About McVay’s intriguing “want explosive players in draft” comment...

we saw that in the Super Bowl - our offense was historically bad - likely the worst offensive performance in Super Bowl history, and while Belichick is a defensive genius, it's not like we were playing the 85 Bears D.

When your opponents know what you are going to do, pass or run, even an average defense will shut you down. And the TE "tell" Belichick discovered did just that.

McVay got schooled.

I’m pretty bitter about him dropping 2 TD passes in the super bowl that we lost 13-3.

Stahp with the dropped two TD's stuff. Go look at the plays again.

FYI Some Draft Tidbits from Sniffing Around

Absolutely love Derrick Baity? That's a strong statement. How would this guy know that? Baity posted below average on a lot of combine drills. He's got nice size and length. He's versatile. But, I don't get why anyone would be crazy over him. They are hosting Savage from Maryland, but he is a safety. I like that they are looking at McCoy and Davis. Online early May not be all that farfetched.

there is a thread for this btw

Check out my theory of current Ram drafting philosophy...

r: 471"]I'm sure he's asking for position players along with WP but they aren't watching nearly as much film as Snead. It's just too much to do. Those two are working hard coaching.

I'm not saying they're not involved but Snead is by far the lead here
???
Drafting John Johnson ?? I’d say Wade had a lot to do with that pick.
Trading back for Everett Snead.
Drafting Everett McVay

Noteboom ?? Kromer as well as Allen[/QUOTE]

Some questions about how coaches really felt about certain players have already been answered, huh?

Reference the Michael Brockers comments ................At the moment Brockers is our only proven starting NT.

It would be a very unwise decision to not have MB already preparing to start @ the Wade middle DL. Brockers does an outstanding job stopping the run, from lining up in front in- between the center & RG. The only other DL'er who can play the middle is 2nd season Sebastian Joseph-Day who is 6-4 315lbs. He has yet to play in a regular season gm. He did look solid in the 2018 pre season. When your two most well seasoned DL'ers are 28 yr old Brockers & 27 yr old Donald ....you know you have a very young & in-experienced DL.

I am expecting some big changes in the DL cadre for 2019 season. I believe we will see larger stronger & improved bodies from it. John Franklin-Myers, Sebastian Joseph-Myers, Morgan Fox & Justin Lawler should be in this group.

The rest of the Ram DL cadre is on the very light side of the norm:

Donald- 6-1 270's
Franklin-6-4 290
Smart 6-1 290
Morgan Fox 6-3 275
Justin Lawler 6-4 270

I would expect Snead to add a talented NT in the draft & one from free agency.

6 Inches of Snow; 30 MPH Winds; 0 degrees Tonight

It's hot, and humid. But it is where I come from too. It just lasts 5 months rather than 2-3.

And that is a small price to pay for having the rest of the year like this.
Oh I know thats why I want to move to S. FL for at least the winter. My post was the product of jealousy at our 30 degree difference in morning temps. But not your opening your windows in the morning to stave off flatulence derived methane asphyxiation!;)

Jared's girlfriend

I wasn't poking fun at anyones sexual orientation, i was making a facetious statement about a ridiculous notion that anyone would change their sexual preference to perform better at sports. Example: Micheal Sam being gay just so he doesnt get "weak legs".

Ill agree that our opinions dont have to meet each others, i just found it odd that my light comment offended you in a thread that is pretty much objectifying a woman based on her looks.

From now until the 2019 NFL Draft takes place, we hope to showcase as many prospects as possible and examine both their strengths and weaknesses. Most of these profiles will feature individuals that the Pittsburgh Steelers are likely to have an interest in, while a few others will be top-ranked players. If there is a player you would like us to analyze, let us know in the comments below.

#2 Zach Allen/DE Boston College – 6’4/3 280

The Good

– Thick build with elite level length (34 1/2 inch arms), looks like an NFL player
– Quick, efficient and nuanced hand use, really excels and advanced in that area of his game and helps him shed blocks as a pass rusher in the run game
– Powerful initial strike and proper hand placement, puts jolt into tackles on power moves and creates a push
– Above average athlete who moves well and has good change of direction skills
– Shows quick first step off the ball and capable of one-gapping, difficult to reach block in the run game
– Smart pass rusher, has plenty of ways to win and counters, reads tackle’s set and capable of attacking half man
– Able to bend the corner, bull to rip/dip is his best move, flattens and turns upfield at the junction point
– Strength at the point of attack against base blocks when he plays with correct technique
– Good effort player hungry for the football, finishes plays and gets the ball out
– Versatile, played both end spots and doesn’t appear to be one-hand dominant, made an impact on each, kicked inside on third down, has the quickness to beat guards along the interior
– Experience in a 3-4 and 4-3 scheme, college system has hybrid, played a little with his hand up and occasionally asked to cover back in coverage on flares/swings
– Smart player who bats balls down at the LOS when he can’t get to the quarterback
– Asset on special teams, on field goal team and capable of getting blocks
– Productive player who racked up good numbers

