Around the League: NFC North Entering a New Era

NFC North Entering New Era With Aaron Rodgers' Departure, Vikings' Eye on Future

The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings have captured 11 of the last 12 NFC North titles. Since the change to the eight-division format occurred in 2002, the Detroit Lions don't have a single division title, while the Chicago Bears have just four.

The Packers have easily been the most dominant franchise among the group with 12 division crowns in that span, while the Vikings are the reigning champs. But a sea change may be on the way near the shores of Lake Michigan.

With the Aaron Rodgers trade to the New York Jets and the Vikings sniffing around potential long-term replacements for Kirk Cousins, both teams are in a transition phase.

A double-turn the level of Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13 may be forthcoming within the next year, as the Bears and Lions vault to the top of the division because their rosters are being built in the correct manner.

For this to occur, both the Packers and Vikings must experience downturns, which is entirely possible.

Green Bay has long been spoiled by Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback play. The Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers eras lasted from 1992 until this spring. It's an unheard of run of quarterback prosperity. Maybe Jordan Love continues the trend. However, the transition from Favre to Rodgers wasn't without its stumbling blocks. The Packers plummeted to 6-10 in the latter's first year as a full-time starter after finishing 13-3 during the previous season.

Love will experience growing pains along the way, which will create opportunities for other teams within the division to capitalize. The Packers know this, and they are prepping for life without the four-time NFL MVP.

According to ESPN's Dianna Russini, they believe in the 24-year-old signal-caller, but they are "preaching patience." Their expectations fall in line with those of a first-time starter, not who preceded him.

Love's supporting cast is young, too.

Wide receivers Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure are entering their second seasons. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks have been added to the mix this year as second- and fifth-round draft picks, respectively. Plus, the Packers drafted tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft to fill the void at that position. Time will be necessary for these skill-position performers to build a rapport.

Minnesota could start to decline this year and turn to a full-blown rebuild a year from now as the organization strongly considers a move away from Cousins.

Quietly, the Vikings front office is already looking at other possibilities.

"There were all those draft rumors," NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show. "Half of those are just completely wrong. A lot of the stuff with the Vikings trading up for the quarterbacks was proven wrong. Will Levis was sitting there when the Vikings' pick came up at No. 23 and they didn't take him."

Just because Minnesota chose not to take one of the top quarterback prospects this year doesn't mean it wasn't interested.

"They were making calls about moving up very high in the draft," Pelissero added, "but my understanding is that was for one player and that was Bryce Young, who ended up going No. 1, and so there went any possibility for Minnesota to go get him."

Cousins, who turns 35 this summer, is in the final year of his current contract. Clearly, the Vikings are gauging their next step at the game's most important position.

They weren't forced to make a move this year. Next year will be different.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah already showed his hand with a willingness to make a move. The 2024 campaign could very well feature an entirely new-look Vikings offense, especially if running back Dalvin Cook goes by the wayside.

"The Dalvin Cook trade, probably to his hometown Miami Dolphins, could occur anytime, even this summer," the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Charley Walters wrote coming out of the 2023 NFL draft. "The best the Vikings can expect for Cook, who turns 28 just before the season, is a fifth-round draft pick."

Cook has led Minnesota in rushing yards in each of the last five seasons.

The Vikings have already moved on from aging veterans Adam Thielen, Eric Kendricks and Patrick Peterson. A new quarterback to marry with a general manager and head coach hired last year seems the logical next step.

Conversely, the Bears are finally building around quarterback Justin Fields properly. After two years of failing the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and seeing him try to carry the entire offense, general manager Ryan Poles landed wide receiver DJ Moore as part of the trade with the Carolina Panthers for this year's No. 1 overall draft pick.

The 26-year-old Moore is a proven target with three 1,100-yard receiving campaigns already under his belt. Tight end Robert Tonyan arrived as a free-agent signee to help as another receiving threat alongside Cole Kmet. The draft provided key components as well.

Darnell Wright was the class' highest-rated right tackle and he'll now serve as the Bears' offensive anchor after the team selected him 10th overall. Fourth-round running back Roschon Johnson gives Chicago another physical runner to serve in a rotation alongside D'Onta Foreman and Khalil Herbert. Fellow fourth-rounder Tyler Scott is a legitimate deep threat to complement the team's wide receivers.

Natural growth should occur as well.

Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy told reporters that Fields is "light years ahead" of where he was last year, which should be the case in his second year within the same system.

As Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer wrote, "[Fields has] made the comment to the coaches over the last couple of weeks that he could never have had the conversations with them last year that he's having now, which is a great sign for where they are collectively."

For the Lions, their offseason moves had far less to do with improving their offense and more to do with solving their defensive issues.

