PFF grades vs Titans

If you care about such things.

Nothing surprising. Was wanting to mention how A'Shawn Robinson had a really good game and seemed to be everywhere last night. PFF agrees apparently so thought that was worthy since he's gotten some shit lately from fans. CBs are no bueno though, yeesh.

Rams PFF grades: Best and worst performers in Week 9 loss to Titans

Cameron DaSilva
Mon, November 8, 2021, 12:22 PM

The Rams have had weeks where they looked like the best team in football. Then, they’ve had performances where they lay an egg and cause fans to wonder if this team is any better than the Rams squads they watched in the last two years.

Sunday was one of those nights where Los Angeles looked out of sorts and completely overmatched. Tennessee cruised to a 28-16 win at SoFi Stadium, beating the Rams in their own building without Derrick Henry.
Understandably, there weren’t many banner performances for Pro Football Focus to highlight in their game grades. Below are the best and worst on offense and defense, as well as other notables.
Top 3 offense

Surprisingly, two of the Rams’ three highest-graded offensive players were linemen. Whitworth played well and didn’t allow a single pressure, but Rob Havenstein gave up four pressures and two sacks, so it’s shocking that he earned a respectable grade of 71.7 because Denico Autry and the Titans’ other pass rushers made it look easy against him.
Woods put together a solid game with seven catches for 98 yards, including a 22-yarder and a 6-yard rush. He was also great as a run blocker, earning a grade of 90.7 in that department.
Top 3 defense
  • OLB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo: 90.8
  • DE A’Shawn Robinson: 90.4
  • DT Aaron Donald: 88.6
Okoronkwo continues to play at a fairly high level in a limited capacity at outside linebacker. He had three pressures, a half-sack and one stop in only 18 snaps played, 10 as a pass rusher. That was tied for the most pressures on the team Sunday night, making an impact despite not playing much.
Robinson was stout against the run, making four stops and also generating one pressure as a pass rusher. Donald was in the backfield often with three pressures and three stops, finishing with two QB hits and a tackle for a loss to go with his sack.
Bottom 3 offense
  • TE Tyler Higbee: 54.7
  • WR Van Jefferson: 52.1
  • QB Matthew Stafford: 52.1
This was by far the worst performance of Stafford’s Rams tenure up to this point. He was the lowest-graded offensive player with at least 10 snaps. He was pinned with three turnover-worthy plays and finished with two interceptions, struggling for most of the night.
Van Jefferson had one drop on a throw that should’ve been caught deep down the middle for a huge gain, so his grade was lower as a result of that mistake. Tyler Higbee was given an unsightly 20.1 pass-blocking grade, though he only had two snaps where he was blocking in pass protection.
Bottom 3 defense
  • CB Robert Rochell: 57.6
  • CB Dont’e Deayon: 56.9
  • CB Darious Williams: 54.9
See a common trend with these three players? Outside of Jalen Ramsey, the secondary did not play well. Deayon gave up three catches for 18 yards on five targets, which was the best of the three. Williams allowed three catches for 36 yards on three targets and missed one tackle on third down. Rochell played the least of the three and allowed just one catch for 10 yards on a single target.
The Titans didn’t throw for many yards, but there also wasn’t much resistance from the secondary when Ryan Tannehill did drop back to pass.
Other notables
  • S Jordan Fuller: 87.7
  • CB Jalen Ramsey: 79.9
  • NT Greg Gaines: 76.6
  • WR Cooper Kupp: 68.2
  • RB Darrell Henderson Jr.: 66.8
  • C Brian Allen: 59.7
Fuller barely missed out on a top-three defensive grade but he deserves recognition for the job he did tackling in the open field. He made three stops and a team-high seven total tackles, also breaking up one pass.
Ramsey had a terrific interception and allowed three catches for 20 yards on five targets, coming up and making two stops, as well.
Gaines was tied for the most snaps played on defense and he turned it into just one run stop and two pressures – including a half-sack. He played well in place of Sebastian Joseph-Day.
On offense, Kupp was fourth on the team but it was his second-lowest grade of the season. He finished with 11 catches for 95 yards. Henderson was running effectively with 55 yards rushing on 11 carries, earning the fifth-highest grade on offense. And as for Allen, he allowed four pressures and committed one penalty, so he’s had better performances this season.