The Bad

– Will struggle against some power/gap schemes against the run, needs to keep shoulders square, eyes on the football, and will get turned out and washed
– Won’t have much success against double-teams maintaining his gap
– Occasionally loses his run fit
– Not an elite athlete
– Sometimes jumps the snap too early, gets overaggressive, and prone to going offsides
– Didn’t put up gaudy sack numbers in any one season

Bio

– Two-year starter for Boston College (26 in career)
– Career: 199 tackles (40.5 TFL), 16.5 TFL, 14 pass deflections, 2 INTs
– 2018: 61 tackles (15 TFL), 7 pass deflections, 6.5 sacks
– Recorded 100 tackles as a junior
– Single-season high of 6.5 sacks, had just four in 2017
– Named Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior in high school
– 33 career sacks in HS
– Also played basketball and named a National Scholar Athlete

Tape Breakdown

Allen is one of those players where you almost wished the Steelers had a glaring need along the defensive line. I will admit I don’t think he’s an ideal scheme fit in Pittsburgh, we’ll get to that, but he’s an excellent prospect I’m really excited to talk about.

The best thing I like about Allen is his hand use. Very advanced, very refined, very positive across the board. See it in run and pass. Watch him rip through this block by the left guard in the run game. Makes the tackle.

And his rip move here versus the right tackle, his favorite to win the edge against tackles. Forces the QB to climb and escape.

And how he sets up the Temple left tackle. Inside move and then works the outside. That’s attacking the linemen half-man. Attacking part of his body so it’s easier to get around him than trying to go down the middle.

When he gets his chance, the dude finishes plays. Check out the effort here. Pokes the ball out.

The issues I see didn’t pop up often. Like I wrote in the “Bad” section, his run defense needs some work. Can get stuck on blocks, get washed, moved around and lose his run fit a little easier than he should. Struggles more against power/gap schemes than zone. Against zone, he can flow, stay ahead of the linemen reaching, and use his hands to shed and rip the gap. Not as successful versus man schemes.

I did have to watch more of him than the typical prospect I study. While the tape I saw were very good, it came with a caveat. He faced some baaaaad, inexperienced tackles. Versus Temple, the right tackle he saw most of the time was a true freshman. Against Florida State, the right tackle – eventually benched – was a sophomore who hadn’t played the previous two years. But he showed success on both sides in each of those games and I saw enough of his tape overall to be encouraged by his play translating, rather than a senior just going around bullying some freshmen.

One draft guy on Twitter loosely compared him to J.J. Watt and I get that. A poor man’s version, no doubt, but I can see the similarities. Watt had an amazing three cone time, 6.88, and I think Allen can break the seven second mark. More realistically, because I doubt Allen ever becomes a 15+ sack guy like Watt, I see the next Carlos Dunlap. Good, not great pass rusher, but a very good player. Best fit is the strongside end in a 4-3 scheme. Complimentary pass rusher and well-rounded game. If this was 10 years ago and 3-4 teams like Pittsburgh played a lot of base and actual five technique, the latter rarely happens today, I’d like Allen in that scheme. But since the DEs wind up playing one and three tech, where they’re facing double-teams and have a lot to deal with against the run, Allen isn’t an ideal fit.

I’m not 100% sure if he’ll go round one but he should. In my book, at least.

Projection: Late Day 1-Early Day 2

Games Watched: vs Virginia Tech (2017), vs Temple, at NC State, at Florida State, vs Syracuse

Regular v Post Season performance

Early in last season officials were throwing flags for "roughing the passer" for little more than falling on top of the QB. I believe Wade had them dial back so as not to give teams that 1st down instead of a 4th and long due to a bogus call from rushing the QB. It played into Suh's lackadaisical regular season performance.

Suh was the same guy in the 2018 regular season that we saw in Miami. He wasn't interested in doing the work to anchor in vs the run until they neared the playoffs. The dude is a businessman. Best of luck to him somewhere else and sit back and get ready to enjoy a young NT addition who will leave it all on the field.

Pretty Happy/Excited About The Rams Offseason So Far!!!

IMHO, this offseason isn’t nearly as exciting as last year YET.

Last year was just insane. Peters, Talib, Suh, Cooks... amazing.

Weddle Bortles and Matthews don’t stack up to last year’s haul... yet.

We’ve also lost FOUR 10M-per-year guys in Saff, Joyner, Barron, and Suh. (Saff was the most painful to lose). While I agree with the Rams’ decision to not overspend to retain those four, still, that’s a lot of talent to lose.

I have all the faith in the world that McSnead will build a championship quality team in 2019, but there are still significant holes to fill. Rams really need to score big on their first 3 picks (1st, 3rd, 3rd) in this draft.