Last season, those in Honolulu blue and silver finished 30th in pass defense, while the other side of the ball held up its end of the bargain by ranking fourth in total offense. Clearly, a David Bowie level of changes in the secondary became necessary.

Amani Oruwariye, Mike Hughes and DeShon Elliott are gone as a result. Enter free agents Cameron Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The Lions didn't stop there. General manager Brad Holmes also drafted linebacker Jack Campbell and hybrid defensive back Brian Branch in the first and second rounds, respectively.

The 6'5", 249-pound Campbell has a tremendous feel for zone coverage with the length to squeeze throwing lanes. His coverage grade led all collegiate linebackers last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Gardner-Johnson and Branch are interchangeable parts who can seamlessly slide from safety to over the slot.

Holmes also used Detroit's extra draft capital to replace running back D'Andre Swift and tight end T.J. Hockenson (traded during 2022 season) with Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta.

The Lions have been competitive since the moment Dan Campbell became their head coach. The record may not have always reflected their improvement, particularly in Year 1, but the growth between the first and second seasons was significant. Another leap should be expected as part of the staff's third year together.

As the Packers and Vikings take a step back, the Bears and Lions will rise, marking a new era in the Black and Blue Division.

Snakes, Frogs, Lizards and Pollywogs

I may not get one response to this silly post, but I can't help myself. All you city folk, have you actually held these creatures in your hands?
I actually ate rattlesnake when I was a boy scout, even though I was utterly disgusted by it years later when smelling a cage full of rat eating rattlesnakes. I also had my face within 12 inches from a copperhead snake who's eyes were closed after it came out of hibernation in East Texas.

Fess up fellow city boys, what kind of creatures outside of cats and dogs have you handled?

Any of you have a pilot's License?

So I decided to pursue a life long goal of flying and spending time in the air. The whole mechanics and industry has always fascinated me. I've finally gotten to where I want in the IT world and want to start pursuing life long ambitions.

Right now I'm set to get my medical in 2 weeks and start working on my license. I'm not sure about working in the industry yet, was looking for more on the private side. (not 100% on that though) I know at least one of you flies because I remember you posting pictures of the stadium being constructed.

Any advice, pointers, ideas, or info you might have would be really helpful.

2023 Rams Tight Ends

I am anxious to see Davis Allen and Hunter Long. Not sure what to expect with these two?

Is Higbee a cut/trade candidate with $9M cap number? If so the Rams would be awfully unproven at TE, unless someone like Skow pivots over.

Hopkins just hasn’t emerged, outside a solid SB performance.

Last year we went into the season with 2 TE’s.

What are you thinking about our TE position?

No "Rookie Minicamp" for Rams

Rams are only NFL team not scheduled to hold rookie minicamp

Cameron DaSilva

On Thursday, the NFL announced dates for every team’s rookie minicamp in May – every team except the Los Angeles Rams, that is.
The Rams were the only team on the list that didn’t have rookie minicamp dates listed, and it’s because they aren’t going to hold one – not in a traditional sense, that is. And this isn’t out of the ordinary for them. They usually onboard their rookies with an orientation-type program rather than getting them on the field for three days of practice, preparing them for life as professional football players.

Some teams will only have one- or two-day minicamps, but most will utilize the maximum of three days to get their rookies acclimated.

Though the Rams aren’t scheduled to hold a rookie minicamp, they will have OTAs coming up soon and mandatory minicamp in the middle of June before they break for the summer before training camp.

  • OTA Offseason Workouts: May 22-23, May 25, May 30-May 31, June 2, June 5-8
  • Mandatory Minicamp: June 13-15
The Rams will be welcoming a lot of rookies into their building this offseason after selecting 14 players in the draft and signing 26 more as undrafted free agents. They make up almost half of the 84-man roster right now, so it’s an inexperienced group in Thousand Oaks.

Favorite Slang words/phrases when you were 10 years

I specifically targeted age instead of decades. So now @Memento can join in... Give the slang word or phrase.
Mine would be "Bad," meaning good. Well before Michael Jackson thought to make a song about it when he was probably still in diapers, singing for the Jackson-Five..
I imagine:
@nighttrain was saying "Hey...." like Arthur Fonzerelli
@Allen2McVay was probably saying "Groovy!"
@Dodgersrf was saying "tripindicular"....or full on Spiccoli, "Dude, that was my head!"
@Merlin? Some word or phrase from Dance Fever with Danny Terrio...

Even if you see someone post's something, please give the region or where in town. I was in Whittier, CA at that time but shyte might be different in the Valley where Merlin was (Gag me with a Fork!)

WR Roster Spots

Last year the Rams kept 7 WR’s at cut down.