Lets talk about those officials last night

I'm not blaming them for the loss - because the loss was a result of two turnovers that led to 14 pts.

But man they were bad......

1. Jalen Ramseys "taunting call" after his INT. He gets up and accidently runs into a guy - even tries to help him up for a sec... and they called that taunting?
2. Dante Deayon gets called for a.... "Facemask?" lol... after the play was over.... Two guys were jawing at each other and deayon grabbed his mask. It should have been a no call or double penalty.... these clowns called it a "Facemask"... never heard that before.
3. Whit holding.. we ended up getting the 1st anyway but terrible.
4. Aaron roughing - this was a big big and utterly atrocious call that cost us any chance of coming back.

Am i forgetting any?

That was the worst officiated game I've seen this year by far.

MNF - Bears at Steelers

Monday Night Football: Chicago Bears vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

It's matchup under the lights between two of the NFL's charter franchises, as the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Chicago Bears on "Monday Night Football."

These are two teams heading in different directions. The Steelers (4-3) are contenders in the AFC North division, which is still up for grabs to some degree, while the Bears (3-5) have lost three in a row and would like to put an end to this streak before heading into their bye week.

Pittsburgh last week showed it won't go down without a fight as the Steelers came from behind to defeat Cleveland, while Chicago blew a second-half lead at home against San Francisco. This will be the Bears' first trip to Western Pennsylvania since 2013.

Monday Night Football: Chicago (3-5) at Pittsburgh (4-3)

Kickoff: Monday, Nov. 8 at 8:15 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN
Spread: Steelers -6.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Both offenses have had their struggles

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has had better seasons during his long career, while the Bears' Justin Fields has experienced rookie growing pains. "Big Ben" is 22nd league-wide in passing yards (1,781), 21st in completion percentage (65.1), 17th in yards per attempt (6.6), and tied for 13th in touchdown passes (8). Roethlisberger also has the 13th-worst passer rating (87.6) and sixth-worst QBR (41.4). Roethlisberger usually has better statistical, but Father Time is undefeated. Perhaps his injuries (pectoral/hip/right shoulder) have played a role in that as well, and he has been limited in practice this week.

Wide receivers Diontae Johnson (3 TD catches) and Chase Claypool (15.5 ypr) have combined for 877 receiving yards and have been Roethlisberger's top downfield weapons. Rookie running back Najee Harris has been as good as advertised, as he's 10th in the NFL in rushing yards (479), fourth in rushing attempts (128), and fifth among running backs in receiving yards (273). Expect him to be a major part of the offense on Monday night. But as a whole, the Steelers rank 24th in total offense (330.4 ypg), 16th in passing offense (244.4 ypg), 26th in scoring offense (18.9 ppg), and 28th in rushing offense — despite Harris' best efforts (86.0 ypg).

The Bears, however, haven't been much better on this side of the ball. Fields has taken more sacks than any signal-caller in the league to this point (26) despite only starting six games, and he's also tied for fourth in interceptions (7). The 11th overall draft pick is 32nd in passing yards (991) and tied for 18th in touchdown passes (3) — and he owns both the league's fourth-worst completion percentage (59.5) and passer rating (65.7). However, he has shown his athleticism, as he ranks fourth among QB's in rushing yards (243).

Running the ball has been the Bears' bread and butter in 2021. They are fifth in the NFL in rushing (136.6 ypg), tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns (8), and sixth in yards per attempt (4.6). They've also done it with a running-back-by-committee approach over the last couple of weeks while David Montgomery was sidelined by a hyper-extended knee. But he returned to practice this week and is expected to be activated from injured reserve in time to play on Monday night. He'll team with rookie Khalil Herbert in the backfield with Damien Williams ruled out because of a knee injury. Montgomery's return could provide a spark to Chicago's offense.

2. NFC North vs. AFC North

As these two divisions match up against one another this season, both of these teams have had differing results against their inter-divisional counterparts. The Bears are 1-1 against the AFC North this year, as they defeated Cincinnati by a field goal in Week 2 but lost to Cleveland by 20 points the very next week. The Steelers, however, are 0-1 against the NFC North as they lost to Green Bay by 10 during Week 4. After this game, the Bears will wrap up this portion of their schedule when they host Baltimore after their bye week (Week 11). As for the Steelers, they still have to host Detroit next week, then conclude this portion of their schedule with a Thursday night trip to Minnesota to start Week 14.

