Drafting a RB a Top Need now?

J.Kelly can be highly productive in this system. I think we'll see it this season.

I don't know if Tevin Coleman wants to continue to be a backup, but I'd go after him hard in FA and tell him he will split time with Gurley.

I want to see what Kelly can do. He has quick early moves when he puts that foot in ground he explodes. I think he can be the 2 in a 1-2 punch running attack. Coleman might just cost too much. Lots of reports that the Eagles are eyeing him and others. Could be time for Rams to find a gem latter in the draft.

Devon Bush Jr.

As much as I love Bush, I'm hopeful that the Rams believe in Kiser and were just giving him a year to learn. That would eliminate a high draft pick need. That is also assuming they get CL locked up with an extension. We have so many needs, that eliminating one would be great. Outside of that, I'd be perfectly happy with Bush at 31, though I think he likely goes before that anyways.

Will Sullivan be back

Letting Sully go was inevitable. He really
started to regress, see the Chicago and Philly games.

I don’t think Brian Allen is ready or the answer at center.

Move Blythe to center and Noteboom to guard. Draft a Guard as a backup to groom for when Noteboom takes over at LT.

Sign Saffold AsAP. The Sully savings should be used on Saffold.

Mad Appreciation for a classy guy in Sullivan who really solidified things for us for nearly 2 years up front, until father time started to hit!

Two things:

One, McVay has said that he thinks Allen IS ready and the answer at center.

Two, everyday that Saffold isn't re-signed (prior to FA), the odds that he will be a Ram next year plummet.

Whitworth-Noteboom-Allen-Blythe-Havenstein is the most likely starting OL. IMO depth will come from signing Groy and drafting at least one or two, just like we did last year.

I think had Whitworth retired, we would have used those cap savings to re-sign Saffold, but that we were never going to have both back.

Rams to let Suh test FA Market

I thought Suh did excellently in the playoffs, but was marginal in the regular season. You can't blame him or the rest of the D for our Super bowl loss....so I am still for bringing him back..
Nothing wrong with Suh in for 60% of snaps and youngster in for 40%. Keep Suh fresh at end of games/end of year and let youngster ease into starting role in 1-2 years. Question is does Suh go to highest bidder or another chance with a Super Bowl level team.

Andrew Whitworth to return for 2019

“You know what? We got a starting left tackle. Next year, that’s a big bonus — you got one of our pillars in the locker room back — that’s an even bigger bonus,” Snead continued. “He’ll still be able to help develop some of our young offensive linemen that we drafted last year and we’ll draft this year to take over the reins when he does decide to move on.”

10 draft targets for Rams who stood out at NFL combine

Florida State EDGE Brian Burns
Burns came away as one of the biggest winners at any position, elevating his stock immensely at the combine. He came in bulked up with about 15 added pounds, while maintaining the speed and explosiveness that made him dangerous at Florida State.

It’s possible he’s pushed himself out of the Rams’ range at 31, but if he were to fall the way Harold Landry did, Los Angeles would have a hard time passing him up.

Another one that showed well and looks like he will be gone before #31.

Virginia S Juan Thornhill
Thornhill can play either safety spot at the next level, and after seeing him test at the combine, there’s no doubt he has the speed and athleticism to play the deep middle. He jumped out of the gym with 44 inches in the vertical jump and 11-9 in the broad, while also clocking a tremendous 4.42 in the 40-yard dash.

He’ll be an option in the first round like Gardner-Johnson, assuming the Rams move on from Joyner.

OKAY. @Juan_Thornhill just jumped 44" in the vertical!

Saw him projected to the Rams in round 3. I guess not with those numbers.

Jrry32's First March Mock Draft

Haven't started any draft work yet so nothing to add there. I do like the Bortles idea.

I believe a #2 QB needs to be either a veteran who's actually fired his rifle in battle
OR
a scrambling/running QB who causes fits for a defense who hasn't gameplanned the off schedule stuff.

Bortles fits the former. Mannion is neither.

I like the Bortles idea also. McVay can get him coached up and maybe get him back on track.

NFL draft and forums

It is that time of year where NFL news merges with the draft.

So, consistent with before, draft and combine news is acceptable in the main forums. It’s the workhorse news right now, anyway.

We’ll keep the mock drafts in the draft forums.

Bottom line; it’s a slower time of year, share anything NFL here to maximize visibility and discussion.

Cheers!

NFL Combine: 10 stars who overcame worst performances

The NFL Combine is far from being the be-all, end-all of a draft prospect’s value as an NFL player.

Here are 10 cases in point of current or recent stars who whiffed at their workout, only to emerge as some of the league’s best.

  • Tom Brady, QB, 2000

At the Combine, Brady looked far from a future six-time Super Bowl winning QB, which led to him being a sixth-round pick (No. 199 overall). He was historically un-athletic with his miserable 5.28-second 40-yard dash. His 6-5 frame also didn’t look great, weighing just 211 pounds. Of course, his intangibles, intelligence and competitiveness have made up for his physical shortcomings.
  • Anquan Boldin, WR, 2001

Through his years with the Cardinals, Ravens, 49ers and Lions, Boldin was a matchup problem because of his toughness and quickness. But at the Combine, he ran a bad 4.72 40-yard dash for his position, along with a 7.35 in the 3-cone drill. It caused the converted Florida State QB to fall to the second round, No. 54 overall to Arizona. He exploded for 10 catches, 217 yards and 2 TDs in his first NFL game, and he ended his 14-year career as a three-time Pro Bowler.
  • Drew Brees, QB, 2001

