TNF: Steelers at Browns

And I explained why I disagree. We shouldn't be charging people to make a statement. We should be charging people because they committed a crime and we believe we can convict them. Charging somebody whom we can't convict to send a message is an abuse of the criminal justice system.

I agree. Again. I didn’t use the language of “sending a message”. Maybe you are responding to another post.

As egregious and stupid as it was, on reflection, I may agree with you about charging him. Mostly because of the precedent it would set.

Todd Gurley workload

Who's to blame for Todd Gurley's terrible season as a receiver?

BY Cameron DaSilva
A lot has gone wrong with the Los Angeles Rams this season, but there may be no bigger storyline than Todd Gurley’s precipitous fall from being one of the most productive running backs in the NFL to one who ranks 72nd in the NFL in yards from scrimmage. For a player who had 671 more yards than any other player the last two years, that’s a startling development.

Where Gurley has really fallen off is as a receiver. He’s only caught 15 passes on 28 targets for 81 yards and one touchdown in eight games, essentially being phased out as a pass catcher in the Rams’ pass-heavy offense. Here’s where Gurley ranked among all running backs with at least 30 targets from 2017-18.

  • Targets: 4th (168)
  • Receptions: 5th (123)
  • Receiving yards: 3rd (1,368)
  • TD catches: 2nd (10)
  • Yards per target: 2nd (8.14)

Needless to say, he was extremely productive as a receiver out of the backfield in Sean McVay’s offense – and it’s a big reason the Rams made it as far as they did the last two seasons. Gurley’s numbers as a pass-catcher are alarmingly bad and trending toward some of the worst in recent memory for a running back.

To put it into perspective historically, he’s the only running back since 2009 with a catch rate below 60% and an average of fewer than 6 yards per reception (on at least 28 targets). Only 11 other players since 1992 have matched those numbers, which shows how ineffective he’s been this season. Furthermore, his 2.89 yards per target are the lowest by a running back with at least 28 targets since Ben Tate in 2013.

There’s simply no denying the fact that Gurley has really struggled in the passing game this year. The biggest question is why – and who’s to blame?

Todd Gurley

Some of it certainly falls on Gurley. He’s dropped five of the 28 passes that have come his way, which is a drop rate of 17.9%. That’s the third-highest rate among all players with at least 15 receptions this season. Last year, Gurley only dropped seven passes on 81 targets, a rate of 8.6%. Outside of his touchdown catch against the Falcons, Gurley’s hands have not been very good this season.

This is a bad throw by Goff on a play that had little chance to turn into anything, but it’s a ball Gurley typically catches.

Jared Goff

His suddenly unreliable hands aren’t the only reason his receiving numbers are as bad as they are. Jared Goff’s accuracy – or lack thereof – absolutely warrants some criticism and blame, too. The passes he’s thrown Gurley’s way have done nothing to help the running back, rarely hitting him in the numbers.

Ranking of our issues this year.

It all starts with the o-line. Then carries over to Goff. Which in turns leads to McVay. The line is the biggest problem. But Goff ain't doing himself any favors with the turnovers. Accuracy isn't what it was last year either.

And McVay isn't patient enough with the run game. Gurley gets no 4th quarter touches in a one score game. The run/pass ratio is not very balanced. Trying to win a hard fought defensive battle by running and playing the field position game is not in in McVay's DNA. That is why its hard to beat these low scoring defensive teams.

Coach McVay Discussion

Not picking on you specifically friend, just looking for a quote that sums up a lot of what others have said here and in other threads.

That said, do people honestly think that McVay wouldnt utilise Gurley the way he did in the first part of his tenure if Gurley could handle that?

Gurley's done as a workhorse back. It's blindingly obvious. He has extremely limited trade value because everyone can see he's not what he was, and on top of that he has a massive contract. We aren't playing Madden here.

My view is this - naivety/poor planning with the make-up of this years O-line is the single biggest issue, and McVay shares that responsibility with Les and other decision makers within the organisation.

There is other context that explains some of this too. 5-4 in any other division looks a good record, and nobody saw the 9ers coming. We have never had tremendous depth but we have been very lucky with injuries this past 2 years since McVay has come and it's not that way this season.

There are 31 other teams trying to win too guys, sheesh. And it's so recent that we were so bad, we would have all bitten our hands off for a 5-4 record 5 years ago. I guess I expected more patience from our fanbase than this.

Rant over.
Fair comments. The problem is 'everyone' on this board, myself included, thought we were a top 8 team going into the year, and for a top 8 team the minimum expectation is to reach the divisional round. A Wild-card defeat would have meant failure as a season. Well..we're not looking so hot now and in the back of everyone's mind is that nagging fear that we've gone from 2000 to 2004 in the space of 8 weeks. The angst is understandable.

OL Free Agent List... Time to go shopping

Yep. His performance against the Rams last time around can be attributed more to him running around and making plays after the pressure came than anything else. A less mobile QB would have been sacked numerous times in that game.
I've only seen two quarterbacks in my career as an NFL viewer that looked better when they're out of the pocket.