3. Defense could be the story

For the most part, both of these teams are known for their effectiveness on this side of ball, but that hasn't always been the case this season. The Bears may be fourth in the league in sacks (21), but they're 14th in total defense (357.5 ypg), 11th in pass defense (232.5), 24th in run defense (125.0 ypg), and tied for 18th in scoring defense (24.4 ppg), with only have eight takeaways on their résumé.

Outside linebacker Khalil Mack will miss a second straight game because of a nagging foot injury while safety Eddie Jackson (hamstring) is listed as doubtful and not expected to play. Linebacker Alec Ogletree (hamstring) is questionable although he hasn't practiced at all this week. One piece of good news for the defense is that Akiem Hicks didn't even appear on this week's injury report so he finally may be completely over his groin injury. Hicks is still rounding into form after missing some time, as he's only totaled five tackles and a sack in his last two games.

As for the Steelers, they're sixth in scoring defense (20.3 ppg) and tied for sixth in sacks (19), but they rank 11th in total defense (345.7 ypg) and are two spots behind the Bears in pass defense (239.7 ypg). They're also 12th in run defense (106.0 ypg) and only have six takeaways this season. Earlier this week, the team traded outside linebacker Melvin Ingram III to Kansas City in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick because of his discontent and lack of production (5 tackles, 1 sack). And defensive lineman Cameron Heyward has been bothered by an ankle injury (only has 1.5 sacks in his last three games).

Final Analysis

Believe it or not, the Bears lead this all-time series 19-7-1. They've also won each of their last three encounters with the Steelers by a margin of 80-54. But the Bears have too many glaring holes this time around, and the Steelers have more talent despite their occasional issues. On top of that, the Bears are just 1-3 on the road this year where they're being outscored 107-43. The Steelers have won each of their last two home games, and three of their last four games overall; they make it four straight wins on Monday.

Prediction: Steelers 28, Bears 14

Just a thought

I don't know about you but I think it's time for McVay to end his bromance with Wolford and coach up Perkins as #2. Wolford has come down to earth with his play IMO. They saw enough potential in Bryce to sign him. I think it's time to see what they have. I'm only saying from here on out the games become far more important. They need a backup QB who can take that position to the next level. They wasted that opportunity to give him game reps against Houston. There might be another when they play the Jaguars in week 13.

I really liked what I saw in Perkins in pre-season. He showed a lot of developmental progress in just one year. He still needs work on working through his progressions but he looked better than Tre Lance in doing it. He's got an adequate arm for all the throws out to 20 yards with good accuracy. I love his compact quick release, something Stafford doesn't always have.

I know a lot are laughing at this, but Perkins is better than most realize. It's exactly why he's on the roster and isn't in AZ, Seattle, or SF. Frankly, I would rather see a quick-strike passing offense between 5-20 yds than a deep- strike oriented offense. With Kupp, Woods, and Jefferson, they can tack on big YAC.

If McVay's the genius people say he is, I think he should evolve his offense into that quick-strike passing scheme and rely upon the YAC to get the big play. Stafford can do it because he can read defenses and occasionally throw that deep strike to keep the safeties honest. McVay didn't adjust his passing attack until the third quarter. That entire first half Stafford was still reading deep to short instead of adjusting to short to deep. That's why he was slow in getting his passes off.

If McVay does that then he will have an offense tailored to both Stafford and Perkins. Right now neither Perkins nor Wolford can play this offensive scheme as it is. Bryce has the talent to play in the NFL, the Rams should use him by getting him ready to play. A good backup QB is top trade bait.

To Win It All?

The Rams have gone "all in" this season. They spent most of their limited 2022 draft capital.

But can it be done? Yes, I think we can win it all. But some things need to change.

Our defense must improve a but. Von Miller should be a huge upgrade and should be a difference maker. We also must avoid any major season ending injuries.

The offense can't afford slow starts where we get down by double digits, especially in the playoffs.

McVay, although a great coach, must adjust sooner when we have games like tonight where the offense is not clicking due to disruption or pressure. Maybe moving the pockets should just be a routine part of what we do.

We need to pound the ball in the red zone at times.

If we can make these adjustments, we'll be there for a deep playoff run.

2 Questions for the Universe

1) Why can’t 9ers play the Cards like the way they play us every time? Where are the miracle plays they always pull off?

