NFL: Concussions up slightly in 2019

The NFL announced Thursday that the number of reported concussions during the 2019 season rose slightly from the previous campaign, per ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

There were 224 reported concussions in the 2019 preseason and regular season combined, compared to 214 in 2018. Both numbers are well down from 2017, when 281 concussions were reported, prompting the league to implement new safety rules.

Despite the slight increase in 2019, the numbers from the last two years will form a "new benchmark" for the future, according to Jeff Miller, the league's VP of health and safety initiatives.

"From here on, we are going to be driving our concussion reduction efforts against that new benchmark," Miller said. "Last year's number was a substantial drop. This year's number is statistically similar to it. We feel as if we've found a new place from where we need to continue to push down the number of concussions."

After averaging 266.3 concussions per season from 2015-17, the NFL reworked kickoff rules and made it illegal for players to lower their heads to initiate contact with opponents.

Will Patrick Mahomes get $40M/yr?

I saw a Reddit thread recently from when Woods got signed by the Rams and almost every single person was saying the Rams paid too much and he wasn’t worth it. Two years later and he has one of the best contracts for his value.

Doesn’t take long for things to change. The media just hates Goff, could you imagine if he put up 77 yards in the NFCCG? They would have torn him to shreds. Almost every other QB gets credit where he doesn’t, so take criticism of him with a huge grain of salt.

I really like Goff. He was the guy I wanted in the draft.

Does he have his short comings? Yes. I feel one thing about him is that he'll consistently work to get better.

We'll never see Goff running the way some of these other QBs do but I feel whole heartedly that he can match those QBs with his own capabilities.

Goff has the qualities to be an excellent leader. Playing with other men.

Goff, Mcvay, and the rest of this organization will continue to keep their minds set on ascending

Tampa RV Supershow

I’m very clear that as a hobby it’s as involved and expensive as having a boat. I wouldn’t do that.

How’s the saying go? If it flies, floats or freaks...rent it.

Nah, this would be a total lifestyle change. Wife and I are really wrapping our heads around having less and making due with less.

That’s good info about the fifth wheel. We already figured out that the only way the fifth wheel makes any sense is if the kids are flung all over and we use it as a mobile base of operations. Otherwise, the Class A is the way to go. Also, it’s better to get a lightly used premier coach like a Newell, Newmar or Foretravel as opposed to a new Winnebago as the quality is next level and the depreciation is far more than any degradation.

It’s gonna be a fun journey if we can make it happen...I think.

Wes Phillips - TE Coach

I would like to see mcvay try Everett at full back. after all when drafted they said he ran like a running back after catch. also if he is having trouble with inline blocking give him a running start and at 6 ft 3 and 240lbs he maybe dominating. it seamed like with mundt and Higbee in 12 personal they ran it a lot better add Everett from full back might be awesome.
The key with FB is the will to do it. Everett's a big and physical dude but asking him to function as a primary move blocker would probably get poor returns IMO. I mean I don't know what he's thinking, but in general guys who are beast type passing game weapons their whole lives don't like to settle in as a mashing/fullback type role.

I guess a better way to say it is some guys are just wired for that FB type role, and even then some guys can't take the beating physically. So IMO what we need from Everett, or the best way to utilize him, is with the ball in his hands in space.

And btw I still feel like he's got more value to us as a potential weapon than whatever we'd get for him in trade. IMO he doesn't have the kind of value that would make it worthwhile to move him unless they feel like he's a distraction in the locker room.

Taylor Rapp Lunar New Years Feast

Cool video... thanks for posting!

I had to laugh towards the end because they used the same slang as my 21 year old twins. The "low key" phrase must be required to communicate at FSU these days... it's used constantly to an almost annoying level. These guys in the video were slinging that out at the end. "Fire" is the other one and they threw that out too.

Love hearing the culture stuff that was shared. Glad to see Rapp ultimately embraced his after not doing so early on in his life. I went through the exact same thing... embracing your differences is so empowering. Many never break through that wall.

If Dee Ford lines up right...

unbelievably stupid play from him. i don't understand how a player does this with the game on the line.

how many times have the cheats been gifted games after they just lost them? i don't think i've ever seen anything like it.

and both times the rams lost to them in the superbowl they shouldn't have even made it to the game. it's fucking sickening and that the rams offense played so poorly in both games.

What to do with Ryan Tannehill?

I liked Tannehill coming out of college but I felt he was over-Drafted at #8. He should have been taken around #20. That said I posted at the time he was a Week 1 rookie starter who would play with a high floor and a low ceiling. I didn't think he would improve significantly over time. He has strengths and limitations. He's a QB you can win a Super Bowl with if you have the right OC and playing personnel. In the wrong system he's a 1-15 QB. He's always been just the right side of the Andy Dalton line.

He's an $18M QB for the right team, and the Titans are definitely the right team. He would be foolish to look elsewhere and they would be foolish to sign another vet, (other than Brady), if his contract demands are reasonable. That said whoever signs him will still be looking for a better rookie prospect in the very near future.

I wish him well, but i'm glad he's not our starting QB. He's a top 22 QB, (but only just), and his ceiling is about 14.

The Fermi Paradox and Alien Spaceships on Earth.

They're not living, it's not like a thought or anything, it's just how they act in order to become stable. Atoms and particles "want" to become stable as well, and while it's not some sort of awareness, it is almost like a programming because it's rather consistent in how they want to bond. I was overly simplifying it a little because it's rather complex and I'm not a chemist nor an evolutionary biologist, and for simplicity's sake given this is an internet board. The particles that make up our atoms aren't any different from other particles, but as they bond together for their stability, and form more complex things like atoms and molecules, eventually if the conditions are right, it can grow into a more complex form that can react more to its surroundings, such as moving closer to the surface of the water to catch more sunlight, which gives it more energy and thus the cycle escalates.

I know it's not an uber satisfying answer, but we simply just don't know every little detail yet, still plenty of research going in.

We make new discoveries that can potentially change our understanding of science all the time, even now we're finding discoveries that don't mesh with our Lambda-CDM model and the Hubble Constant isn't so constant after all. I'm also not all that worried about some asteroid hitting Earth, that's among the least of my concerns, there are far worse objects out there, and far more pressing issues down here that we should be concerned about before asteroids. We're not advancing nearly as fast as we could be, especially with so little funding and attention be given to the topic.

As for everything else, I'm not looking to get roped into any religious or church vs science debate so I'm just going to take my exit from the ring here.
Thanks for that. At the end of what I wrote I figured I just took you too literally and you were using general teams. Thanks for following up though. You're a smart dude and I appreciate your insight (particularly in subjects I know nothing about, like this).
