Le'Veon Bell's holdout has reached point of career-damaging consequences

Le'Veon Bell's holdout from the Steelers, an illogical, costly and self-induced absence that's a major misjudgment of potential market value by the player and his agent, is one of the most ludicrous in NFL history.

I saw a lot of holdouts during my NFL contract negotiating days and was a party to many. But the Pittsburgh running back, whose holdout dragged on through the preseason and is now into the third week of the regular season, has done major damage to his career just in the past two weeks.

    MORE: Explaining Le'Veon Bell's holdout

For whatever reason — supposedly an unsatisfactory amount of guaranteed money — Bell in the offseason turned down a reported five-year, $70 million deal (with $33 million guaranteed) that would have made him the NFL's highest-paid back. After the July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term deals passed, Bell's only option for this season became the one-year, $14.5 million franchise tender.

I predicted in July that Bell would report to the team the week before the season opener, and that "no player is going to give up $853,000 per week."

    Wrong and wrong.

I misjudged the ill-advised intentions of Bell and his agent, Adisa Bakari, who has been making inflammatory statements that Bell might wait until Week 11 to report in order to limit his exposure to injury prior to free agency and, in the process, forego $8.53 million.

Bell and Bakari are living in a fantasy land if they believe the 26-year-old will make up that money in his next contract.

    MORE: NFL's highest-paid players

Both the statements from the agent and Bell's absence into the regular season say several things to NFL team owners, general managers and coaches. As a former GM and team president, I first would consider the brain cramp that is Bell giving up so much money each week.

Then I'd think about the lack of commitment. As Bell frolics in Miami Beach on jet skis and in album-recording sessions, his Steelers teammates are struggling through an 0-1-1 start highlighted by diva wide receiver Antonio Brown's truancy.

Replacement running back James Conner produced Bell-like numbers in Week 1 against the Browns, but he was much less effective in last week’s loss to the Chiefs, in part because the Steelers fell behind 21-0 before Ben Roethlisberger rallied the team by air. Pittsburgh would love to have Bell and Conner as a one-two punch, but that’s not happening right now.

Another problem: For a sixth-year player who has missed 14 games in his career due to injury (not to mention missed games for off-field issues), Bell’s questionable durability was already on the minds of GMs. Bell’s camp only amplifies the injury factor when it talks about his staying out of harm's way with a late-season return.

Finally, I think it’s fair to ask the question: How much does this guy love the game?

    leveon-bell-071718-getty-ftrjpg_ycns0mfgq9hn11txmo74nn1vi.jpg

The biggest mistake Bell and his agent are making is not realizing his best offer as a free agent in March likely would have come from the Steelers. But it appears too much damage has been done, and Bakari's July statement that 2018 is likely Bell's last year in Pittsburgh almost certainly will come to fruition.

Given what has transpired this year, especially over the last two weeks, it's unlikely that Steelers owner Art Rooney and GM Kevin Colbert will franchise Bell again next year at $17.4 million. They instead are likely to let the RB depart via free agency in return for a third-round compensatory pick.

That might be what Bell wants — a fresh start with a new team. He also wants to top Todd Gurley's new deal with the Rams, a reported four-year contract at $14.375 million per year with $45 million guaranteed.

But I see Bell's market value dropping by the minute. He might have already devalued himself to the point where he could wind up with a one-year, "prove it" deal as his best option in the spring.

Bell's absence in the days before the Steelers’ first game ignited a firestorm in the locker room, where offensive linemen Ramon Foster and Maurkice Pouncey ripped the three-time Pro Bowler. Foster said Bell "doesn't give a damn" about the team or his teammates. Added Pouncey: "Honestly it's a little selfish, I'm kinda pissed right now and it sucks that he's not here."

It's extremely rare to hear players make those types of statements about a teammate. How awkward will it be when and if Bell walks into the Steelers' South Side facility at some point this fall?

