. Having said all that, if I'm holding the #11 pick and the #31 or 32 pick and you have #4 or #5, moving down 6 or 7 slots to pick up another pick in the late first round, would sound pretty good to me.
Goal posts keep sliding.
Conversation was based on Atlanta have a mid-late 1st round pick, 14-23
We all agree that the Atlanta pick is the key, and if it becomes a border line top 10 (#11) it’s a different conversation
If the pick is 16 and Rams are 28-30, they can’t get in top 5

No sliding goalposts. I've been going on the belief Atlanta's pick will be in the top dozen. Others feel they are going to be mid to lower half of 1st. If they're lower then getting to the top 5 would be a chore. Or at least they'd have to throw in another pick (a 3rd?), a 2027 (2nd?). But armed with 2 first round picks.....even if they are mid to late picks.....they could get to the top 5 if they added something else. And if it's for a guy you ABSOLUTELY have to have, then so what? But if Atlanta is in the top dozen (#11 or #12), just those 2 first rounders could convert to top 5.

In 2021 Houston gave up the #3 pick for the #12, plus a first in the next years draft, a third in the next years draft and a first in the 2023 draft. I could see the #5 going for the #11, the #30 (31 or 32) and maybe another pick in 2027.

The problem with trading up for QB is that there are two types of QBs that go there. You have projected elites, or blue chips if you will, and then you have the others. Nothing against those others, as they can work out, but for purposes of moving up you are paying an elite premium for the rarely prized options as they are not available in most drafts.

So any time there is a perceived blue chip QB on that board, getting into that pick is extremely hard to pull off. Historically the reason it happens is the QB refuses to play for the team with the pick. Elway did that. Manning as well. And if you end up with two QBs graded that high by teams then the same will go for the second pick as well, in that getting in there is gonna be tough as hell.

I think what we're going to do in this next draft is target and get after a guy like Dart, who was a bit underappreciated. So it won't be one of those rare elite prospects. It'll be some dude who has the skills McVay wants, which hopefully includes a big dick mentality in that pocket. And this time around they will aggressively position if necessary, the way the Giants just did for Dart, to get the guy they want. Sad thing is they probably need a LT as well.

This "we're gonna draft a QB high" (thought as a possibility this year, certainly for next year) reminds me a lot of that mantra from 2019-2021, "we're gonna go OL early and often". :laugh2:

Yeah getting to #1 or #2 is gonna be hard no matter what they throw in with the two 1st picks. The hope is that the draft is deemed to have 3-5 guys that are perceived blue chip QBs.

i agree with Dz...

if there are several blue-chip QB's declaring, we don't have to throw away our draft capital for arch...

i also think mcvay leans toward getting proven vets...

but what the hell do i know...:laugh4::quiet:

Only the rarest of drafts have that. Last one I can recall, only one really in my draft following history was 1983. But yes that would increase our odds of jumping up to get one.

I still think McVay will find a QB who has the tools he wants, who falls outside that early going range. I suspect they were going to take Dart last draft for example, no proof of it just my suspicion. But it will be someone like him, who is a bit better than the team groupthink ranks him. There is usually one of those types every couple drafts or so. Prob with McVay is he cannot settle for the guy with the iffy arm, as he has the soul of a Coryell OC and prioritizes stretching the field.

Complication now is LT raising its ugly fucking head yet again. I do not trust Jackson. We have everything this season except for maybe the top CB cover man. This is a title roster. But if Jackson can't be depended upon we are fucked. So if things go that route I expect one of our first round picks will be prioritized for LT if at all possible.

My key phrase was "perceived" blue-chip QBs. I'm well aware that nearly 50% of even top-5 QBs flame out and weren't in actuality blue-chip QBs, but at the moment they were drafted, they were perceived to be franchise QBs.

As Dieterbrock stated, 2024 saw 6 QBs drafted in the first 12 picks.
In 2023, there were 3 QBs in the top 5.
In 2021, there were 4 in the top 11.
In 2020, there were 3 in the top 6.
In 2018, there were 4 in the top 10.
In 2012, there were 3 in the top 8.

We can hope that 2026 is a draft like 2024, where there are 3-5 plus perceived franchise QBs. If that happens, chances are higher that one they like is available between 6-12, which is a range they could move up to. Once you start talking about jumping into the top 5, it's gonna be difficult.

You may be right that they might like a Dart type. I have an opposite suspicion. It seems to me that McSnead (a combo of Snead and McVay's MO) likes making major moves when it comes to the most important position. On the Stafford and Goff acquisitions, they were not afraid to trade multiple 1sts to get the top available QB. I suspect making a major and aggressive move up will be their preference.

Listening to McVay talk about Jimmy G, I think there is a real possibility that he could be our starter next year if Stafford calls it quits. That includes that they could easily pass on a QB in rd 1 or at least pass on one with that first # 1 pick. That is unless a slam dunk stud QB falls to them or is within range of a small trade up.

They may see Garoppolo as a guy that can play a few more yrs, so they may take a developmental QB in rd 2 or 3 who they can groom for a few yrs. So I don't see them reaching for a QB and passing on a much better talent considering that McVay seems very happy with Jimmy.

I am in this ^^ camp.
Second choice is an UNPROVEN but experienced pro of at least a couple years, like the guy the WFT traded to the seahawks. I believe McVay had expressed an interest in him.

The guy that held the ball for 10 seconds before he made a throw?

I literally was thinking this same thought last night. Mcvay liked and trusts him. He’d be the guy, imo, to play for a year (or two) while the rookie sits & learns.

Looking through the "history repeats itself" glass, the past Super Bowl winning quarterbacks are for the most part, the superstar quarterbacks. You need the superstar to win it all. Look at the Rams two Super Bowl wins, Warner (hall of fame) and Stafford (most likely hall of fame).

You wanna win it all...go get that superstar quarterback...at all costs! You wanna just be a really good team that has a low chance of winning it all, don't.

That’s true though that QB is not always the first one taken

And that's why McVay traded Goff. He was happy enough to give him the big extension thinking Goff would grow into such a qb. But when he stagnated and wasn't putting in the effort to become such a qb Mcvay shipped his arse for a qb who was already that.
