Measuring Tavon

I concur with getting Tavon deep. Britt seemed to be the deep thread last year. The year before IIRC Tavon did have a few long catches yet the Rams used the TE on deep seem routes more. The Rams also have not had the best QB play either. Goff can hit him deep and Tavon can get behind anyone. I can't remember what announcer it was that said Tavon is a good route runner. The problem with Fisher's offense was they kept throw the smoke route/WR screen to him with no surprise to the defense. You have mix up his routes.
Couldn't agree more 65.Everyone including Tavon has been held back
by fisherball.

I'm just gonna put this out there for y'all...

Lets ask Goff if he would like to give the guy a shot to be a #1 WR again since we don't currently have one. I'm worried about Tavon,Gurley& Quinn right now and I don't care about Tee Shirt logo's for grown arse men. Although it worked once for Vermeil with everybody in the wheelbarrow. No Tee Shirts though. Martz like gimmics in the locker each week too.

The Greatest weekend every year we focus on FORGIVENESS is this weekend.:flanders:

Belushi did awesome for 3 years till he thought he was okay and fired his Minder and then he left us. :death:

Luckily, as Rams fans we don't need to forgive him; he didn't do anything to us. There is no grievance for us to forgive. All we have to do is decide if someone with chronic (heh) issues regarding illegal substance use (I won't say abuse, in order to avoid that argument) is able to help the team and worth the risk.

If we could get him for a 6 or 7 pick, sure. Anything more and it's not with the risk. There's like, just guesstimating here, a 95% chance the guy gets suspended before or during the season. That's based on a lot of really complex information, such as: he hasn't played the last two seasons and he's had the same issue with being on the field since college.

A throwaway pick like a 6 or 7 is fine. Even a 5th pick is liable to get some kind of playing time during the season. Greater than a 5% chance anyway.

Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance. *However*, past performance is pretty much the only indicator we have. His past performance shows that he won't be there when we need him... Which is when games are getting played.

I'd love to have a wr of his caliber when he's playing, but we've hired too many players based on what they used to do and not what they will do for me to feel comfortable, or think it's wise for the team to feel comfortable, bringing in a guy who doesn't really have a recent "used to do" that would even be worth a 7th round pick. What I mean is that 2 years of not playing isn't worth a 7th round pick for a trade. That's worth a futures contract or a vet minimum deal or whatever, only after he's been released.

Connor Barwin: Eagles were ‘smart’ to cut me
Posted by Michael Gehlken on March 24, 2017

Connor Barwin gets it. He understands.

The veteran defensive end carried a lofty salary. On the other side of the ball, a young quarterback in Carson Wentz needed more surrounding pieces to facilitate his development.

What followed was logical.

The former Eagle said Friday that there are no hard feelings for his release. Quite the contrary, in fact. Barwin told the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane the Eagles were “smart” for choosing to part ways with him as they did, a March 9 move that sliced $7.75 million off the salary cap.

“Obviously, there was a ton of money invested in the defensive line room with Fletcher (Cox), Vinny (Curry), (Brandon Graham) and myself,” Barwin said to McLane. “Now they have a quarterback that appears to have a chance to be a really, really good player.

“I wish it wasn’t the money I was getting paid, but I think it was smart to use that money and help Carson.”

Barwin, 30, spent four seasons in Philadelphia.

That’s not long enough for a city statue to be built — Paul Walker may have a better chance in San Clemente, Calif. (seriously, just watch) — but it was long enough for Barwin to leave an impression for the class he showed while on the roster and grace exhibited once off it.

And to his point, the Eagles were active this month on offense.

They signed wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith along with offensive linemen Chance Warmack and Stefen Wisniewski. Veteran Nick Foles also joined the quarterbacks room on a two-year deal.

More help for Wentz.

Barwin understands.

Would be ironic if he injures Carson Wentz on a sack when we face the Iggles.

Joyner being moved to Free Safety?

A free safety has to act as a third corner very often if they are in a base defense.

As a former slot CB, LaMarcus Joyner has plenty of experience being the third CB. So that duty won't be new to him.

Often you can't substitute players and go to a nickel or you are set up in a run defense when a play is called/run.

You usually can match the other team's personnel if you want to do that.

A little more responsibility in deciding which player to cover as well.
Covering the slot you know who you are covering.

Well, he's typically in zone. It will be more responsibility based on reading the QB and route concepts but less responsibility in terms of man coverage.

Thinking it through I will concede you are more correct on this subject.

I appreciate that. I wasn't necessarily going for that. I was simply looking to clarify a few confusing comments.

Fantasy WR Success by round the last 10 Years

I appreciate the content, SYG, but it doesn't really tell us anything new. Garcon and Crowder aren't outliers in the true sense of the word. Rather, your data shows that the higher the pick, the better the chances that the WR pans out. I think that's something we can all agree on.

As for adding WR talent early, it's likely going to happen and seems like the right move. Although, we differ on the WRs we'd add early.