If Bell does report Nov. 13 — that’s the NFL deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign their tender and play in 2018 — keep in mind what he tweeted July 16: "To all my Steeler fans, trust me, 2018 will be my best season to date." He’ll need to average 317 yards per game (rushing and receiving) over the last seven games in order to top his 2,215 combined yards in 2014.

    Good luck with that.

In the NFC there are really only 2 teams the Rams have as competition for the conference title

Eagles. If Wentz stays healthy. If he goes down then there is only one team that concerns me.

Two weeks into the season is early, I know it's very early.

But..........the only other team the Rams have to be concerned about in the playoffs is their old nemesis the Vikings.

Home field is critical, and so then week 4 and week 15 are hyper critical.

I don't see any other teams being able to compete with the Rams.

LA Rams are 4th most valuable NFL franchise

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...forbes-2018-most-valuable-nfl-franchises-list

By ADAM WELLS

Per the 2018 NFL team valuations by Forbes, the Cowboys lead the way by a wide margin at $5 billion. The New England Patriots ($3.8 billion), New York Giants ($3.3 billion), Los Angeles Rams ($3.2 billion) and the Washington Redskins ($3.1 billion) round out the top five.

The Rams had the biggest one-year jump in value with a seven percent increase from 2017. They also have the largest debt/value percentage (45), with some of that due to the $4.9 billion cost to build a new stadium expected to open in 2020.

The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles checked in at No. 10 with a value of $2.75 billion.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Buffalo Bills are the least valuable franchise at $1.6 billion. The Oakland Raiders generated the least amount of revenue ($335 million), while the Detroit Lions' operating income of $4.1 million is nearly $20 million less than any other team.

The average value of an NFL franchise in 2018 is $2.57 billion.

I just saw what Isaiah Crowell did after his TD run

This kind of thing should get a player ejected. Not just a flag, an ejection.

I wonder how he felt when the clock hit 00:00.......... probably like a knucklehead.

It's crude and classless and vulgar. Children watch football and IMO shouldn't see this.

This is a time when Roger should step up and do something. He should send a really, really powerful message and make a statement that this type of this is TOO far out of bounds. And he should mention grabbing your junk as well.

I love TD celebrations, and the game is way more fun with them. I hated when they stifled the players. I liked "Ocho Cinco" doing the Riverdance and all the other fun silly clebrations. I liked the "bon and weave" when the Rams scored.

I'm sure that some people will think that it's funny but there is no place in sport for this type of behavior.

If I was the commish I'd sit him out for a game just to let people know I was serious. Losing a game check will stop this shit right away.

Jared Goff vs. pressure?

"Los Angeles Rams
Where improvement is needed: Jared Goff's performance when under pressure from the defense.

Calculating my model's win percentages ahead of both Rams matchups projected overwhelming victories (well over 75 percent) in favor of the Rams in both games this season, by far the highest for any team. My models use metrics that are proven to be related to wins in the past and include things like personnel matchups, coaching tendencies and play trends -- the more they are fed with recent data, the better they perform. The tricky part about lopsided wins (33-13 over the Raiders in Week 1 and 34-0 over the Cardinals in Week 2 ... and Arizona has the fewest pressures in the league) is that strategy can be masked.

There are a lot of strong positive indicators for the Rams overall, but one situation to monitor is how Goff's passing production changes under pressure. So far this season, he has a 28.6 passer rating under pressure versus a 117.6 passer rating when not under pressure (last season: 61.6 vs 110.1). Think of -20 as how much the rating for top 10 QBs changes on the routes Goff has been targeting. Three of the Rams' next four opponents (Chargers, Vikings and Broncos) have upper-end ability to get in the face of opposing quarterbacks and should reveal how Sean McVay is going to evolve when it comes to play-calling and using Goff this season. Relying on Todd Gurley to overcome pressures is efficient ... until it is not. Relying on Gurley and being able to make plays via the pass under pressure would project the Rams into the playoffs and beyond with this defense."

Thoughts?...

6 straight & counting ?

I saw one acticle & no response to 6 straight scoreless quarters by The Rams defense.