2) Where was this Titans team against the Cards? Just conveniently took that game off, huh? Thanks.

Oh well, nobody said a Super Bowl run was going to be easy.

McVay better figure out how to adjust when it’s clear his opponent has outprepped him.

Florida's State Bird: Time for a Change!

Since 1927, Florida's state bird has been the Northern Mockingbird.

Nothing against the Northern Mockingbird, which is a feisty member of the passerines, but it just has never said Florida for me.

In fact, its the state bird of 5 states (Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas being the others).

There is currently a movement to change to a new bird. Among the nominees are the American Flamingo, Osprey and Roseate Spoonbill.

My personal choice is the Florida Scrub Jay. Why? Because its the only species that is endemic to Florida. Plus, its a cool bird that, if you know where to find them, likes to interact with people (often landing on your arm or head if you are still). I went out to find some this morning, and got some great shots. So, without further adieu, I give you my nominee for the next State Bird of Florida, the Florida Scrub Jay!

20 Random Titanic Debacle Thoughts

1. That was really ugly.

2. It starts with the offensive line. Horrible performance, particularly by the interior.

3. Matthew Stafford had little chance on most of the pressure situations, but both INTs were on him. The first one was something that should never happen to a veteran like him. The second wasn't much better.

4. I thought Sean McVay was slow to adjust his protections.

5. Stafford is better than Jared Goff in most every aspect of QB play. The exception, however, might be rollouts and bootlegs. He doesn't look particularly natural on those plays.

6. It was hardly the reason we lost, but there were some bullshit calls by the refs. The holding call on Havenstein that negated a first down in the fourth was ticky tack (the kind of "hold" that can be called on most every play, and should not be called in that situation). The roughing call on Aaron Donald was an absolute joke.

7. Its somewhat ironic that our running game was fairly effective. The situation of the game made it irrelevant.

8. Shame to waste such a strong performance by the defense. 195 total yards/3.5 yards per play allowed.

9. Seemed like the Titans had a decent amount of fans at the game.

10. In 1999, the Rams played the Titans in the middle of the season. They got down 21-0, as the Titans harassed Kurt Warner, sacking him 6 times. Though the Rams made it closer than today's contest (losing 24-21), they would fall that day. We all know what happened in the rematch.

11. FWIW, by the way, my preseason Super Bowl pick was Rams vs. Titans.

12. At least we're not the Bills, who lost to the Jaguars 9-6 today.

13. Or the Cowboys, who were dominated by the Broncos.

14. Or the Packers, who lost with a backup who is clearly not ready to take over for Aaron "I'm such a victim" Rodgers.

15. The Cardinals are making it tough for the Rams. Unlike the Cowboys, Packers and Bucs, who will likely coast to division titles, the Rams have to catch a Cardinals team that is suddenly a full game and a tiebreaker up on them.

16. While I was hoping to see Von Miller tonight, I understand why they would not wish to rush him. Hopefully, he will be ready to debut with the Rams next Monday night against the 49ers, and then will have 2 weeks to get acclimated before the stretch run.

17. I'm thinking that Matthew Stafford is going to need some rest during the bye as well.

18. Matt Gay was a real find. We're fortunate to have him.

19. If the Rams can't get up next week... Monday night... vs a 49ers team that has won the last 4 meetings... need to redeem themselves before the bye....

20. Well, nobody said this was going to be easy. Okay, maybe somebody did, but he's probably going back and deleting those posts.

Raiders to sign DeSean Jackson

DeSean Jackson is expected to sign with the Raiders, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Sunday. Jackson will receive more than the veteran minimum in his contract, Garafolo added.

What a loser, signing with the Raiders instead of staying with the Rams and competing for a ring.
That's probably all one needs to know about this clown.

Good bye DJax we hardly knew ye - and we're better off for it......

  • Question Question
Gameday Morning on OBJ

Warner and Irvin broke down why OBJ and Mayfield didn't mesh. Mayfield needed rhythm and timing (like Goff/Bradford) whereas OBJ could thrive with a QB like Manning (and I think Stafford) who doesn't mind a more creative approach.

With that said, I believe this comes down to the intent and comfort McVay would have w a freelancer like Beckham. Sean likes the idea of expanding the offense but he expects a level of discipline I doubt OBJ fits. On the other hand, if someone wants to single up OBJ on the outside, I believe Stafford would lick his chops.