You are right outlier was poor word choice. However, they are rare examples of guys drafted in round 4-7 being very productive. Lately I have seen posts that bring up Garcon and Crowder saying why cant our guys do that? My response to those posts is temper expectations because those guys are the exception not the rule. I posted this article just to give data to help illustrate that point.

New Coaching Staff's Mistakes

Well, since no one else is gonna say it, I guess I will. At the new staff mixer where McVay officially introduced himself to everyone at the same time, the pizza selection was abominable.

Other than that, I'd say the closest thing I would call a mistake is letting benny jet out of town. I think they already had eyes for Dunbar and I wouldn't be surprised if he does well, although I doubt he'd return kicks as well as Cunningham.

At first I didn't agree with letting britt go either but after reading about him trash talking ,I guess his attitude was one of those things we don't get to see much and I can now understand why they didn't resign him. They do need to replace him though, so the jury is still out as with all these decisions. All in all, I love this off season so far and where some people will usually look to the negative aspects of a player, which every player has, I think the potential for our new guys to succeed is very, very good.

With no first-round pick, Rams keeping an eye on NFL draft dominoes

Andrew Whitworth is basically like a number one pick this year.He takes the pressure off of Greg Robinson. He anchors the edge , while Greg gets tos do the same on the other side as a after thought.--John Sullivan gets to be the leader & eyes of the line,& the extension of McVay already knowing his base offense of Philosophy.

Jared Goff is almost like a 1st Rd pick , having a year to observe & then get reps. Has never even won a game, so it's all new to him. Plus he comes in as a starter day one by McVay. Totally different vibe. Last year was like a waste of a first round pick , because it never helped the core of The Rams team.

---That right there is the core & foundation of 2017 moving forward.

The Rams have Gurley & Austin as playmakers.--Woods comes in as a nice
Veteran FA .He comes in as player that fit we not me. He will make the plays when asked. He will push players & come to work everyday giving it 100 .

Then there is such a young raw bunch of players with some NFL experience that need to be coached up .

--Kromer comes in with Jamon Brown , A.,Donnal,& Wichmann as core depth guys coming into there 3rd season. All have been starters the last 2 seasons.

--Then Higbee was hurt & court cases last season.Roomed with Goff , and gets his first real taste of OTA's being healthy.
Hemmingway is a good looking athlete that works hard & will get better.Cory Harkey a solid Vet.

WR -- The young rookies that were brought in. Thomas was a solid special teams player who was asked to do a lot.
He took over for a hurt Bennie.Spruuuuce was hurt all last year & McVay keeps bringing his name up. You can just turn on the preseason game He & Mannion. Copper was going to be a starter or core player coming into 2016 , but got hurt early & was never the same.Bradly is a special teams guy.

Aaron Green shows up on film imo. Brown is in 3rd season as a Ram RB.
--Lance Dunbar is going to be exciting to watch. He has speed. He is also playing for a contract & chose The Rams because of the opportunity of playing time .

Les knew going in 2016 Jared Goff was the pick. The Rams could have signed him before the draft like a Guaranteed FA. He then could have not had to go to the draft for the first 2 DAYS of the Draft.

The Rams have a chance to get a first Rd talent with the 2nd pick. It will. be interesting to see who is the best player available . I have players in mind when the time comes.
In fact The Rams will find a special offensive core player in the 2nd & 3 rounds of picks . My question is do they trade up , back ??

I think trade back & up to find a solid TE in the 2nd Rd .The kid that ran a 4.5 40 z

A couple of small school TE's:

Mason Shreck (Buffalo) 6'5" 255 lbs 4.70 / 40

A couple of plays below worth noting:

@ 1:58 mark ; makes outstanding block before releasing for a short route

@ 3:42 mark ; Catches TD after crossing with the outside receiver ; the CB gets rubbed a bit, but Schreck gets to the outside very quickly for his size.

@ 4:45 mark ; makes great site adjustment to the ball on a wheel route.

Andrey Avgi Western Oregon 6'6" 270 lbs 4.75 / 40

An athleticTE with more experience on the basketball court than playing football. Could be a good red zone target.

Tim Tebow’s 2nd Act

Dude will just about pay for his crappy minor league salary with the crowd he attracts to the games. Good for him, although he's gonna have to hit better than .250 if he wants to cruise through the world's most grueling minor league system.

Baseball's no joke man. But at least you know he's got the work ethic. Hopefully he'll go on a tear and at least get himself up to some AA level before he's 30.

Rams signings (Westbrooks, Longacre, Trinca-Pasat)

Honestly guys, would you rather have Chris Long finishing his career as a Rams reserve, or do you want Westbrooks ? In limited action with the Pats last season Chris had 4 sacks, that's about what Westbrooks has had in his career. The money should be right about the same for both players. McVay could add another high quality, high octane veteran, and one of the most popular players of the last decade. jmo.
