Tyler Shough is a guy I’m building interest in. If he were there at 101 (or better yet in the 4th), I think he could be worth the gamble if they like him. He could potentially step right in next year or 2027 - let him learn 1-2 years.

I'd also consider McCord if he's there. Dude has zip on his throws for sure. No matter what, any QB drafted would most likely sit for 2 years.

I don’t necessarily see it as forcing a pick but more taking a swing if they think a year or two with a real NFL QB coach and learning from Stafford will get him to a starter level. If he can get to that point, maybe that QB is not only a year ahead with a fifth year option, but he learns our system well enough to build around him.

Stranger things have happened.

Seems to be some smoke that if the Giants don't get Rodgers they'll draft Sanders just to try to save their jobs. Dynamic reason for drafting him that has nothing to do with his projection and value.

From what I've seen, QB inflation can get a QB thats ranked top 20, like Sanders, drafted in the first five picks but it's not going to get a 3rd round talent drafted in the first.
 
I just don't see the Rams spending a draft pick on a "developmental" QB this year. Rams are all-in with Stafford and they need all their picks to maximize their chances for their SB run.

When MS ultimately retires in a couple years, I'd predict the Rams will find their next franchise QB by paying the big bucks for an established vet. Over the next 2-3 years, Rams are gonna be too good to be in a position to develop a young 1st-round QB prospect.

I tend to agree... but it only takes one team.

I do think you're right on the mark about Sanders though.

Entirely possible and maybe even likely, but I think they may take at least one swing at the bleachers. Both strategies have merit.

Your evaluation or a random sports reportes evaluation isn't the teams. Add to that we don't know where teams value these players.

With the exception of Stafford, has there been an example of an established vet changing teams recently that actually paid off? Rodgers? Wilson? Ryan? Wentz? Watson?

Jimmy g, Derek Carr as well. Baker did well though.

The 5th year option is greatly empowered now for project types who have starter talent. So where they are at 26 is a bit of a wheelhouse in that regard.

Without a 2nd round pick, it really puts QB in play. At this point, anyone they draft at #26 will be a "developmental player", why not invest in QB? And being that "eff them picks" has been the mantra for the team, who's to say that if another Stafford is available when Matt is done, that they dont move on from their D-QB like they did with Goff?

Yes he may be right. I am sure Les is more plugged in on this shit than we are.

But once again the difference right now vs previous years is the insanity of QB salary. So if you have a QB who let's say is a round 3 value, but who has the raw talent to play the position, the late round 1 picks offer security of an additional year which is currently worth more than $50M. And in five years what is that extra year of control going to be worth.

This is projection for me, that teams are going to start using those late round 1 picks for the QBs who represent starter projects. Probably gonna be wrong there. But the logic lines up IMO.

If Les and his staff have already decided that they are picking a QB with the 26th pick of the draft, on March 19. Then he suddenly discarded the entire drafting and evaluating process that has brought him success in the last few years.

If this was a week before the draft, then maybe it’s a smokescreen. But even then, at that pick he’d have more than one player targetted. He’d have a pool of players that may fall to the Rams.

So, no. It’s just Les answering a question.

Could make an argument for Kirk Cousins in Minnesota. Obviously, Drew Brees in New Orleans. Jared Goff in Detroit. Peyton Manning in Denver. Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee. Those are the ones I can recall off the top of my head.

Maybe not "super recently", but IMO there are tons of examples of established vets moving to new teams and finding significant success. Off the top of my head:
Warner to Cards
Brees to Saints
Cousins to Vikings
Smith to Chiefs
Manning to Denver
and as Old School mentioned, Carr, Jimmy G, and Baker Mayfield all found success with new teams.
Older examples include Montana, Cunningham, and Vick all found success with new teams late in their careers.

McVay is a hell of a recruiter, and it's easier for players to change teams now than it used to be. I can see a scenario where a talented vet, stuck on a perpetually shitty team, would be sorely tempted to answer McVay's pitch to join the Rams.

EDIT: Fuckface McCheat to the Bucs is another one

I'd rather go QB in the draft next year. That crop is superior to this one. So many better players available at 26.

I sort of lump Goff in with Stafford, being it was one move. Cousins for sure is legit although I was thinking more about recent trades. In any event, it doesnt seem to be a more realistic path than the Jordan Love type