Atwell, Jefferson, Kupp, and Skowronek are the locks. Does that mean 3 spots are up for grabs?

I think Xavier Smith lands the Brandon Powell spot.

Nacua being a draft pick has an inside track.

Does Lance McCutcheon step up, or does he go the route of Jacob Harris… one and done?

What do you think about our WR unit?

Tutu Atwell WR 5-9 165 10/7/1999 (23) 3 Louisville

Rob Havenstein: 'We're building foundations here in a good spot'

Rob Havenstein: 'We're building foundations here in a good spot'

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Some days, it does seem like it was just yesterday that offensive tackle Rob Havenstein was chosen in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Rams.

Other days, when talking to another veteran teammate, it dawns on him how quickly time has passed.

"I'll be talking with (tight end Tyler) Higbee or somebody who's kind of been around for awhile, and we start talking about some time and tell our stories, and then come back and be like, 'man, that was seven years ago!' Havenstein said with a smile and a laugh last week. "It's like, man. So it did go fast in that regard."

A lot has changed during that time, and if he needed another reminder, he got one this offseason between Los Angeles' offseason departures and the 40-man rookie class it pulled together over the last five days.

However, going into his ninth season, he said that no two teams are the same, whether a roster loses one guy or 40. And he feels good about the direction things are headed.

"You can't compare two teams to one another," Havenstein said. "Obviously we had a big departure of people, we have limited people in the building right now, we'll have a bunch of new faces here in a couple of weeks. But the faces we have seen now, it's good to be back. There's something about this place that's special. The renewed energy that we have in this place of having fun again, getting after it, competing, rolling the dice and seeing what happens, and I think I think that's been shown the first couple of weeks of workouts and just as this first week of field work. Guys are locked in, ready to go while still having fun doing it. So we're building foundations here in a good spot."

That's especially felt within his own position group this spring after a fall and winter of attrition due to injury, with players like Coleman Shelton, Logan Bruss and Alaric Jackson all back around. The Rams started 13 different offensive line combinations in 17 games last year, with 14 different players starting at least one game.

Havenstein said he likes everyone in the room, so it's good to see them around. Collectively, they enjoy each other's company and have a special camaraderie – players are still helping each other out even amongst the competition, Havenstein said, which he added has been good to see.

"I think everyone came back ready to work, ready to go after it," Havenstein said. "They've been putting in work. Guys that were here rehabbing, it's been showing; guys who went home, it's been shown too. So I'm very pleased with where everyone is now. Now we just got to look forward to building some building some rapport with everyone, because like every NFL year, there's no slated starters anywhere – besides maybe a couple people. I don't think anyone's taking (defensive lineman) Aaron (Donald)'s spot."

Soon, that room will have new faces. Of those 40 rookies, five are offensive linemen, including second-round pick Steve Avila, fifth-round pick Warren McClendon Jr., and undrafted free agent signees Sean Maginn, Mike McAllister and Grant Miller.

Havenstein and his nine years of experience know how special it is to have the chance to be on an NFL roster, whether drafted or undrafted.

"It's something I hope the guys that come in here really don't take that for granted, because it is hard," Havenstein said.

Article: Van Jefferson feels he's getting back to himself

Rams WR Van Jefferson feels he's 'getting back to myself' after injury-shortened 2022 season

Published: May 07, 2023 at 02:08 PM

Injuries at key positions resulted in the Rams finishing the 2022 season with one of the worst records in the league, just one year removed from when Los Angeles took home a Lombardi trophy.
But players are getting healthy and looking ahead to 2023, including wideout Van Jefferson, who said this week that he's excited to be getting back to normal workouts after being hindered over the last year.
"It's been great being back and working with … those guys, getting back to myself and I'm feeling pretty good," he said, via the team website.
Jefferson, a 2020 second-round pick, got an opportunity for more playing time during the Rams' 2021 Super Bowl season due to other players' injuries, and took advantage of the chance. The 26-year-old finished his second NFL season with 802 yards and six touchdowns, second on the team only to Cooper Kupp.

But instead of being able to build on his breakout season in 2022, Jefferson was one of the many Rams players whose snaps were limited by injuries. Due to a pair of offseason knee surgeries, the latter happening in August, the wide receiver didn't make his season debut until Week 8. And even upon his return he wasn't at full form immediately, making his first catch in Week 11.
Though the targets and receptions ramped up, it was never at the level of the previous year, and Jefferson finished with 24 catches for 369 yards.

"It was tough, it was a tough process to go through," Jefferson said. "But from the games I got back, got to experience a lot of things, got to do a lot of things. I think this offseason was just about me getting healthy. Obviously the knee injury, having two surgeries is tough, but like I said, I persevered through that, and now it's just about me getting my balance back together, getting the strength in both legs, and being able to do the things I know I'm able to do."

