and see. I do agree that they will look for cheaper replacements from cuts but, also free agency. They also have to watch the cap space. Since they traded for Goff and others the Rams have been finding ways to replace traded draft picks. Looks like in 2020 they gave the Jags their 5th rounder. Other than that pick they now own all their own draft picks after this year.

I feel confident that was the main plan last off-season. And I expect it to be the plan again this year. It wasn't a coincidence that Suh, a cut, was our main target. If we sign a big-named FA, he's going to cost us the Suh comp pick.

FrantikRam mock offseason 1

Trade:

Brockers to the Giants for 4th and 5th round picks (both comp picks) - Giants have a ton of picks and despite likely getting a rookie QB, with Barkley and OBJ in place and other vets on D, they want to try to win sooner rather than later.

Cut:

Barron
Sullivan

The above moves give us a total of about $50 million in cap space - figure $10 million for the rookie class and a few moves during the season, and about $5 million for the RFAs, which leaves us about $35 million to spend:

Re-sign:

Suh - 2 years $22 million - make most of this guaranteed and Suh would take it IMO
Saffold - 3 years $30 million
Shields - 1 year $1.5 million
Barron - 1 year $3 million - after being cut and gauging the market for him, he has no choice but to take whatever the Rams are willing to pay him

Free agents:

Ryan Groy C/G - 2 years $3million - this one makes so much sense it would be shocking if it didn't happen
Darian Stewart S - 1 year $5 million - another one that makes a ton of sense

Before going into the draft:

Projected Starters
QB: Jared Goff
HB: Todd Gurley
XWR: Brandin Cooks
ZWR: Robert Woods
SLWR: Cooper Kupp
TE: Tyler Higbee or Gerald Everett
LT: Andrew Whitworth
LG: Rodger Saffold
C: Austin Blythe vs. Brian Allen vs. Groy
RG: Joseph Noteboom vs. Austin Blythe
RT: Rob Havenstein

5T: Ndomukong Suh
NT: Sebastion Joseph-Day
3T: Aaron Donald
WOLB: Obo Okoronkwo
Mo LB: Cory Littleton
Mike LB: Mark Barron or Micah Kiser or Bryce Hager
SOLB: Samson Ebukam
RCB: Aqib Talib
LCB: Marcus Peters
SLCB: Nickell Robey-Coleman
FS: John Johnson
SS: Darian Stewart

K: Greg Zuerlein
P: Johnny Hekker
LS: Jake McQuaide

Up until now I would LOVE this offseason because it comes with starters that I would be confident in at every position except our NT and OLB - I also love the upgrade of Noteboom at guard and Blythe to center - these moves give us a ton of flexibility in the draft, and the trade of Brockers adds an additional two picks.

Draft picks:

1st (pick 31)
3rd (pick 93)
3rd (comp)
4th
4th (comp from Brockers trade)
5th
5th (comp from Brockers trade)
6th
7th (comp)

Nine draft picks while likely adding more comp picks next year for Fowler and Joyner leaving, plus having our starters possibly set - this seems exactly what Snead and McVay will go for this year. the defense was amazing in the playoffs save for Joyner and I want to run that back for the most part.

Round 1 - Dexter Lawrence, DT Clemson - trying to guess who will or will not be on the board right now at 31 is an exhausting exercise - but Lawrence might be and if he is, I would love to plan him next to Donald and Suh on the DL. This will also lessen the blow when Suh leaves the following year or year after.

Round 3 - Lil'Jordan Humphrey, WR Texas - I've felt consistent in this thought: Kupp going down just can't kill the entire offense like it did at times, and unlike Reynolds, Humphrey played from the slot quite a bit and should be comfortable there. Also provides us with KR and PR ability.

Round 3 (comp) - Christian Miller, EDGE Alabama - a guy with the tools but hasn't consistently put it together.

Round 4 - Beau Benzschawel, G Wisconsin - powerful guy but needs a lot of work - good developmental guard to have who can fill in as needed and potentially take over for Saffold or Noteboom when he moves to LT.

Round 4 (comp) - Jarrett Stidham, QB Auburn - between us needing a backup QB and Snead's Auburn connection, I imagine if Stidham is still on the board here we're probably running to the podium.

Round 5 - Iman Marshall, CB USC - will need some work obviously, but his size/athleticism will be enticing here.

Round 5 (comp from Brockers trade) - Wyatt Ray, EDGE BC - seems like a guy that will test well but his production was just okay - looks like his film isn't great either, which is why he could fall this far.