Brees started off his Combine by measuring shorter than he was listed at Purdue, not even 6-0. He combined that with struggles in making accurate passes and throwing some dreaded ducks on downfield throws. He settled for being the Chargers’ first pick of the second round, and he has gone on to be one of the game’s most prolific passers in New Orleans.
  • Antonio Brown, Steelers, 2010

It’s hard to believe Brown's speed, quickness and athleticism numbers failed to impress at the Combine, but along with his 4.56-second 40, he had only a 33.5-inch vertical and a 6.98-second 3-cone. His 8-foot, 9-inch broad jump was worst among wide receivers who tested that year. Now the sixth-round pick is running, jumping and blowing past everybody in the NFL.
  • Arian Foster, RB, 2009

Foster’s miserable 40-yard dash time of 4.68 seconds sealed his fate to go undrafted, as there already were some ball-security concerns with him coming out of Tennessee. Houston signed him because of his potential to thrive in its zone-blocking scheme, and he rewarded the team with four Pro Bowl seasons
  • Kam Chancellor, S, 2010

Chancellor measured at 6-3, 231 pounds and delivered a solid bench press with 22 reps. The problem was he did little to shake the notion that he was caught in between safety and maybe needing to transition to linebacker out of Virginia Tech with a slow 40 time (4.62). Seattle took the four-time Pro Bowler in the fifth round and accepted him as a hard-hitting hybrid.
  • Alfred Morris, RB, 2012

Coming out of Florida Atlantic, there were concerns about whether Morris was too heavy and too slow to be more of a feature back than a just a fullback. He struggled to dispel the speed questions with a 4.6 40-yard dash at the Combine. His quickness, however, remained underrated out of his workouts. Washington stole him in the sixth round, No. 173 overall, getting a two-time Pro Bowl durable workhorse before he moved on to be a backup for rival Dallas (and eventually San Francisco).
  • Calais Campbell, DE, 2008

Before he became one of the NFL's best havoc-wreaking ends, Campbell had to fight through a less than desirable Combine workout coming out of Miami. Tabbed early as a surefire first-round pick, at 6-8, 290 pounds, he struggled with both his strength (16 bench-press reps) and agility (5.04 in the 40, 7.45 in 3-cone). It allowed Arizona to nab the edge intimidator in the second round, No. 50 overall.
  • Joe Haden, CB, 2010

When Haden was coming out of Florida, there were concerns about his size hampering his ability to be a shutdown corner. Then speed became an issue at the Combine with a 4.57 40 and a 35-inch vertical leap, not in line with the good numbers at the hops-tailored position. Cleveland looked past that in the draft, and he has been a well-compensated cover man (now with Pittsburgh) for nine NFL seasons.
  • Terrell Suggs, OLB, 2003

We know Suggs as a strong, explosive, intimidating pass-rusher now, but coming out of Arizona State, he had a terrible Combine. Not only was he slow (4.8-second 40), but he also disappointed by doing a subpar 19 bench-press reps. It’s good Baltimore looked past all of that to take him at No. 10 overall, because it hasn’t been disappointing since.

Rams new Uni - when?

Unfortunately, the way things worked out, I don’t know how many new fans came on board after the SB, Just the opposite in many cases judging by social media. There is still some sentiment that the Rams didn’t belong and got what they deserved.
I expect the team will still be competitive by the time the new stadium opens and that, along with the most elaborate stadium in the country will boost sales of Rams gear.
How can the Chargers not get crushed in all the hoopla though? I’m sure the Rams will be part of the opening week double header or MNF and the new unis. The horns will be all over and oh yeah the Chargers are here too.

“Judging by social media...”

Your first mistake.

Trade Tsunami 2.0? NFL ripe for more wheeling and dealing

I see a bunch of Justin Houston articles this morning & about a trade between KC & LA but Houston's contract is way out of bounds for the Rams IMO with over $40 million due to Houston for the 2019/2020 seasons.

From reports last season the Rams Org. were really as interested in ER Jerry Hughes much more than ER Dante Fowler Jr. I believe that the 6-2 253 pounds Hughes would love to return to a Wade 34 D over Bills 43 D. Hughes still may be in some discussion yet for LA with little over $10 mil he is due in 2019.

I remain a very big fan of Brockers. He is listed as the Rams starting DE @ the 5 tech post but by the end of the regular season & into the 3 last gms of 2019 Brockers was primarily our NT. His play @ this position permitted Donald & Suh to make their big impacts in those big games. Early the 2018 season Wade was forced to moved DT Dom Easley & DL'er Morgan Fox out from the DL unit. Other youngsters DT Tanzel Smart & NT Sebastian Joseph-Day saw little to nothing of regular game action. Even 4th yr back up NT Ethan Westbrooks snaps greatly diminished. Leaving only one rookie John Franklin-Myers with most of the relief snaps.

Leaving the main 3 DL'ers (Brockers/Suh/Donald) on the field for a ton of snaps. The rotations of years past in order to keep this very big men fresh was not in operation last season. Wonder if that had something to do with DL coach being replaced?

Now with the four DL'ers in free agency (Suh/ Easley/ Westbrooks/ Fox) There are rumor articles on Brockers & comments here @ ROD thinking it would be a good time to unload Brockers to retain some $10.25 million to utilize elsewhere. IMO that's not a smart move.

I too disagree with all of the trade Brockers talk. Getting a good DT in the draft isn't a guarantee. If they lose Suh and trade Brockers, then there would be a big big hole at Dline.

I felt Hughes was the better trade option. I was hoping that he would be a Ram by the deadline.
