(Poll) You're the Seahawks GM

Time to clean house in Seattle. FO, coaches, players.

Realistically they should trade Wilson while they can get top dollar for him. I think they feel they have their new HC in Waldron but a new GM is needed to improve their drafts. If the Hawks want to stay with an LA connection, they might look long and hard at James Gladstone, who has worked hand in hand with Les Snead in his drafts since 2016 and is his assistant GM. If offered a position as a GM with Seattle there is no realistic way for Snead to block him from accepting.

James has watched Snead for the past 5 years in every move that Les has made. He's the one guy I hope LA never loses to a division competitor. He's been involved in all the player evaluation processes in all Les Sneads drafts and moves. DeCosta in Baltimore is a guy that Ozzie Newsome hand groomed as his successor. It's what has kept Baltimore as a top team in the NFL.

At some point I see Gladstone getting his shot. I just hope it's outside the NFCW or even the NFC completely. There are huge issues with the Raider FO and with Mayock as GM. If Gruden and Mayock get booted next year then Davis will be looking for a new HC and GM. He knows Snead and the Rams organization. It would not be far fetched to see the Raiders poach Goldstone and Waldron both to try to replicate their own Snead/McVay combination.

TNF - Rams at Seahawks

This is an example of how the OL has changed under Carberry when I say they are running a gap power blocking scheme without a lead FB. Kupp is providing the same lead block as a FB would. IMO this just adds more wear and tear to his most important WR threat. But my point is that it's well-executed and was never played under Kromer. It's what I had been advocating during Kromer's tenure.

The Rams are behind the curve in their ground game compared to most teams. But IMO that is because of the emphasis of the offense under Stafford is the passing game. McVay uses his ground game as a distraction, which is different from when he had Gurley. This doesn't mean that they need another bell cow RB, it just points out how McVay's offense is structured.

This OL is playing lights out this season in their pass blocking. Nothing more reflects how well the OL is playing as when McVay goes to empty in the backfield. Defenses are getting only one sack per game and when put into context Stafford has attempted 172 passes and has been sacked 3 times (1.7%). That plays to the strength of McVay's offense. His offense changed after Gurley's injury. Playing 21 personnel is a bandaid. If he is serious about the run game he needs to incorporate a true FB to run a true power attack.

They have Buddy Howell on the PS. At 6'1", 225 lbs running a 4.52 in the 40 he's a match for any ILB if he's coached up as a FB. He's got good speed for a man his size and has shown decent hands as a receiver. all things you look for in your FB metrics. IMO adding Howell as a FB in a 21 personnel set, would do more than to continue to use Kupp as a lead blocker or a second TE. But that would signal a return to the possession-oriented offense. But in reality with Kupp and Jefferson as his outside receivers, he would still have that deep option, especially running them on deep routes if they play a one-deep alignment.

On pass plays it would give McVay, 4 receivers with Jefferson and Kupp deep, Higbee medium, and Howell short with their very good pass blocking Michel held in if needed. All they would need is to coach up Howell as a FB. As long as McVay stays with his 11 personnel alignment as his primary set it will limit what they can do in the run game. His 12 personnel is a dead giveaway he's going to run. 21 personnel gives them a stronger run attack but doesn't weaken Stafford's pass options. It will force defenses into their base set and with LA's receivers, that's advantage Rams.

With Michel, Henderson, and Funk as the primary RBs, then adding a FB makes sense. If a DC sees 21 personnel he will stay in his base set. But if McVay shifts one of those 3 RBs into the slot suddenly the defense is outmatched if it's Henderson or Funk. Both can outrun the vast majority of LBs and I don't see any DC dropping his safeties into the box with Kupp and Woods outside. IMO it's time for the next evolution of McVay's offense. Considering how well Sony pass protects, McVay could use him as a lead blocker or extra pass protector with Henderson running pass routes. There is a lot more McVay can do with the offensive players he has.

