Grading the 2016 Draft

This is something that I think is fun to do as we go forward in years 3+ and we see what guys really become. Thinking about Littleton's development while in the other thread got me thinkin about it, so here's a quick set of grades given production vs draft spot:

1. Goff: A+. His stats in his first 3 years are on par with the greatest QBs in this game's history. Super Bowl challenger in year three. Anything less than an A+ is MFing wrong.

4. Higbee: B+. He gets this grade due to the round 4 selection and the fact that he's started for us since. Not an impact player, but more a blue collar type starter that you can't have enough of on a team. As a TE he's a stout blocker and can make some plays for you in the passing game.

4. Cooper: C-. Started off looking like a core teams guy who could play a bit in the slot. Ended up with a broken psyche after the 2017 playoff meltdown on returns. Gets this grade due to his teams contributions before the talent squeezed him off the roster.

6. Hemingway: F. Typical Fisher type selection, which I am fine with by the way in round 6. But in spite of his size/length/athleticism he never became a core teams guy and never developed as a TE.

6. Forrest: F. Same as above. This guy should have been a teams demon.

6. Thomas: B-. Core teams player since his drafting, demonstrated ability as a plus gunner. Made McVay's roster in his final year of team control. Might be a starter down the road but it probably won't be for the Rams.

UDFA Littleton: A+. Core teams player early. Has grown into a Pro Bowl level starting ILB, good vs the run and pass. Remarkable find.

Overall grade: A. Rams ended years of futility by manning up and going and getting their franchise QB, which is a successful draft in any year. But they also managed to find a Pro Bowl LB and a solid TE starter. Not amazing or record breaking, but the kind of draft that you build a team around nice job Les Snead and company, and I include Jeff Fisher in that as well.

9.

Los Angeles Rams (1-0) - Previously: 10.
The Rams prevailed in their season opener, but there are some major concerns. Jared Goff struggled mightily with his accuracy, especially when he was getting pressured. He didn't see open receivers. Meanwhile, the defense surrendered 27 points to a Carolina team that was constantly killing itself with unforced errors. Given how many times the Panthers shot themselves in the foot, Los Angeles should have prevailed by double digits.

MNF: Texans at Saints

yes it does. knee down, call time out.

.

I guess depends on when the ref calls it. I know in college, if you're down, the play is called dead regardless if there's defender contact or not. In the NFL you typically have to be down by contact. I think there might be a rule that if you "give yourself up" the ref could blow it dead but could make argument that he was still rolling prior to the defender made contact and who knows maybe could have taken two seconds?

Anyways, still not really sure why they played such soft coverage on that play.

Looking forward to the Rams giving Saints their first lost of the year.

All Rams Fans going to the game Sunday

If you arrive super early such as 7 am, you can eat breakfast at the Pantry on the corner of 9th and Figueroa. Then drive to the Coliseum and park for free on the street alongside USC. There is a great bar & grill on the opposite side of the street and you can head in there and drink some soft drinks or beer. (You could breakfast there but the Pantry has been open since 1924 and never closes; it is open 24/7. And what portions!! And the best coffee in town for only 50 cents; yes, that's right 50 cents all you can drink. (And believe you me, they still make money on the coffee.
The place has TVs so you can watch the morning game. Then head over to the Coliseum tailgating area and have fun. BTW-the Pantry has the only exposed grill in the USA and that's fun if you sit at the counter. Go Rams and let's beat those crybaby Saints--especially Sean (Bounty Gate) Peyton.
And don't take any smack from those genetically-deficient Saints fans.

Game balls for today?

Game balls, (got lotsa balls) in order of impressiveness:
  1. Littleton- just an athlete. Maybe not prototypical ILB, but an athlete you want on the field to make good things happen.
  2. Fowler- Similar to Littleton, he just makes things happen. The sacks, yes, but he pressured the QB, and was always around the ball.
  3. Woods- he made a couple catches, while being hit, that most guys might drop. People point to Krupp, but this man is also essential for Goff, to keep the chains moving.
  4. Allen- big upgrade at Center. He played with anger in his eyes, and got downfield a few times in impressive ways.
  5. Kupp- He’s back, guys. So many clutch catches on third down. Goff seems to go to these guys in bunches.
  6. Johnson- Loved the play of all of our safeties, but I loved how active JJ was, and how willing he was to make tackles. (Unlike our pssy CBs. Those dudes need to grow a pair before New Orleans)
  7. Malcom Brown- Great second effort on many runs. He may be pushing Todd - not in effort- but in the fire in his belly.
  8. Gurley- He played great all day, and it was so nice to see his late production put the game away.
  9. Higbee- he made some big time plays, while the ink on his contract extension dries.
  10. Rapp- Great job by the rookie. Great players like this look like stars from the start. If he takes care of himself, he could be a Hall of Famer.
*The following players deserve more credit than they have been given:

