Will McVay install some Willie Lampkin Fullback packages this year?

NFL coaches and scouts spoke to Lampkin about moving to full back. That is a fact. It’s well reported. But hell, we know better than those professional idiots even though nearly everyone here hasn’t even watched him :)

He has been training at Full Back and Center all offseason

I was super excited we signed him and remain so. The boy can play and could potentially be an amazing Full Back/ Half Back i.e. a true difference maker on the field (as opposed to a player who warms the bench).

That’s not to say he can’t play Center or Guard, it’s just Full Back / Half Back, and special teams, could be his best route to playing time.

If I had to bet then it’s always best to bet against an UDFA but perhaps he is the exception because if it were not for his height and weight he could have gone 1st round. If you have watched him block then you will know he’s something special.

We actually drafted two Fullbacks in the first round if I remember correctly. John Cappelletti, and Bettis. That's a heck of a backfield.
 
Carrying a fullback on the gameday roster would necessitate leaving someone else off for what, perhaps 2-4 snaps total vs another player who can backup a dedicated spot on offense or defense.

Maybe if he ends up being a ST standout.

Math sure doesn't feel like it's mathing.

Will be fun to see him this offseason and see what happens.

If Lampkin is an interior-OL, with the flexibility to play fullback on a couple short-yardage plays per game, then the question is whether the Rams have 7 or 8 OL active on game-day.

After the five starting OL, there has to be an least one reserve OT (probably McClendon at this point); plus
one reserve interior OL (probably Limmer at this point). Should the Rams have one more OL up on game-day, that 8th OL could be Lampkin.

Agree, I think this is how he makes the roster, not as a fullback but as a backup Olineman who can maybe give you fullback snaps.

Can he make it as a gameday backup OL is the question.

If we do play more 12 personnel then a Half Back becomes a more viable option in west coast schemes. He would make an excellent option for a jumbo package. There are plenty of ways you can use a talented blocker who’s great on the move and in space

Absolutely. He's not a Fullback ... and ... almost certainly will not become a Fullback.

The Rams have said nothing (that I have seen) about a position switch; and McVay doesn't use a Fullback.

It's as noted by you and @dieterbrock. If Lampkin makes the Team (or the Practice Squad) it will be as an OL but he may be an option as a 6th-OL / Lead-blocker in short-yardage / goal-line situations.

I'm gonna laugh my ass off when McVay has Ferguson playing solely F receiver this year and when some reporter mentions more 12 personnel he'll correct them and call it 11 1/2.

Plus the game tapes from preseason that puts him up against NFL players. If he stands out it stands to reason he can play in the league.

I looked up that (1974) draft and we picked Heisman winner Cappelletti 11th overall. After that, and by the 5th round, the Steelers had grabbed Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster. What a haul for them that year.

btw Bettis was in the 1993 draft.
 
Honestly I am more enjoying watching him man handled bigger players. Also he has a knack for getting to the second level in a blink where he does more damage.
