First Look: Rams wrap up primetime stretch hosting Ravens on MNF

Interesting offense to try and match up with. Because Jackson has evolved as a passer they have a great one two punch going.
Go heavy and stack against their 3 TE or 2 TE 1 FB set and they will pass on you and Jackson will run. Go small and athletic and they will pound Ingram.
Really, the Rams D is playing very well but this a tough match up because it is unique.
The Rams need to score 30 + to win this game realistically and it’s hard to see that.
Should be interesting.
I would start out playing a smaller D....2 DL, 3 LB, 6 DB (3 safeties) and see if it can work.

Hall of Fame Ballot

Larry Walker was one of the most feared hitters of his generation, and won eleven Gold Gloves in right. I don't see why he can't get in.
Walker clearly belongs in the HOF. Lifetime .313 batter, league MVP and over 2000 hits. He provided the extra late season pop in a Cardinals lineup that went on to win 105 games and the LCS. He was also gold that year in the playoffs. From wikipedia-

"In three playoff rounds in 2004, Walker combined to hit .293/.379/.707 with a pair of home runs in each tournament,[5] setting a franchise record for home runs hit by a left-handed batter in one postseason.[112] Walker made his playoff debut with the Cardinals in Game 1 of the NLDS versus the Dodgers, homering twice and scoring four runs in an 8−3 Cardinals win.[113] He became the first Cardinal with a multi-home run game in LDS play. In Game 1 of the National League Championship Series(NLCS) versus the Houston Astros, he was a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

St. Louis advanced to the World Series to face the Boston Red Sox − the first and only of Walker's playing career. In his debut, he collected four hits in five at bats with a home run and two doubles.[114] His four-hit outing tied a Cardinals World Series record, becoming the seventh overall and first to so since Lou Brock in 1967.[17] Boston won the Series by sweeping St. Louis.[5] The Cardinals struggled to hit, batting .190 with a .562 OPS, while Walker batted .357 with a 1.366 OPS. His two home runs accounted for the only two hit by the entire Cardinals team.[115] In the 2004 postseason, Walker scored 21 percent (14 of 68) of Cardinals runs."

Rival right fielder and longtime San Diego Padre Tony Gwynn epitomized Walker as "the most complete player in the National League," and "best baserunner in the game" in a 2002 profile for ESPN. He observed that, in addition to his obvious athletic gifts, Walker approaches the game very cerebrally and is always thinking ahead, unearthing a wide array of advantages that he applied to the game.[53]

Tony Gwynn is a great reference.(y)

Gronk just retired.

Actually, yeah, kinda. More typically, it's a tape measure around the whole muscle group, but yeah, when it comes to certain back muscle groups, yeah, they actually do use calipers or other measuring devices and then structure future workouts to get the body as symmetrical as possible.

One of the things bodybuilders will tell you is that three things go into making a bodybuilding champion: genetics, hard work and supplementation (up to and including HGH, roids, insulin (old days), myostatin blockers, etc)

What genetics does for a bodybuilder is to define what the shape of a muscle will be once it is built up. NO amount of supplementation can change that and hard work can only go so far.

For example, some current bodybuilders have Steinerism or a "chest gap" See this image of Terry Crews
HdTC5iC.jpg

Now look at this pic of Arnold
arnold-chest-master.jpg

Arnold's chest is MASSIVE and yet his entire sternum is covered. Part of that was a different workout regimen. Arnold was a power lifter first and switched to bodybuilding, so he focused on heavy weight for mass and regulated his workouts to include rest. He was very mindful not to overwork the muscles which allowed him to fully augment his musculature while avoiding modern issues like Steinerism, belly bloat and other issues common today. Now, whether it's caused by insulin use, overwork or injury (all things which could deteriorate the medial pectoral nerve), it's an issue. The wrestler, Steiner, apparently also had a serious lung injury which required surgeons to crack his chest open and it looks like he didn't let the nerves get deep enough into the muscle before resuming lifting. Had he waited a year to resume lifting, it might not have been that exaggerated.

