The last 5 Rams Drafts - Graded in 2021

Last Five Rams Drafts Graded In 2021 (Conclusion)

Starting out, the mission of this series was to look back at the last five Rams drafts and see how it has gone for the selections. With 2020’s look back in the rear-view mirror, the series is now caught up to the present. Now at the end, a final look back at these five classes will reveal some big-picture takeaways. Here’s a look at the best pick, the worst pick, the best-value pick, the best draft class, and the worst draft class of the last five years. Finally, in the end, one last cumulative grade will be assigned that evaluates how the Rams have drafted overall during the last five years. This information may help predict how successful 2021’s draft turns out.

Last Five Rams Drafts Graded In 2021 (Conclusion)

Best Pick – Wide Receiver, Cooper Kupp – Round Three, Pick 69 Overall In 2017

Jared Goff came as a close second when deciding who got the selection. It came down to one fact: Cooper Kupp will be with the Rams for the majority of his career while Jared Goff is already gone. Also, the fact that Kupp is a third-round pick who played in the FCS also adds a value angle to this choice that Jared Goff simply does not.

After he was drafted, Kupp set the rookie record for receptions as a Ram and has earned 1,000 yards in three of his four seasons with the team. 2019 saw him catch 94 balls for 1,161 yards after a season-ending ACL injury in 2018, also proving that he can bounce back from big injuries better than many.

Best-Value Pick – Offensive Tackle, David Edwards – Round Five, Pick 169 Overall In 2019

This choice came down to safety Jordan Fuller and offensive tackle David Edwards. Fuller was picked in the sixth round, 199 overall in 2020 while Edwards was picked in the fifth round, 169 overall in 2019.

The tipping point for going with Edwards over Fuller was simply his extra year of proven work. With Fuller, 2021 could torpedo his appraised value while Edwards has a second season of data that shows him improving under an increasing workload. That said, if the safety Fuller goes out and has an equally productive or better 2021, he would likely take the cake on this selection as the best-value pick of the last five years.

Edwards earned a 61.1 PFF grade in 689 snaps in 2019. 2020 gave Edwards 1,006 snaps. He got better with a 70.3 PFF grade. In his two years of play, Edwards capitulated four sacks in about 1,700 snaps. He’s also seen work in every game since he was drafted. In other words, the fifth-round pick has blown away expectations.

Worst Pick – Defensive End, Ejuan Price – Round Seven, Pick 234 Overall In 2017

Basically, when narrowing down the selection for the worst pick, the method is simple: look for the shortest tenure in the NFL. Several players have bounced from the Rams quickly but most have gleaned interest from other teams, whether as a practice squad player or active roster participant.

Ejuan Price gets this (dis)honorable selection because he played in one game for the Rams in 2017 and never saw the field again. Put bluntly, the Rams should have sent the pick to a thrift shop where someone else could find a better use for it.

Best Draft Class: 2019

2019 was the best draft of the last five years for the Rams. It gave the team safety Taylor Rapp, running back Darrell Henderson, offensive tackle David Edwards, safety Nick Scott, and defensive lineman Greg Gaines. This single draft gave the Rams five good players that could be good enough to be with the team for the next half-decade or longer.

The next closest draft class is tentatively 2020 with 2016’s class in a position to overtake if 2020’s class has a bad season in 2021. 2016’s draft class had Jared Goff and drafting the quarterback that played in a Super Bowl automatically makes it a strong draft class.

Worst Draft Class: 2018

Put simply, 2018 turned out to be rough. No players from that year earned an “A”, there was one “B-” with Joe Noteboom and one “B+” with Sebastian Joseph-Day. Also, Brian Allen earned a “C+” but missed 2020 with injuries and he could easily go in the tank in 2021. Besides those three picks, the other seven picks earned a “C-” or lower. Overall, this was a pretty disappointing class thus far.