In the end, beyond the salary cap and the chemistry disruption, OBJ isn't a McVay type receiver. But if Stafford believes he can make it work better w Beckham than he did Jackson, then there could be a serious conversation internally about adding him. Personally, I believe Stafford wants to trust McVay's vision and not have to worry about fitting OBJ into the mix with anything more than working within the framework of a play. Coincidentally, I think Marvin Jones Jr is a similar receiver to OBJ in style and Stafford made that work beautifully. But this isn't the Lions. It's a complex decision and ultimately not one they will choose to acquire.

MVA - Most Valuable Assistant

I'm nominating Kevin Carberry.

He came in, and without us bringing in anyone from the outside, turned this OL from a weakness into a serious strength of this team. Yes, you can credit Stafford some for line calls and such, but only up to the point that it doesn't take anything away from what they and Carberry have accomplished. Brian Allen went from the 1.0 probable bust version to the 2.0 nasty version that took a glaring weakness and made it into a strength. Rob Havenstein used to be thought more of as a run blocker and is now rated as the number 1 in pass block win rate. Edwards, Corbett and Whitworth are playing well, and when Whitworth had to sit last week, nobody even noticed 'Boom in there because there was no dropoff (yes, it was the Texans, but they are still an NFL team).

When you look at the team in terms of units, no other unit has made such a dramatic improvement in play, and when you combine that with the better QB play, we have an offense now that is, at minimum, 2018 level and could (and probably will) exceed that level by season's end, especially when you consider they are still working out some kinks.

Based on the results we have seen, this hire is a slam dunk.

On This Day 2011 Rams Records

This record is not very glamorous.
10 years ago the Rams had a 4pt 3rd quarter (yes 2 safeties) against the Cardinals in a game between the 2 -6 Cards and the 1 - 7 Rams
Patrick Peterson finished us off in OT after the game was tied 13 - 13 after 4 qtrs
PP ran a punt back 99yds to beat us in what was a very strange game during a time many of us would soon love to forget.

Oh how things have changed, I remember those years well, I just wanted a shot at the wildcard after 8-10 games.

Von Miller placement prediction

I've watched a few Broncos games this year and Miller lines up exclusively as a stand up, wide nine LB on the left side of the defense. Coincidentally, Leonard Floyd plays that some side. Though many have mentioned that Von has played other spots in the past, I'm interested in the board's prediction of where each will be utilized by Morris. Will they move Floyd or Miller to the right? If it's a combination, at what percentage do each play somewhere other than the left side? Do either slide inside either on the line or off ball? I'm curious what my fellow fans believe will happen...

Good thing the Rams stayed the course with DL A'Shawn Robinson

There were several fans that thought DT A'Shawn Robinson after the first 7 games was barely average to maybe okay.

There was also speculation that A'Shawn might be a good trading piece before the trade deadline because of his production after the first 7 games not adding up to his salary cap hit.

I'm not doubting that his overall snap counts and performance over the first 7 games didn't warrant some of these thoughts.

A'Shawn has pretty much only been a rotational run stopping piece in the Rams DL rotation this season.

The Rams recently received bad news about their 2nd best interior defensive lineman Joseph-Day.

Maybe it was a fluke but the Rams (appeared to have misdiagnosed) their surging DT Sebastian Joseph-Day's pec injury.

Joseph-Day injured his pec during vs the Lions and was expected to miss a game or 2 based on the diagnoses from the Rams medical and training staff.

Sebastian's stat line vs the Lions in week 7 was 5 tackles, 3 solo, 1 sack, 1 Tackle for loss.

Why did the Rams medical and training staff think Joseph-Day's pec injury was only a one or two week issue?

Why did they clear him to practice this week if there were any tiny indications he should maybe heal up until after the bye week?

I'm not happy with their diagnoses of his pec. Maybe it was a fluke but now he needs surgery and seems to be lost for the rest of the regular season.

Did the Rams take the correct precautions with Joseph-Day? Was there an MRI done on his pec?

Fluke or not, I'm very happy the Rams stayed the course with A'Shawn Robinson. He maybe had his best game last Sunday at the Texans.

Hoping Bobby Brown III is ready to grow up fast and become a pro as his snap counts might start piling up over the next month.

Rooting hard for you A'Shawn Robinson to play more consistent and help Greg Gaines compensate for the loss of Joseph-Day.
