Never gets old

The ref just kind of whipping his hat into his midsection then quickly fixing his mistake on live tv is always what kills me when watching this video lmao. But such a great, clean hit. Peyton Manning should have gotten a flag for hanging Sanders out to dry.

Former Rams running back Jim Bertelsen dies at 71

If you're referring to the fumble on the RAMS second offensive play of the game, that was McCutcheon that got stripped. After Hadl got picked on the first snap. Nightmare start that they seemed on the verge of overcoming when Steve Preece tried to play a deep throw as though he were fielding a punt.

You're right in that game the Rams had three turnovers, McCutcheon (Fumble), Hadl (Fumble) & Hadl (interception) the game Bertelsen fumbled was the regular season game in October of that year.

I think the Rams are hoping for one more year with this offensive line

Reality is those 6th rounders won't even have top 51 contracts and the 5th rounder is nearly a wash if he even counts.
That's correct. Spotrac has a nice analysis of the impact once the rookies sign.

It ill probably be the five players taken in rounds 2-4 that will replace the current five contracts ranked 47-51 for cap purposes; and the net impact should be approximately an additional $1.2M hit to the cap

Rank the Draft

No way I take Atwell where the Rams did, even I wanted him. I would have gone defense first with somebody like ossai at 57. That’s more heat on the DL/edge—where we lost 3 significant players (2 starters).

I’m ok with a LB if it will solidify the middle for a few seasons, but OL (meinerz?) were there with our next pick before we traded it.

I’m ok with the rest of the draft, especially the next 3 picks of BB3, Rochell, and Harris. I think those guys will work out just fine.

Am I the Only One Who Thinks Van Jefferson Will be Special?

If you go back to what Mcvay said in December about Van Jefferson then you can see the confidence on the coaches side of it.Then he starts to get more playing time.Van Jefferson against Green Bay showed such a veteran presence about him. He was no longer a rookie. The hook & ladder with Cam Akers for 2Points was a thing of beauty.
Josh Reynolds missing the pass right in his hands basically cost The Rams a chance on the road to win.Van Jefferson looks the ball into his hands, makes sure he knows where he is on the field.I saw 2 replays get over turned into catches. His knowledge of the game is special.
Reynolds is gone & those young players were brought in show Van Jefferson does not need to play special teams(Kupp as well) on coverage. The last thing I wanted to see last year was for Van to get hurt out there. He made plays, but that all about talent & hustle. You can’t have him giving up his body. That is not the player he is. —Mcvay held Van Jefferson under wraps in 2020.Josh Reynolds was in there in hope The Rams could get a Good Comp pick & preserve Jefferson.I know he was pissed & frustrated at times.Especially when Reynolds missed catches or a blocking assignment.
I actually think after watching the Green Bay game Van Jefferson will be a #1/2 WR.Hard call as of right now though to give out numbers of catches.I’ll say he has over 65 in 2021.
That’s my opinion
I honestly believe it’s coming but not sure if it will be 21 or 22

Well, it’s mercifully over...

Why??? Jags are said to have nailed this draft... I r confused...
I believe this is actually very common both from the action (new Leadership letting scouts go, from the prior regime) and the timing (post-Draft).

New Leadership and Front Office (like Jacksonville) often want to bring in their own people. Nothing unusual about that. Getting assistant coaches in ASAP is important. Scouting is different.

Much of the field work and information gathering by the Scouting Department is done by January but the team analysis, pre-draft analysis and final decision-making by the Front Office remains to be done. It would be unproductive to let scouts go in January/February when the new Front Office comes in. By keeping them around, the new Leadership gets the benefit of their in-season-work.

I believe the contracts of most scouts are written to end after the NFL drafts.

It also makes common sense. If JAX let go of these scouts in January and February, they would be free to immediately join another organization; and give that team the benefit of the analysis and work they did while working and getting paid by the Jaguars.

Rams Signing OL Alaric Jackson

Probably the main reason the Rams didn’t pull the trigger on another OL. They wanted a speed merchant and a LB so bad that they felt they had to take them early and early for the Rams is the late 2nd and 3rd rounds. By that time, they obviously thought Jackson had as much chance at the roster as those still available.
Agree. We get caught up in rounds a player is taken in like a 5th is a much better prospect than a 7th, when in reality players ranked between 175 and 300 may not be much different at all. Maybe certain cases there talented guys that get downgraded for off the field issues or medicals, but Jackson carried 4th & 5th round grades if you went by some of "the experts". Just shows that there are guys that could be a late 5th or undrafted abd it just comes down to scheme fits or if a coach really likes a player etc.. that differentiates him from a player with similar skill set/ ability.

Same likey holds true between players ranked 25-45 and maybe players 50-80... There will be platues and they won't be cleany differentiated by round numbers.

The deeper in the draft you go the bigger those groupings get.

Chandler Brewer Often Overlooked

You are right, and my observations date back to the 4 pre-season games of 2019, and while Evans, Edwards, Demby & Brewer received the bulk of the OG/OT snaps, some naturally played better than others. I have never made a claim that Brewer is anything more than what he showed us during those games, although I did talk him up based on what I witnessed, ... now he's missed an entire season in 2020 due to Covid, so whether that impacts his future, it's too early to tell. Still, if Brewer bites the dust this off-season, i'll be happy to eat all the crow you guys can feed me.
If anyone wants to know who my long shot offensive lineman at Center was for 2020, just look to my 2020 mock where I had Corbett penciled in a year before his name started popping up at Center this year, and just like this year, I took some heat for it.