The return of a healthy Jefferson would definitely spell good things for a Los Angeles squad looking to rebound. Now the second-most experienced pass-catcher on the roster and the likely No. 2 WR after Allen Robinson's departure, Jefferson's leadership and talent will be essential if the Rams want to return to their previous success.

Another hopeful sign for L.A. is that Jefferson isn't the only player getting back to normal activity, as quarterback Matthew Stafford said a few weeks ago that he felt “refreshed” and is a full-go for offseason workouts after missing the final seven weeks of 2022 with concussion symptoms and a spinal cord contusion.
Because of the timeline of each of their injuries, Jefferson only played three games with Stafford under center last season, and he says having him back on the field has been an energy boost for the entire team during workouts.
"Oh yeah, I think that makes a huge difference," Jefferson said. "I think (it does) for all the guys that are out there throwing with Matt. He's looking great, he's always been great, so it's just great to be out there with him again and see him healthy, and see him slinging it like he does. It's good to just be out there and get some passes with him."

New NFL Stadiums Under Construction

I came across news the Bills were building a new stadium and the Titans have one under construction too. Both are set to open in 2026.

I hadn’t seen pictures before, here are a few. More at the links.

Buffalo Bills

An open air 60,000-62,000 seat stadium to include stacked seating and a canopy overhang to protect fans from the elements.

The canopy will cover 65% of the seats and help protect against wind and precipitation. It will work together with the perforated multidimensional exterior skin of the stadium that creates wind confusion to prevent swirling winds from getting to the field level.

Tennessee Titans

An enclosed 60,000 seat stadium with high-tech ETFE translucent roof same as SoFi.

Mike McAllister, C, Youngstown State Volunteer Firefighter

Had no idea this guy was a volunteer firefighter as well. Found this neat video I thought I'd share.

Makes you root a little harder for the kid! Also the guy saying, "Anything but Cleveland!" has me cracking up.

If he can pull bodies from aburning building I'm sure he can toss some guys in the trenches :)

The NFC West RB Units

I was hoping for a top RB this past draft as I feel we are behind the 49’ers and Seahawks in the running back room.

Seattle looks real good. Walker gained 1000yds last season, and they add Charbonnet. They also play a style to be tough running the ball.

McCaffrey is a top player if he stays healthy.

We need Akers ON HIS GAME starting week 1. Evans has a lot of sleeper to him but I think I see more in Akers game.

Cards are the Cards.

How do you see it? Did I miss any significant acquisitions?

San Francisco 49ers - Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, Tyrion-Davis Price, Jordan Mason

Seattle Seahawks - Zach Charbonnet, Kenneth Walker III, Deejay Dallas, Kenny McIntosh

Los Angeles Rams - Cam Akers, Zach Evans, Kyren Williams, Tiyon Evans

Arizona Cardinals - James Conner, Keaontay Ingram, Corey Clement, Ty’Son Williams

Mack’s Way Too Early Win/Loss Prediction

I’ll edit this once I see the schedule as bye weeks and multiple weeks on the road may affect the outcomes, but I’m feeling pretty optimistic about our young’uns and how McVay is gonna both emphasize the run more and spread the ball around in the pass game. I also think our D is gonna really gel pretty early and surprise many in this board and in the sports media.

HOME
Seattle Seahawks - Win
San Francisco 49ers -Win
Arizona Cardinals - Win
Philadelphia Eagles - Loss
Washington Commodes - Win
New Orleans Saints - Win
Cleveland Browns - Win
Pittsburgh Steelers - Loss
AWAY
Seattle Seahawks - Loss
San Francisco 49ers - Loss
Arizona Cardinals - Win
Dallas Cowboys - Loss
New York Giants - Win
Green Bay Packers - Loss
Baltimore Ravens - Loss
Cincinnati Bengals - Loss
Indianapolis Colts - Win

That’s 9-8. I only have us losing to the Packers cuz they’ll have us playing them late in the season like they always do. If we play them early and not on a short week or the 2nd consecutive away game, I think we win and go 10-7. That said, I think we surprise the division early with division wins against all three division opponents.

I don’t think we’ll compete with the Eagles or Bengals, but we’ll surprise with how complete of a team we are with surprising rookie contributions including X-man on offense and on D LT’s nephew among others.

I think we’ll occasionally get gashed in the run fame which will skew our numbers and rankings, but we’ll be stout enough to win more than we lose.

If we get that 10-7, I think that gets us a 7 seed WC spot in the playoffs which would be a far sight greater than most expected after last season.

Edit: of course, all of this is contingent upon us being healthy