Last Five Rams Drafts, Graded

Have the Rams had a good five years of drafts? Just looking at their winning records over that time, one could guess that the answer would be “yes.” They’d be right. The Rams avoided having a disastrous draft and they had a couple of good ones in 2019 and 2020 with an average draft in 2017. 2018’s draft was disappointing but not laughably bad.

In the end, the Rams have drafted decently enough but they haven’t been perfect. That said, they didn’t have any catastrophes, either. Basically, the Rams kept the floor high but the ceiling low over the last five years. Keeping a floor high is a tough feat in the draft and the Rams should be applauded for avoiding total failure. However, no generational talents or league-leading players have not been selected by the Rams in the last five years.

2016-2020 Final Grade: C+
2017 had Kupp Everett and Johnson - not disappointing in the least imho.

Draft - First Priority: The Cases for CB, OL, EDGE and DL

Last year the Niners rushed for 3.3 and 3.4 YPC against us in two games.

On the flip side we only scored 16 and 13 points offensively in the two games. Both games we ran the ball well and both games we had time to pass for the most part.

I think the Packers game did show that we need a more diverse group of pass rushers, so I could see a draft pick or two go that way - but the only real success the Niners had against us last year was the horizontal pitch pass crap in the first game - for that I'd love an ILB with speed and, you know, talent.

But I fear that keeping all our ILB from last year might mean we ignore the position yet again.
Our defense did a good job vs SF last year you're right. But still I think the key to dominating those fucks lies at the LOS. Get tougher up front and you can stuff that run game when they check to it because it's a light box and it's a wasted down for them.

And I want that physicality for better playoff potency. The Packers did a number on us motioning Reeder out then running into a light box in the playoffs. I'll be surprised if the Rams don't prioritize that.

Rams named one of five teams with best chance to go 17-0 in 2021

Ya know, it wasnt all that long ago that the Rams would have been on a list of teams that could possibly go 0-16...
Thank god those days are behind us
#inmcvaywetrust

I'll be honest, and maybe it's because I was traumatized by those seasons, but until questions about the future of our O-line are answered and I have some faith in that unit going forward, I kind of always feel like those days are always one (knocking on wood) bad day away from being back.

I do trust in McVay, and not long ago I believed in Kromer... but it all feels so fragile.

2021 NFL Draft will be unlike any other

IMO the Rams have a huge advantage over any team that does not use analytics. The reason why the Rams don't need to attend workouts is they can get pretty much everything they need from a player's game film. After all it's not how a player tests it's how he plays.

Also, this draft won't be about drafting to fill starting roles but rotational-type players to develop into future starters. SCB is a part-time position as is a #3 RB/FB. When you look at the Rams, the more they seem to ignore a position of clear need then the more likely they have a targeted player. Some will immediately point to center, but they ignore that the Rams already drafted for that position and Brian Allen did show enough in 2019 to warrant further looks. So IMO that doesn't fit the criteria. SCB is another clear position of need but it's at best less than a 50% position as Morris will have multiple options just with current roster players.

I for one don't anticipate the Rams trading out of #57. I think they probably have a targeted player, probably edge to backstop Lewis (health) and Floyd (rotation). Because of the way the roster looks right now there really isn't any pressing need to trade down for more picks. Conversely, I could see them trading up for a targeted player. Right now if they were going to trade down it probably would be their #3 pick for another 4th round pick and perhaps a 5th round pick.

Positions I see as being targeted with only the edge player probably warranting a 2nd round pick. IMO if they trade out of 57 it's because the player or players targeted at that point are off the board.

Edge, RB/FB, SCB, LS

I must disagree with your no-trade down position.

I is my opinion that Snead will be straining to make modest trade downs out of at least 57 and 88 in order to take full advantage of the depth plateau through round 4 in this particular draft.

An extra couple of picks gained before the end of the 4th round could be VERRRRRY beneficial.

Andrew Whitworth was willing to play guard if Rams traded for Trent Williams last year

Well stated TRam!!

