The problem is say KC signs him...if you let him work out a deal, the 30th pick from KC doesn't help much at LT even with a trade up.

I forget all the rules for the diif types of franchise tags. Is there one where he can't go anywhere regardless of interest from other teams?
Transition tag, 1 year deal at avg of top 10 salaries, gives Rams right of first refusal. Can match contract another team offers or let him walk with no compensation
Exclusive tag, 1 year deal at avg of top 5 salaries, player cant negotiate with other teams
Non Exclusive tag, 1 year deal at avg of top 5 salaries, player can negotiate with other teams, Rams can match or let player go at a cost of 2 1st round picks (can negotiate that)

If Jackson continues to play well, he needs to be resigned this off season. The Rams can focus using their resources in other areas for example CB.

So which OL drafted in the 2nd round of the draft would you rather have at OLT right now? AJ is getting 5 mill for this year. I'd gladly give up a 2nd rounder and sign him for a 3-4 year deal at 5-6 mill per. Did anyone make an offer? No idea. But could they have? Sure could have. Rams let him test the market

For me, I think he's shown enough to be the future LT, and I'd sign him long term without hesitation. Between the RFA and suspension, I wonder if there is any issue between the 2 parties? I'd like to think they kept it quiet and took care of him, but I could see where AJ might be annoyed he didnt get the higher RFA tender.
I’d sign him too. That’s not in question. But you know how a second round tender works. If a team offers him, the Rams have the option to match it. It was a low risk move to keep his salary down another year.

Let’s me ask you this? Are you saying that a team cannot win a Super Bowl with Aleric Jackson at Left tackle?
No, but having a better LT, and moving him to RT could give Stafford or any QB, the time he needs to win us another SB.

With free agency before the draft, we almost have to resign AJ. It might cost a pretty penny, but this isn't like signing Notebook after one career start at LT. Jackson has played well for several years now.

Then in the first round next year, if a great tackle is somehow still available when we pick in the 20s, then take him. If not, then take a CB if anyone is worthy of the pick.

Maybe. Maybe not. If I'm not mistaken Jackson has never played RT. Some can handle the switch well. Some cannot.

AJ might not be a top 5 LT but the rams must keep him because they are a completely different team with and without him. They can’t function without a good OL/LT. He is a must have. IMO they really cant afford to give him up because even a top 10 LT draft pick is not guaranteed to be any better than AJ.

Possibly but they have to find one first. Right now Big Rob is playing his position very well
He's at a point where he can't stay healthy and gets beat more often by speed rushers than he used to.

If they let him go and they draft another Greg Robinson or Jason Smith it would be such a disaster. AJ is good enough to start in the NFL and that should be good enough for the Rams. They don't need all superstars.

I say pay the man and keep the continuity of the OL together and just find someone to take Jonah Jackson for a 5th or 6th round pick, the money could help pay for AJ's next contract.

Not disagreeing, it did give him the opportunity to talk to teams though, that's all I'm saying.

The stats just don't support that statement.

Havenstein is in his 10th year.
In his first 5 seasons, he missed a total of 12 games.
In the past 5 seasons (including this year), he missed 9 games.
Has been hurt twice this year... so I am looking at this year and thinking it's not going to get better.