Some people naturally have a degree of it just based on where the muscle attaches to the sternum.

Also, look at anyone's face. It's asymmetrical. You can do a simply photoshop test to see this. There are videos on youtube where they show what a person would look like if they were symmetrical and some of the pics are startling.

The body's the same way. Not everyone has the same development on each side. A leg might be longer, an arm, etc which affects how it will respond to working out (torque equals force x perpendicular distance) which is why equally strong people can handle different loads depending on arm length. We see this with long arm OL vs short arm OL who do substantially better on the bench press. Sometimes, guys with a longer arm will have to do extra work on the longer arm to get the muscles to look symmetrical even though technically it means he's on purpose giving himself a strength imbalance.

It is a remarkably rare person who's body is as close to symmetrical as Arnold's is.

And yes, bodybuilders do tons of measurements to ensure symmetry as it's one of the categories for judging and a lack of symmetry is basically a fail, it's worth that much.

Even looking at his back, his development was remarkably similar. The slight differentiation is more a factor of where the light is coming from and the fact that he's facing his head to the right and his right elbow is slightly lower than the left. It's not perfect, but remarkably close. Note the slight lack of symmetry in his abdominal muscles. There's a slight raised offset on the left side.

Sorry, that's a long way to say, yeah, they do all of that and more.

Arnold was just the best cheater in his day, that's why he won.

I wonder how well Gronkowski can play after taking 9 months off. He looks thinner already.

Yeah, he looks like he’s dropped 30 lbs or more. There are receivers bigger than him now.

Oh for sure, at least 30 pounds. Evidently he is off the juice and eating/drinking all natural and has become hyper focused on his health.

Playoffs

The optimist in me says yes.
I believe we can.
If not, reflect and on to next season.

The divisional games are going to count.
The 49ers might, depending how they are looking in weeks to come, rest some players in the final game in readiness for the playoffs.
They might have luxury of being able to drop a game late on.
We don't, therefore, every game is crucial.

I am hoping that the Bears game was a turn around for us.
We have a lot to do and also a part depends on the record of the Seahawks and Vikings amongst others. We can't control that other than beat the Seahawks.

For the most part, we have the players. If the OL can can continue strong from the Bears game then we know what Gurley can do, and hopefully Goff can pick it up as well.
Our defence looks good.

I am sure the resurgence of Gurley backed by a new confidence in the OL must have been huge in the post game locker.

Again, it's an optimstic yes from me.

McVay needs to work the refs better

Now that you mention it, I can’t recall ever seeing McVay *working* the refs.

McVay’s a bookworm who loves to read about sports psychology. You’d think one of those books would’ve given him strategies for getting inside the officials’ heads...

Not that he should go all Harbaugh-insane-clown... but... something...

Brandin Cooks is selling his L.A. home for $5.8M: Nothing or something?

Nice home but where's the garden? Or are they illegal in Cali? I know collecting rain water is. lol

Huh? That’s not true... It’s the opposite, Californians are encouraged to collect rain water so they can reduce their water consumption by 20% by next year. They even say during a drought you can still collect 30-60% of your water needs.

River Mock 2.0 ...

Like it or not, we made Cooks our WR1 when we traded for him. He doesn't have size but he does stretch the field for us. But now he's teetering on the edge of retirement. Without a 1st round pick, it will be very hard to replace him without finding a late round gem. Which can be done btw.
We need to keep one of Fowler, Littleton or Brockers to avoid using our <late> 2nd rounder on a DE. Okoronkwo is doing great as an OLB, so maybe Fowler can be expendable. Brockers does so much but maybe he can be as well, as we seem to like JFM, JSB, etc. But hitting on a LB like Littleton is rare, we need to extend him as soon as practicable. So I may be on board with DE in the 2nd, but what WR options can be had there? and if we let Littleton walk (a "Fletcher 2.0" mistake IMO) what LB options are there?
It's possible our OL picks of the last 2 drafts will work out, but Scherff alone would be a huge upgrade. We've upgraded at S, CB, OLB, RB, TE, and most other positions I can think of. So I'm starting to think WR1 would be the best option, but with a late 2nd pick, we may not have good options there if the WR pool isn't deep.