  1. Hekker- his country -mile boots more than make up for the blocks- (I believe the first one was tipped as well) that is on the blocking scheme. This dude just moves field position in mighty ways.
  2. Cooks- people were down on him, but he caught a couple good balls, and drew a key PI call. As with many plays, he was open more, and our boy Goff needs to step up his field recognition.
  3. JoJo. I’ve given him crap, but he was solid in his ball handling, made a great athletic play on one punt return, and responded well after an early bad decision fielding a punt at the two yard line.
  4. Donald- Every time I Keyed on him he was hustling. Not worried a bit about his production. It was just a fluke game where he faded into the backdrop...I feel sorry for Drew Beees.
  5. Greg Zuerlein- yes he missed a fg. And kicked one out of bounds, but he booted 3 fgs. Including a 56 yarder that would have been good from 66, and consistently drills his kickoffs into the seats.
  6. Weddel- people are forgetting- before his injury- minor, I hope- he was all over the place, making plays.
The following players actually deserve some fan scrutiny for their production, or their effort:

  1. Talib- he looked lazy, often times
  2. Peters- growing tired of his act.
  3. Reynolds- haven’t heard it mentioned. He dropped 2 passes. Maybe Goff doesn’t look as bad if his hands weren’t made of jello.
  4. Our soft- underbelly- Hager? SJD? Brockers? Wade? Man, just figure it out.
  5. Goff. Had no vision. Some of his passes sailed like in last years Bears game. Come on man.

5 takeaways from the Rams' 30-27 victory over the Panthers

Goff: very rusty, but the game sealing throw to Higbee was a precision dart.

OL: good but not great, which is actually a pretty good sign. Everybody else is getting a pass with the understanding that they are gonna be better than what we saw, right? I mean seriously, HAVS got a penalty. Can you remember where you were the last time that happened?

Rapp: the writer loses some credibility here. Rapp's PT is unaffected by Weddle's. The plan is for both to be on the field at the same time. Hager comes out and Rapp goes in. Rapp has a different role that replaces the one played by barron.
...except Rapp will be better. He's a sure tackler and pretty good in coverage. He had a pretty good game for his opener.

Donald: we all know he starts slow and why his #s weren't significant--we watch the Rams every week. I am not currently worried.

The run game: this is what a McVay offense is all about. I was not thrilled to see the way Gurley started, but everything made sense in the end. He is a closer. He's too strong for a worn defense. Total rush yards tell the story.

STs: omg, what a nightmare! I truly cannot remember a worse game played by that unit...EVER! I don't even think I can recall every miscue without cliff notes.

All in all, the Rams came out expectedly rusty and because the panthers are better than the raiders, the Rams had to grit this one out. Considering what the worst plays and moments were of that game, I'm not yet concerned. After all, champions win on a bad day and the Rams do not lose to bad teams.

Edit:
Oops! I forgot to mention the return of Cooper Kupp. Great game and doing it early as if McVay wanted to make a statement. What a difference having him out there.

It isn't even about missed opportunities at this point. It is about blown opportunities.

DJ's fumble was a killer.

The backwards pass/fumble thing was a killer.

Cam's INT was a killer.

All three of these, paired with not being able to stop the run on defense, are why we lost.

We'll fix it and beat the poo out of the Bucs. We're a really good team that had a bad opening day.

How many people truthfully circled this as a W on their calendar? I have us right where we need to be and still on track to make it to the playoffs. No injuries and getting comfortable with our scheme this year. We'll be fine.

Just a few from a Panthers forum

SNF: Steelers at Patriots

Well...

It is 99% certainty the Pats are going to the Super Bowl again. They just look a cut above...annnddd that's without AB. It kinda sucks the fun out of the NFL when one team is this dominant, but it is what it is. I can seriously see them going undefeated with their schedule.

Tom Brady won’t play forever
I remember how nightmarish it was as a kid with Satan’s Friends having Steve Young on the bench and Montana starting - now that was f u c k e d up
The Pats have a guy named Stidham as backup

Los Angeles Rams at Carolina Panthers: Report card shows up and down Rams in Week 1

It was a gutsy win in Charlotte, but the LA Rams got the win and now the grades are in!

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at Carolina Panthers

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Without a preseason game for nearly every starter on the Los Angeles Rams, most fans were prepared for a sloppy week 1 matchup in Carolina and that’s exactly what was delivered. Getting their first win of the season in a 30-27 slugfest over the Carolina Panthers, the Rams can feel good going back home to face the New Orleans Saints in week 2. Right?