Fran Tarkenton and Brett Favre.
So Russell Wilson makes three now and I've been watching the NFL since 1968.

Offensive Line Injuries

The 3 B"s weren't on the team , and Conner was out . I even waited till Wednesday evening to buy my tickets , once I saw a great weather forecast . 60 degrees and a putrid Steelers offense were a perfect scenario for an easy win . That's why I don't bet anymore . If it seems to good to be true ,don't touch it .
You made the worst mistake in betting. Discounting the refs.

All 50/50 judgement calls were for Steelers and that was 14 critical points. Vegas always wins baby.

Some random thoughts after settling down after the Steeler game...

It is almost unforgivable that this FO and these coaches made such a miscalculation that put this team in this position.

I wouldn't say that at all. They took a risk, and it came back and bit them. Every Front office takes risks. Sometimes you get away with them sometimes you don't. There isn't enough money in the CAP to pay superstars everywhere. You have to skimp somewhere, if you have superstars. They just lost on their gamble. It happens.

Nobody in any walk of life guesses right every time. That is kind of an unrealistic expectation. Yea it sucks, but you hope that in the long run they guess right more often than they guess wrong. So far, this regime has guessed right for the most part.

Jalen Ramsey deal (after a couple games).

Yeah - so we messed up twice, and I was half kidding. Past is no indicator of the future. I agree.

Main point was what I'M tired of hearing - how we gave up SOOO much in 1st round draft picks. It just isn't true.

The Fish screwed up lol. The only part of the 1st rounders that bothers me especially with this team now is you control that talent for 5 years. We had some good drafts and are approaching end of deals for guys like Kupp, Woods, Brockers, Littleton, etc.

there is a high probability no matter who they picked they would not be as good as Ramsey. But if signing Ramsey means losing Kupp, Woods, Brockers and not having draft capital to replace that talent or a chance at replacing that talent, that concerns me. Not having a 1st rounder is 5 years will catch up to us sooner or later. I hope Snead pulls off some miracle and makes me eat crow but that will be a huge task.

We need a #1 big receiver

I have seen that stats but most of those teams were the Pats or played the pats .
I like our guys , but they and other smaller recievers struggle against press man , and that's what alot of good teams run now

That was kind of my point. Teams that played the Pats still made the Super Bowl. I dont disagree with you please dont get me wrong. If you have Hopkins, Jones, or AB on a rookie deal that is great. I think it has proven you dont need those guys to win or make a SB....shoot we made the SB just last year with the same crew minus Kupp.

Star Wars films: Rank em

1. Greatest:
Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars
Return of the Jedi

2. A fitting add on to the original trilogy:
Rogue One

3. Good films, enjoyable:
Force Awakens
Solo

4. Had its moments:
Revenge of the Sith

5. Poor:
Attack of the Clones
Phantom Menace

6: dreadful:
Last Jedi

It really is about the original trilogy for me.
So much of my childhood in those three films.
A massive sense of nostalgia whenever I watch them.

The other Star Wars films, no matter good or bad, don't hit home and are just movies to me.

NFL refs need to crack a physics book

The Steelers scored 17 points. The fact is that 14 of the 17 points came only due to blown calls. That was not a fumble. And Washington's knee hit before the toe.

But even if we say the Washington play was too close to call, they should have never been in that position to start. Rudolph threw an interception. It was a dead fucking duck after he got hit. The refs flagged Ramsey for pass interference 15 yards away from where the ball was caught. A ball has to be catchable for that WR to be DPI. Johnson was nowhere near the ball and running in the wrong direction.

It was clear that the refs were intentionally calling a lopsided game. Nothing made that more clear than Reynolds getting the most blatant pass interference of the night on 4th down without the refs calling it. They called ticky tack bullshit multiple times on Ramsey, and then they let that shit go because "it's 4th down." Fuck the NFL. Fuck this bullshit. If there's anything that will drive me to quit watching this sport, it's the officiating.

I was yelling at my tv like everyone else, but I’m a biased ram fan. It was very close but in this case you can go frame by frame because you can see the knee and the toe at the same time. Well that didn’t really happen it was slowed way down but I thought there should’ve been a shot that showed the knee down and the toe not or vice versa. I may be a crazy ram fan but if it’s staring me in the face I’ll accept it, like the Rudolf incomplete pass. He started his forward motion and changed his mind, incomplete.

I’m surprised there wasn’t more talk about the Goff fumble, that’s another one I thought was pretty clear. The arm was going forward, the ball went forward, incomplete.
I asked my buddy, who’s a steeler fan, what the difference between the Reynolds non interference and the other flags that had been thrown for pi and he had no answer. That being said Reynolds has to make sure a flag gets thrown there, the db has no idea where the ball is, he needs to play through the db or try to high point the ball. Of course all this stuff is easy in hindsight but isn’t this supposed to be Reynolds niche? Tall guy, large catch radius, he’s been in this position several times without success.
There are plenty of other needs on this team right now but do we need to start looking at receiver? Who knows what Cooks long term situation is and there doesn’t seem to be a good option in these short yardage situations.
