Rebuilding? Reloading? Rams at a crossroads entering the 2020 season

This team is built. They are not rebuilding. Last year was the result of a lot of key injuries and poor coaching by Kromer and Wade. Wade is gone and Kromer has basically been demoted as he was passed over for OC. They have real talent and depth across the board. Hell, even some of their PS guys are better than the starters on some teams. This team is somewhat like the Pats in that they are constantly evolving with their roster. Next year there will be a lot of turn over but IMO most of it will be dead weight like Whitworth and Havenstein and the media will cry and wring their hands not really understanding what is happening.

In order to afford that core of key vets, the Rams must keep churning the middle of the roster with young talent off their PS who will play and produce for a few years until they can't afford them. Guys like John Johnson and sometimes they will lose an impact player like Ebukam so they sign a waiver wire guy that looks like he can become the next SAM on the roster. But this is normal and in many ways a good thing. It's how you not only build a championship-caliber roster but build the franchise into a dynasty. This team has all the earmarks of a dynasty in the making with an uber-talented YOUNG roster.

Trade for Rosen

Rosen cleared waivers and has signed with the Buccaneers PS. The Buccaneers have 30-year-old veteran QBs Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin on their roster. (Griffin is their long-time #3 QB). Rosen goes there as the #4 QB on PS pay with the opportunity to win either the #3 or #2 job sometime in the future. Obviously Brady in the twilight of his career. It's a no risk move for the Buccaneers. It'll be tough for a #4 QB to impress the coaching staff.

Jadeveon Clowney looking for ‘market-setting money’

Looks like the Saints tried to pull some shady ass shit to get him.....

An inside look at wild backstory behind Saints' last-ditch effort to sign Jadeveon Clowney

Making a final push late Saturday to land star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the Saints got creative, attempting to pull off a move believed to be the first of its kind in NFL history – but couldn't get final clearance from the league.
The Saints were working with another team towards a unique sign-and-trade deal that would've maneuvered around salary cap constraints to bring the free-agent Clowney to New Orleans. But talks fell apart over the NFL's willingness to approve such a deal, and Clowney wound up agreeing to terms with the Tennessee Titans on a one-year deal late Saturday night.

According to sources informed of the talks, the Saints didn't feel they could compete financially with the Titans' offer – $12 million, plus $3 million in incentives – given budgetary reasons. So, they approached another team to find a workaround. (Sources didn't confirm the other team, which hereafter is referred to as "Team X", but it is believed to be the Cleveland Browns, who have ample cap space and a front office known for having a propensity for creativity, most memorably on display in their 2016 trade for quarterback Brock Osweiler.)

The sides discussed parameters of a deal in which Team X would've signed Clowney to a one-year, $15 million contract and paid him a $5 million signing bonus. Then, Team X would've immediately traded Clowney to the Saints, who would've sent Team X a second-round draft pick, as well as a player to take additional salary off New Orleans' books. The Saints would've paid Clowney's remaining $10 million salary.

Just one problem: The teams got word late Saturday the NFL was unlikely to approve such a deal.
Other teams have, in essence, paid cash for picks in the past, including the Browns, who agreed to take on Osweiler's $16 million guaranteed salary in a deal that netted them a second-round draft pick. Last year, the Dolphins paid Ryan Tannehill a $5 million signing bonus on a restructured contract to send him to the Titans. And Clowney himself received a $7 million signing bonus last August from the Texans to help complete a trade to Seattle.

But several executives from different NFL teams said they couldn't recall any other team executing such a deal involving a free agent who was literally only signed to trade him. One exec summed up the interpretation of the league's bylaws as: "Fundamentally, you can't trade cash."

The Saints have long been willing to convert large base salaries to signing bonuses or add voidable years to contracts to free up short-term cap space. But there is great uncertainty about the 2021 salary cap, given a projected multibillion-dollar revenue shortfall related to COVID-19 that could cause it to drop from $198.2 million per club in 2020 to as little as $175 million. Entering this weekend's cuts, the Saints had over $260 million in cap commitments for 2021, according to NFL Players Association records.
The Saints continued to try to rework their offer late into Saturday night, but without help, they couldn't match the Titans' offer. And after 5½ months on the free-agent market, Clowney decided to head to Tennessee instead.