I understand The Rams haven’t played against the best offenses in the NFL. It is still impressive, plus Talib said in the first /qrts the defense was just freestyling, because they had no film on the Raiders.

Add Aaron Donald is only going to get better.

  • Poll Poll
Okay, so which “new” Ram player has been most valuable through 2 games?

Which “new” Ram has been most valuable through 2 games?

  • Ndamukong Suh. Has made our DL possibly the league’s best.

    Votes: 7 9.7%
  • Aquib Talib. Great leader and superb defender. Almost makes it look too easy.

    Votes: 5 6.9%
  • Brandin Cooks. Has turbocharged an already terrific WR corps.

    Votes: 43 59.7%
  • Marcus Peters. Simply elite. QB’s just refuse to throw into his area.

    Votes: 17 23.6%

I love ‘em all, of course, but I’m gonna go with Brandin Cooks. He’s blown the doors off of my already high expectations.

Best 1st round pick spent since Aaron Donald, himself.

Not an easy choice since Suh gives us possibly the best DL in the league, and Talib/Peters give us possibly the best CB tandem in the league.

An embarrassment of riches, no doubt.

Some stuff I noticed when I re-watched the Cards...

The Ram WR’s were magnificent in catching away from the body throws. We are being spoiled, y’all.

I admire McVay for not going into a shell even with a big lead late in the game.

Can’t praise our OL enough. All game long they were imposing their will and by the mid 3rd quarter on the Card D was exhausted.

Honestly, how do you take away the starting position from Blythe? I’m a big JB fan, but Damn!

Tbh, I’m not seeing the flash plays from our rush LB’s, with the exception of an occasional flash play from Ebu. From Christian, Countess, Shields, and NRC, sure. Plus the other mostly all star starters, of course. But Easley, Longacre, and Lawler have been just so-so, IMO.

There seems to be a quiet, unflappable confidence by both the O and the D. Their body language seems to be saying “we got this”.

Another thing. Isn’t it a joy to watch the D’s play make the job of the O so much easier? Then the O returns the favor by running up a lead that makes the D’s job so much easier. Been a long time since we’ve seen THAT, huh?

Hard to watch the secondary from the tv broadcast, but when I could the Card receivers seemed mostly smothered. What a secondary.

McVay won 34-0 going away and without getting particularly fancy in his play calling. Didn’t need to reveal any more of his new wrinkles. Probably saving them for the Chargers and/or Vikings.

I’m sensing that both the O and the D are just getting warmed up as they continue to gel. Scary thought for upcoming opponents.

HURDLES AT 2-0

Cynthia Frelund of the NFL Network picked one soft spot for each 2-0 team in the NFL. Frelund said the Rams must improve with quarterback Jared Goff under pressure.

“There are a lot of strong positive indicators for the Rams overall, but one situation to monitor is how Goff's passing production changes under pressure. PETERS-TALIB COMBO

The Rams adding All-Pro corners Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters in the offseason has paid off through two games. Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus tweeted just how good the pair has been so far in 2018.

Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib have allowed 37 yards *combined* through 2 weeks

85 different CBs have allowed more than that on their own

— Mike Renner (@PFF_Mike) September 17, 2018
Talib and Peters will once again face a familiar opponent in the Los Angeles Chargers of the AFC West on Sunday.

MORE MATT LONGACRE?

Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton chose one player on each NFL team who he believes deserves more snaps. For the Rams, Moton chose linebacker Matt Longacre — saying Longacre could provide help in the pass-rush.

“Matt Longacre isn't a household name, but he's a pass-rushing asset. He lined up for 35.3 percent of the team's defensive snaps in 2017 and logged 5.5 sacks. The fourth-year veteran has been on the field 36.5 percent of the time this year.

Longacre isn't an All-Pro like Aaron Donald or Ndamukong Suh, but defensive coordinator Wade Phillips can use him to dial up pocket pressure off the edge. In a larger role, he could list among the top three Rams defenders in sacks.”