Round 6 - Isaiah Johnson, CB Houston - not a lot to like about him except for his size - at 6'4", worth the flyer with what is essentially a 6th round pick to see if he can learn from our talented CB room. Any pick at this point is going to struggle to make the team.

Round 7 - Trace McSorley, QB PSU - this pick, whoever it is, will be the longest of long shots - Rams will likely take a priority UDFA here, but I say bring McSorley in - his athleticism is intriguing at the very least.

As a base for critiquing any off season plan, I recall McVay and Snead talking about bringing in vets and justifying trading picks for them because, they cannot afford to wait for a rookie to develop, when they are a playoff team. So starting any rookies or inexperienced players doesn't seem to fit that line of thought, still.

I'm not in the trade/cut Brockers camp. I'd try a restructure. Brockers isn't a NT and if Suh only stays one more year, or not at all, Brockers still will have value to this team. The guy that I wanted the Rams to sign was Linval Joseph, but that ship has sailed. He wasn't that expensive and could play the Nose. I don't think Joseph Day would cut it as a Brockers replacement. A vet Nose Tackle would be nice.

I would prefer to replace Barron because I don't think he's durable enough for the position, though I like him when healthy. He and Brockers played well in the playoffs. It's hard to replace a vet on a playoff team with a rookie.

I could see signing Groy. Blythe was exposed by N.E. So was Sullivan. I'd prefer Paradise if he is cut, which is rumored as likely. There may be a few Safeties cut that are better than Stewart. I am not a big fan of Stewart's hit or miss tackling. But, I do like the idea of a vet like Glover Quinn, another likely cut, who has been mired in a loser and could be thirsty for some winning and willing to give a discount.

I still think Barron needs replaced, even if restructured. A stud like Mosely would be huge there. But unlikely due to expense. If there is one player I'd love for the Rams to spend on it would be him.

It will be interesting to see if they can resign Fowler or choose to franchise him for a year. Of all of the need areas for future replacements, DL and edge are well suited to find help in this draft. Another vet who could be cut is Terrell Suggs. He can still produce and is an intelligent football player and a leader in the field.

The draft would be alright, except the QBs. Don't waste the picks. Any rookie is going to have trouble cracking the starting lineup, even Lawrence. Back to the QBs; I don't like Stidham, and although I love McSorley's winning ways, I don't see how he is a fit for the NFL. I don't think he can play any other position, and as a QB his accuracy was often poor in games. He's too small too. But I do like the idea of a backup who can run. It really can throw a defense off when a running QB comes in, in place of a pocket passer. I remember when Seattle had Seneca Wallace, and the Rams Defense didn't look prepared for his style of play. Any draft prospect the Rams draft would be based on potential development. High upside guys that aren't quite there because the lack something. Kind of like Noteboom lacking physicality and strength.

I'd love it if Perez was given another shot. It'd be a nice story and he's looking good in AAF. This year's QB class isn't very impressive. Finding a legit replacement for Mannion could be tough. I think the Rams will allow Mannion to test FA, because he's nothing special.

Jrry32's Second Mock Off-Season

Isn't that what the front office have been doing the last couple of years. Overlooking the draft and instead finding players that can make an impact now, and not later. I think they are realistic about this being the window now, and Kroenke wants that ring, let's not be fooled.

I think you are being fooled. Look at the guys they've acquired for significant draft compensation: Sammy Watkins, Brandin Cooks, and Marcus Peters. Every single one of those guys was still a very young player when we acquired them. You're way off base if you think we're going all in for a ring. We want that ring. We're going after it. But we're building a core that will keep winning.

Sully should NOT start for this football team. O-line is so vital for any team's succes. We need to upgrade on that position. Sully should at most be the backup if he doesn't retire. My dream is Matt Paradis from the Broncos.

Quinn was a liability, we need somebody who can also do a job against the run. We saw how easily teams ran against us this season. Adding him and losing Fowler would make this team weaker. I fully expect a 1 or 2 rounder can come in, and do a better job than Quinn at that position, with the hugely talented group in this upcoming draft.

I am also of the opinion that Sully isn't our guy anymore, but McVay highly values his football IQ, experience, and communication skills. But if we do go away from Sully, we have two in-house options in Austin Blythe and Brian Allen. There's no reason to go out and pay for a starting Center.

Well, our run defense got even worse this year without Quinn. Some of y'all overrate the hell out of Fowler based on some timely plays.

