I know everybody is on the Kool Aid wagon but I have serious reservations about McVay as well. I wish we would of went Shannahan with his father in management.
I guess the bonus is we did get Wade Phillips and someone smart enough to keep Bones around which I admit is encouraging.
Offensive genius doesn't always work out if you draft horrible. (i.e. Mad Mike) God I hope I'm just jaded by the last 10+ years and being overly paranoid here! Lol
Just seriously concerned with this hire and glad to see a few others being concerned as well so I don't feel like a negative crazy ass.
The simple truth is that unless you're getting a proven coach, you have no idea what the results will be. Hell, even then, you're not guaranteed of anything. Fisher was a proven coach.
McVay has a couple things clearly going for him that make success a lot more likely:
1. He has put together a great staff of experienced coaches. Based on what we've heard, he's managed to get the #1 DC on the market, the #1 OL Coach on the market, the #1 Special Teams Coach on the market, and a QB Coach with a hell of a lot of experience as an offensive coordinator. Additionally, his DC, OL Coach, and Special Teams Coach all have NFL HC experience. The most important thing that a head coach can do is surround himself with a quality and experienced staff of assistants. McVay has succeeded in that respect.
2. McVay's leadership skills have been praised by every player and coach who have spoken about him. I haven't heard a single negative word uttered about the guy.
The two most important things to succeeding as a NFL HC are surrounding yourself with a great staff and being capable of leading a NFL locker room.
It seems that McVay checks both those boxes.
Success isn't guaranteed. We might come to find out that McVay isn't capable of leading as a NFL HC. But as it stands now, we have a lot of reasons to be optimistic.
The reason why we hired him is "because when you talked to other people around the league they describe McVay as 'special'."
That really doesn't make sense to me to hire him as a head coach. He might be a decent offensive mind but couple that with his inexperience I don't see this playing out well.
That's not the reason we hired him. That's the reason we interviewed him. He came in for two interviews and even met with Jared Goff. We hired him based on his interviews.
We'll see if it was the right move. At the end of the day, it's all crapshoot anyways. Unlike our past few coaches, he has hired a veteran staff and an expert to handle the side of the ball he's not familiar with.(Fisher hired a veteran staff but chose not to hire an offensive expert)