People have been saying this team will only go as far as the OL allows. Well the OL has arrived and is playing at an elite level in their pass protection. This is why IMO this is a legit SB combination of QB and OL. Morris simply needs to learn from this Seattle game that he's got elite talent on this defense when used properly. They dominated Seattle until he backed off when Wilson went out. That made no sense.

Fantasy Question

If anybody cares to answer, just looking for thoughts.

Have a tentative offer of Aaron Rodgers for Trey Lance (I get Rodgers) from his owner who is 0-4 and about giving up on the year. Wants Lance's keeper upside, as do I to some degree at least.

Issue is I have Herbert at QB1 and am happy with him. Team is 2-2 but I haven't been bad, just haven't been great.

Trying to figure out if adding Rodgers gives enough 'great' each week to add some wins and change my season. Thoughts...?
Trade Lance for another position of need (WR/RB).

Staley and the Run Game

Re: Burgess I just don't know man. It's year two for him and he couldn't beat out Rapp, who has struggled so far. So how bad is Burgess if he couldn't beat him out. And to what extent is it Morris and the calls/prep. I honestly don't know but if they're at least changing out the guys who aren't performing that's a start eh?

Alternate question: Is it really that he can't beat out Rapp, or does Morris just favor Rapp over him for some unknown reason? As I noted, Burgess did play well and showed promise in his limited time last year. And he's playing STs this year, which suggests its not a lingering issue from last year's injury. Rapp has just never been that good as a deep safety in coverage, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that there is not someone else on the roster better suited for the role they are trying to make him play at the present.

Found Some Old Ram Stuff In The Attic

Yep.

A friend of mine wanted me to go with him to that SB. He had an extra ticket... but he was a cheater fan. I was going to go with him. I even agreed to go, but once I started thinking about having to deal with him (win or lose) after the game and on the flight back... I backed out and did not go.

He bought me a SB hat from the game when he was out there. It didn't have either team on it... just the SB and Roman Numeral logo thing on the front. It did say New Orleans on the back hat adjustment thing. It was in the box with the rest of this stuff. It was in great shape too because it had never been worn. The wife thought I should keep it... I told her to throw it in the trash. LOL
C'mon man, embrace Max Q!

I wish we had another elite running back like Gurley

Steven Jackson would've been great for McVay's system, especially prime S-Jax, who not only was a physical and fast runner, but an excellent receiver and pass-protector as well.

Alas, he happened to play for fucking Linehan and fucking Spagnuolo.

yeah - had one of the best years under Slin. There was a abrev. For him.
The front office didn’t help him at all & his DC threw him under the bus. I liked him as a play caller.

Overreaction Monday

As smart as McVay is he still makes moves game wise and personnel wise that makes you shake your head.

Team is lighting it up on the ground and he decides to pass every down. (Long track record of doing this)

Trades a boatload of picks for Stafford because he feels like the Super Bowl window is now and doesn’t think Goff has what it takes to get the team over the hump and than proceeds to hire a DC with a so so track record that needs to be taught on the job.

Realky don’t get this guy sometimes.
I've mentioned before that I couldn't believe that McVay didn't slow the game down by running the ball some and grinding it out to cool the cardinals red hot offense down in the first half.
Result;
2 three-and-outs where they decide to pass the ball six times?

Worst game management coaching/ play calling I've seen in a long time.

When the other team is hot on offense, the best way to slow them down is a long time consuming drive.

On both of our three-and-outs they scored a touchdown.

Game pretty much over.

There's nothing wrong with having confidence in your passing game but come on.

After sleeping on this fubar of a game…

The soft coverage is not taking advantage of ADs skill set. There are too many easy options for the QB to go to and the rush hasn’t got enough time to get to the QB.

Morris is like the anti Staley. He’s not featuring his feature players and he is not capitalizing on their immense talent with his scheme.

Maybe he’s trying to be too cute by making the defense too versatile.