Rob Havenstein happy to be back on field

There's a bit of irony to you saying this. Not about the negativity because you're generally not but... Just sayin'.

Regardless, I totally agree with you here.

I wouldn't harp on a poster for questioning one of our awful coaching staffs. If this were a Steve Loney OL, I would likely be right there with him. But this coaching staff has proven its worth. I think it's a bit silly to say that Kromer and Dickerson don't watch film because a poster disagrees with what they're doing.

Rams 2020 Cut Down Thread

I'm stoked that Anchrum made the cut. Our OG depth looks good, the question is the starters.
I agree fully with your assessment of the Rams OG depth.

Having a rookie OL'er like Tremayne Anchrum.... Kromer can have both over 6-6-Edwards(RT) & the over 35 inch armed Evans(LT) to concentrate fully on those two OT posts due to the past unhealthy & pass blocking deficiencies of Havenstein & advanced age of Whitworth. TA gives Kromer a real strong generally good all-around young blocker to groom once Noteboom moves left a few feet to start.

Kromer is betting big that Joseph Noteboom can be an upgrade over Austin Corbett & David Edwards @ LG. I mentioned it earlier this past week it might be that Andrew Whitworth wants JN by his right side over the other OG's who played there last season (Demby/Edwards). That was the initial 2019 plan last season but that early knee injury caused them to reset & rethink it enough to resign Whitworth to try a do-over of that 2019 plan with JN.

Having an RG like Austin Corbett who showed last season he was fairly competent in pass blocking something that his partner @ RT Hav is not. Hav was constantly beat silly with those quick inside pass rushes & having an AC instead of a Blythe/Demby/ Edwards trio showed signs that AC is very smart & quick in identifying those pass-rushing tricks by those smaller tweeners. Teaming AC with Hav could be a good tandem working together in the pass-blocking snaps. It was near impossible for the super short armed Blythe to assist Hav out on those inside pass rush.

The left side OL should be an excellent pass blocking duo lacking in the run blocking though. Protecting Goff's blindside has to be still high on the demands of McVay. He might be planning to utilize what Goff brings to an offense with his quick pin point passing arm & go heavy with those short to the medium passing routes now that he (McVay) has Goff surrounded with a boatload of sure-handed outstanding route runners available.

Keenan Allen signs 4 year extension

He won't be a Ram next year. We already drafted his replacement.

So you think that Ramsey will get paid but not Kupp ?
I really want us to keep him...i hope that you’re wrong.
When he’s healthy he’s a beast !

Allen is one hell of a receiver and he’s one of the most underrated WR so he deserved that contract imo, i find him really fun to watch even if he plays for the Chargers...

55 man roster, Rams Offensive Line Room (10 players) Projection

Can you currently ID the Reserve active game day Swing OT & Developmental Practice Squad Reserve LT?

As of this moment this is the Rams OL unit:

LT-Whitworth/ Evans
LG-Noteboom/ Shelton
OC-Blythe/ Allen
RG-Corbett/ Anchrum
RT-Havenstein/ Edwards
That looks about right but I think before the season's over Edwards will be at left guard and not Noteboom.

I'm not getting the Noteboom thing.
There's no way his knee is 100% ready for a full season and I really wouldn't even bother trying to develop him into a guard.

And I'm not sure why they flopped Corbett to RG.
I would have left Edwards there with Corbett at left guard.

But I trust Kromer's opinion on these moves.
He's done a lot more studying of them in person and on tape than I have. ;)

Sofi's turbulent story (LA Times)

Good article. One thing I found interesting was the admission that the initial reports during the owners meetings favoring the Chargers/Raiders proposal was false, and actually the opposite.

I never thought Carson was in play @OldSchool went to that sight several times and communicated nothing was going on, what I found amazing was that there were some people looking at the renderings that stated they preferred the Carson model, but I understand the emotions played a part.

Rams Transactions - Most Surprising Decisions?

I think Brycen Hopkins is probably secure being a 4th round pick... but... as a vibe thing... There wasn’t much with Hopkins.

Not sure if that means anything to watch.

Won’t surprise me (Actually, Nothing will surprise me too much today!) if Hopkins ends up on the Practice Squad but I would like to see him make the final roster. Sounds like it is kind of him vs Johnny Mundt (Unless, the Rams decide to keep both of them) for their final roster.