Here are the grades for your LA Rams:
Quarterback

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at Carolina Panthers

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY SportsC+

Our highly paid superstar QB, Jared Goff, was a bit rusty on Sunday. He’s never been great on the road and without a preseason, it was understandable that the timing of his throws would be a little off. That’s exactly what happened. With a QB rating of 69 (nice), Goff was 23/39 for 186 yards. He was late on a throw to WR Robert Woods that led to an interception and he missed on some easy passing attempts. However, Goff was able to move the offense with his security blanket, WR Cooper Kupp, and even threw a touchdown pass to his BFF, TE Tyler Higbee.

Running Back

Los Angeles Rams RB Malcolm Brown politely waves to the crowd after scoring a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, Sep. 8, 2019.

The game started in a way that made me assume that I’d be giving the running backs a failing grade, but then something strange happened... RB Malcolm Brown reminded us why he’s on the team. He’s a great blocker, yes, but he can also thrive in red zone situations. With 2 touchdowns off of 11 carries for 53 yards, Brown was a very valuable hand-cuff for RB Todd Gurley II, who actually turned in a solid performance once the game got rolling. Did he seem like his knee issues were behind him? Not at all. But his 25 yard run was a sight for sore eyes. I’ll take it.

Wide Receivers

The passing attack was quiet, but the pass catchers still proved that they are deep, fast, and sneaky good. WR Cooper Kupp started off the game as if he never injured his knee last season, and Woods was, well, he was Robert Woods. WR Brandin Cooks had a nice grab for 24 yards. These guys are just getting started.

Higbee, aka “Hygz,” is quickly becoming one of my favorite Rams. His blocking was solid and he was able to get into the end zone for a touchdown. Yeah, he didn’t dominate, but what can I say? I'm in the tank for the guy.

Offensive Line

NFL: Los Angeles Rams-Training Camp
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsC
The big beefy boys up front had a rough game, but ended up on a stronger note. C Brian Allen, in his first starting job, looked inconsistent and was man-handled at times. However, he was facing a very strong Panthers defensive line.

They did allow RB Christian McCaffrey to do this thing, running wild for 128 yards. However, DE Aaron Donald was a beast aaaas usual, setting up the EDGE rushers like Dante Fowler Jr. to get a sack. He was disruptive all game and was a big reason why the Panthers struggled to move the ball in the first half. DT Michael Brockers was also his reliable self as well, securing two solo tackles.

This was difficult to grade because ILB Cory Littleton played out of his mind, but the EDGE rushers were pretty ineffective. Did they get sacks? Sure. But were they gifts wrapped by the Panthers’ offensive line? You bet! Props to Littleton though; he balled out for sure.

Defensive Backs

S John Johnson III had another solid game to add to his resume, but veteran and new LA Ram S Eric Weddle had a rough one, getting a nasty laceration on his head that sent him into the concussion protocol. S Taylor Rapp looked fast and smart on the field, which was to be expected.

Special Teams

Woof. There are days and then there are days. P Johnny Hekker had a blocked punt, K Greg Zuerlein missed an easy field goal and had a kickoff go out of bounds. Coach John Fassel’s special team’s unit just looked... off.

Coaching

Los Angeles Rams v Carolina Panthers

Coach Sean McVay made some adjustments in the second half that really improved the run game and provide some much needed points when the game got tight. His use of Gurley seemed measured and smart.

Was this game ugly? Not really. It was just a bit rough around the edges. Nothing that can’t be cleaned up.
And they better do it quick because the Saints are coming to town.

Oline a C and Dline a B? Did this guy watch the game? I'd actually flip that. The Dline played like the Dline of old for the most part when it came to stopping the run. They would hold their ground and then give up a 30 yard play. Typical Rams Front 7 if you ask me. Pass rush was outstanding IMO so maybe that helps their case.
Oline played pretty well they gave Goff all day but Goff was seeing Ghost and holding on to the ball way too long. I'm pretty sure he had a very open WR on almost every throwing play, he just wasn't in sync. That will obviously work itself out. The run game started out slow but ended up doing very well in the 2nd half. Part of that was McVays gameplan. he's a stud.

Defensive backs got a B???? Did he see how many bad throws that Cam had to wide open WR's??? Good thing Cam sucks so bad, if they had an actual QB that was somewhat accurate we lose that game.

If you look at the scoreboard of Sunday’s game, you’d probably think the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers went back and forth in a close game for 60 minutes. That wasn’t exactly the case, but it certainly wasn’t an easy win for Sean McVay’s squad.
They beat the Panthers 30-27 on the road in Week 1, nearly blowing a 23-10 lead in the second half. The Panthers made it interesting with a late touchdown and onside kick attempt, but the Rams were able to close it out on the ground.

If you missed the game, which featured a handful of pivotal turnovers and two touchdowns by Malcolm Brown, watch the full highlight reel below.