Again I just don't see why you want to hang you hat on a guy who haven't proven he is up for the task. Falcons easily saw that experiment didn't turn out the way they wanted. He was abysmal at the position, that's the only thing I can see through PFF and what Falcons writers have told. There are so many good options at safety this year. Brian Pool maaaaybe could have been a chance if the group was not loaded with talent in FA and Draft.

I don't care if you see it. I do. Having the balls to take a risk on a guy based on a projection is how you hit a home run in this business. And if we strike out, it's a low-risk proposition. I'm not afraid to go out on a limb.

Look, there’s gonna be a ton of offseason moves necessary...

That's really a different topic though Les. The tells and whatnot.

When the Pats loaded up to shut down our 1-2 receiving options, that's when a TE can really make a difference. Our TEs weren't ready to do that. Now maybe McVay's still high on Everett, who knows. But IMO the position is on that need list, where if we can upgrade it would potentially deepen our passing attack options.

The two didn't get very many targets. IMO this style of O is somewhat similar to Martz. It's the RB out of the backfield and the WR's motioning and running routes to create open spaces and mismatches.

I think you could put the 3 best TE's of all time on this roster and none of them would put up big numbers.

Rams FA market reset

The situation certainly seemed to have improved for the better as far as the Rams ability to attract free agents. Suh was the first big name free agent with multiple offers to choose the Rams. He wasn't a bargain. Let's see what happens this off season. I was hoping the Rams could get quality players at reasonable prices to fill out the lacking depth.

Let's see how they handle Sully and Barron as they end their usefulness.

NFL.com ranks Los Angeles Rams’ 2018 NFL Draft class dead last in league

Keep in mind that LB play improved after they used a third to get the short term rental Fowler. Which supports the idea that they really should have put some decent resources into the LB squad from the start.

But yes, I think that better linebacking might have made a difference in the Super Bowl. Cut a drive or two short, and maybe the defense isn't exhausted at the end of the game. Have a thumper in the middle, and maybe they need to pass more, and somebody gets to Brady or a pass gets intercepted at a key time or the Rams just have a short field.

Ebukam might be better next year - don't know if he will ever actually be a good starter though. If the rest of the linebacking group was fine, not a big deal, but again for last season they were counting on some of these kids or longshots producing more than actually happened. And if your plan to address the linebackers is to start taking them at pick 160 and later - you're really planning to fail at that, or counting on an unrealistic hit rate for 2018. I would hope that at least some of the kids and the 2018 draftees would be improved in 2019. I still want a vet in the middle the team can count on.

If they move Littleton to Barron's spot, and put a thumper next to him, he might improve. I don't know if he has a bunch of upward room to improve, but what caught the coaches eyes were in 2017 when he filled in at most practices the second half of the season for Barron, so it stands to reason that he might be better than average at that spot, especially with a hard hitter next to him to allow Littleton to do what he does best.

I'm not trying to rip on the coaches, but while they did a good job building up a lot of the team, they tore down the linebackers and felt they could get decent work out of them without using any significant resources, and predictably that turned out to be wrong.

I don't agree with this.

The coaches showed they were right IMO by getting to the Super Bowl and only allowing 13 points with arguably the worst offensive performance in Super Bowl history, which included almost nothing but 3 and outs by the offense in the first half of the game, thereby putting extreme pressure on the defense - a challenge that they were more than up for.

On top of that, the run defense was good in the playoffs until the Patriots last drive of the game.

Hey Hunters! Serious concern with CWD!!!

I still want to shoot and have a list of guns I'd like to shoot, but with my precarious health situation, even if I could hunt, i'd have to pay to go out west or maybe wait.

Depends on how you want to shoot. Some gun shops have indoor ranges that can handle high power rifles. They will charge a small fee to shoot the rifle with their ammo on their indoor range. If you buy the rifle they will deduct the fee from the purchase price. You could also look into shooting clubs with an outdoor range. They will have membership drives with range time familiarization and instructional shooting.

You can hunt deer in FL too.;)

“I Wore the Juice”- The Dunning-Kruger Effect

this is hilarious
" explains the Dunning-Kruger effect in a much-shared YouTube video: “If you’re very, very stupid, how can you possibly realize that you’re very, very stupid? You’d have to be relatively intelligent to realize how stupid you are....And this explains not just Hollywood but almost the entirety of News.
There, fixed that for ya.

Perspective

Given the fact the Patriots have the same HC and QB and have been running the same scheme for 20 years and the Rams have barely gotten started with theirs, the Rams went toe to toe with them until 7 minutes into the 4th qtr. was pretty damned good. I believe if the Rams had been stouter up front at C, (Sullivan), and RG, (Blythe who is just not big enough) the Rams would have won.