Thank you for your comments.

Of the 3 you mention, Littleton would be the guy I keep if it's financially feasible. Brockers isn't a 5T DE, he really belongs with a 4 - 3 Base Defense, we need someone who can exert more pressure on QB's and take on double teams so Donald can be even more effective than he already is. Fowler is expendable because we have a great deal of depth at the position and some team will overpay.

While it may seem a stretch to replace Cooks with the untested Webster at this time, he's a speedster and showed very good hands during the pre-season, I'm hoping he'll get an opportunity to start in place of Thomas soon, Thomas is likely gone following this season anyway. With all this, we may be premature in contemplating the end of Cooks career as we just don't know how this will all play out yet.

It's early yet in the experiment, but our rookie offensive linemen have passed their first major test in a starting role, so this may relieve some of the pressure from hitting an expensive free agency home run for a run at Brandon Scherff. We'll still need to add an OT and C/OG during the draft for increased competition, but following the Chicago game i'm leaning more towards retaining Whitworth for one more season. The difference in cost between Scherff & Whitworth could make re-signing Littleton possible, it will also give Noteboom extra time to recover,
strengthen and learn.

My next mock will reflect on the above, but probably won't be drastically altered. jmo.

With all the media negativity...

Please accept my apology for saying you sound like a 9er fan. I realize that is the worst insult you can throw at another person. I've been a bit too sensitive lately. That damn game gave me high blood pressure last night.

Good response too. Bad = not a playoff team. Semantics I can live with. Good teams make the playoffs. Bad teams don't.

To me though, I'd say "bad" is what the Rams were when they didn't get over .500 football once during the first 8 years of my son lifetime. Before I could get him addicted to our "horns" he jumped on the Cam Newton bad wagon the year they went to the superbowl. Now he thinks he is a Panthers fan. I've failed as a father.

I digress.... as far as expectations go: One step at a time I guess.. Hoping they knock off the Ravens at home next Monday Night.

No problem at all.......I kinda knew where it was coming from. You and I express of anxiety differently. :)

I should define it even more......

Pre McVay - Bad team = 500 or less
Post McVay - Bad Team = playoffs or not

Panthers....mine is a Broncos fan......................couldn't even help us with Minnesota!!!! :-)

Does anyone on this forum think the Rams will score more than 20

As soon as McVay learns to employ ALL of his weapons...YES.

1. You can't have 2 exceptionally talented TEs and never throw to them.

2. You can't have Gurley, Brown, and Henderson and not get them out on LBs.

3. Lastly, you gotta learn to take what the defense is giving...this ain't last year...teams copy each other and they saw how the Bears and the Pat's stopped the Ram offense.

So to McVay...as they say in chess..."IT'S YOUR MOVE"...

Bears-Rams Was a Complete Disaster

This garbage article doesn't even deserve our time.

It's very sad to see how low "sports journalism" has fallen. Everybody is an "expert" nowadays. What a joke.

This is the kind of lame - The Sky Is Falling mentality that ROD was created to get away from.

I realize that @BonifayRam (the OP) didn't write this, and we always appreciate everyone posting content for us here... but this is the kind of shit that we don't need to waste our time with on ROD. Other sites can choose to dwell on the negative and rant all over the franchise from top to bottom. ROD was created as a safe haven to get away from that kind of ridiculousness.

We are going to be making a conscious effort here to get back to ROD's roots. If you don't know what those are, please take a minute or two to familiarize yourself with our Terms and Conditions... it should spell everything out well.

We have Vent Threads so that everyone can get their frustrations out after a loss... but this site isn't here to get together for 24/7 bitching and moaning. There are plenty of sites across the net that dwell in that sewer... the guy who wrote the trash piece in the OP belongs in those kind of places... not here on ROD.

If any of you are turned off by my comments here... please PM me and I will be happy to discuss your concerns.

Thanks
This. SO MUCH THIS.