I have questions about the truth of it all. In whole The Rams offensive line is better than it has been in the past.
—Sullivan being released & 2019 was A Joke in terms of Mcvay thinking outside the box.

—It’s called growing pains, depth & injuries.Saying why The Rams lost to GREEN BAY was on Edwards injury ??
Gurleys injury in 2019 ??

Tell me about CJ Anderson ?
Tell me about the Sullivan hold in the SuperBowl, which was his last game as a Ram.
Tell me about Aaron Donald’s last game as a Ram & say he either has a Temper problem or he is selfish. He injury was one thing, but that Personal Foul lead to putting The Game on a injured Jared Goff.

Brian Allen’s injury has been apart of Sullivan being missed. He was still having issues late in 2020.Why Mcvay didn’t let Allen& Noteboom play in the preseason was crazy.

NFC West 2021 free agency grades: Rams get high mark for adding Matthew Stafford, Cardinals take playoff step

This is worth watching. I suspect their draft will be heavy on the oline.

If not... the water temperature goes up on that situation.

I will pray for them to pick a QB in the second round lol. But they only have three total picks with one being in the 7th round so they aren't getting shit unless they absolutely nail that 2nd rounder.

What is the Rams’ plan at inside linebacker for 2021?

Good prospects but I think Bolton and Davis ... and maybe Moses ... would cost the Rams the #57 pick.

The Rams just don’t have much draft capital.

If Davis is at 57 I would take him immediately. IMO he's a first round value and would boost both edges as well as our run defense on early downs.

But there's a lot of players I like in that range man so it's gonna be tough. We could be looking at some really fine OTs, CBs, OLBs so whatever guy is the top name on the board just take him.

How good was the LA Rams offensive line in 2020?

Rams said, literally said, that because of training camp restrictions last year and lack of snaps, they gave most of them to starters. Wasn't much of a chance for players to show what they can do. The exception: Jordan Fuller. Why? Rapp was injured during camp so the snaps went to him.

You could say that Cam got a bunch of reps too but the intention was always to bring him in to be the starter at RB.

Last year was a redshirt year, it may not mean much in the long run but if you're looking for a reason for optimism on the lines and at WR/TE then you can reasonably say that there's some guys who didn't get the chance to show what they got.

Rams have invested heavily in data analytics each year

You can measure it from the video. It’s filmed at 120Hz I believe so that takes each frame to 1/120th of a second. Between that and the various cameras used to mitigate parallax errors, it allows for a very accurate measure for things like distance actually run, top speed, acceleration, ball flight and so much more.

So they use both NextGen Stats as well as other means of sifting deep data. The Rams are VERY progressive in this regard which hopefully will show up with an excellent draft class this year.

I think 2020 draft class is going to be special.Could be one of the best Rams drafts ever. Adding the udrfa.

Memento's Final (Unless Things Go South) 2021 Mock Draft.

Trading the team's second best OLineman would be a mistake, IMO. Plus, I have my doubts that they'd get a 3rd rounder for Havenstein when they can pick up a cheaper alternative in a deep OT draft class.

Given the limited access to players, I'm beginning to wonder if teams are going to willing to give up top 100 choices instead of taking more dart throws in this draft.

But, if not, I just noticed that the Seahawks select one spot ahead of the Rams in the 2nd round and only have 2 other selections in the entire draft. They might be desperate enough to take far less to acquire more selections.

Just out of curiosity, have you considered making a no-trade mock or one with fewer trades?

I honestly believe that Edwards is better than Havenstein. Havenstein is the second-most experienced, definitely a solid right tackle, but I feel that we need picks more. And I figure that the Titans, being a veteran team with Super Bowl aspirations, so long as Henry remains healthy, would trade a third.

And yes, both of the middle ones are fair points.

I have with other drafts, but we simply don't have enough draft picks in this one. I fully expect us to trade down for more picks at some point; we need people on rookie contracts, we have a fair few holes to fill, and it's a good draft to trade down in.