Well just to be clear. You wanted a Center Quinn & a OT.Quinn went late in the 3rd & The Rams could have traded back & still drafted him.Denver got the other Center QBERRY?

—So now I understand you like & have liked Corbett at Center.I know I had a debate about him, which I didn’t think was true.Just as Mcvay stated he can cross train.Still think he was the 3rd string Center last season.

Obviously your don’t like Allen,Noteboom, & Evans?
Not putting post into your sayings, just wondering why
all your Brewer love.

Chandler fought cancer played well in the 2019 preseason. He made The Rams roster in 2019 .I saw him take 3 real snaps at the end of 2019 & looked lost.Evans was by far the better player.Brewer sat out 2020,which was the best thing for him & The Rams.

IMO -‘it was DUMB to think
Offensive Lineman!! Quinn was my number 2 guy if The Rams went Center. Landon Dickerson because he was the perfect Redshirt,so I believe I was spot on when Les Snead addressed that.
The Rams keep eight & have 11.Will play 15 ? I guess your roster is
& has been different than mine.Anchrum to me will get cut along with Coleman. That’s different than anyone posting, but shows the depth I was talking about.
Mcvay & Carberry have there work cut out for them. What are your 8? Does Brewer make The Rams ? I think he will make it over Anchrum.

Back up offense lineman?

Okay, I will play.

The Rams enjoyed unusual health in 17 and 18, but not so much in 19 and the loss of Saffold was significant. The line was good in 20 but not as good as the stats show because McVay contracted the offense to paper over the line's weaknesses. Noteboom is a good backup but unless he develops Saffold-like core strength, he's not the long term answer. Sullivan was heady but he physically broke down and Allen/Blythe didn't upgrade what has been a weakness in the McVay era. Corbett was a cheap and effective fill-in but not my choice for long term success. Edwards was a steal and though Havenstein has to be schemed because speed rushers abuse him, he's a key cog in the running game. Battling through injury in 19 made him look less than he is so he picked up some bad habits technique-wise along the way. I expect Havs to be a Pro Bowl level performer next year.

In short, we need two interior maulers and a developmental LT. So Ram, your focus years ago and into this year may not seem relevant to others, but it is to me. However, the post about girlfriends kinda makes you look crazy. Just sayin...

Leon, I think your post draft insight was very creative & extremely funny.
You have good connections. Havenstien was a player I thought had trade value & a big contract.Once the dirt clears he really is a team leader & core Offensive Lineman. His contract going into 2022 will be Ram Friendly. He is 1 of 3 starters signed for 2022 ? Whitworth might have signed a 3 year, but think there was an option? Not a contract numbers guy. Just somewhat recall him resigning last year 2020.

Your Draft Day Favorites

Sorry for breaking the rules.

SELELCTIONS LIKED
Bobby Brown III - Looks like a potential stud in the middle of defense. He may finally provide the team an interior lineman that can better capitalize on Aaron Donald's being double teamed.

Robert Rochell - Small school talent capable of giving Jalen Ramsey a run for his money athletically. I like the idea of Ramsey taking him under his wing to teach him.

Ben Skowronek - I haven't done an in-depth study, but in the games that I've watched, Matthew Stafford seems to play better when there is a big, physical target capable of going up and making contested catches. That's this kid's game.

Chris Garrett -Division II or no, 48.5 tackles for loss, 36.5 sacks and 15 forced fumbles in 28 games is outstanding. Love the value at selection #252.

SELECTIONS UNDERSTOOD

Tutu Atwell - Creed Humphrey? Joseph Ossai? Aaron Robinson? That's who I expected. But, the offense desperately needed more speed and Atwell has plenty of it. So much so, he should draw attention from opposing defenses, opening up things for his teammates when he isn't making the play himself.

Jacob Harris - I was hoping for the Western Michigan OT Jaylon Moore, but perhaps the Rams are a team that prefer their OTs meet the 34" minimum arm length requirement. So 141 picks into the draft, I understand the team taking a flier on a raw athlete with his height, weight, and speed numbers. And espeically if he's considered a strong special teams player as it keeps him active while he hones his craft.

SELECTION DISLIKED

Ernest Jones - I've read about his intelligence, leadership, run defense, and toughness. He's been called the heart of the South Carolina defense. It all sounds good. But, last year 7 of 10 opponents scored 31, 38, 52, 48, 59, 41, 45 points. And this with a so-called stud CB in Horn on the roster, too. I know they can't do it alone, so I watched 5 games. From what I saw, this kid looked like an undersized (230 lbs) 2 down run stuffer at best. He really struggles changing direction. It doesn' t take much for him to be blocked out of the play. He looked like a soft blitzer and he labored to get to the edges due to a lack of speed. He'll hustle and improve his tackle numbers via the assisted route, but I just didn't see anything that suggested he might be better than Kiser or Reeder.

MEH

Ernest Brown IV - Eric Banks, Michael Hoecht, Marquise Copeland, Jonah Williams. Competition is great, but I fell for the hype. I figured this was a 4 man battle royale for 1 or 2 spots. I haven't spent much time watching Brown IV, but I guess what bothers me the most about this selection is that the nation's top return man in CB Avery Williams and what I believe to be the draft's best FB/H-Back in Ben Mason went just a few spots later. Both could have had a HUGE role on special teams while also contributing at the listed roster positions.

James Funk - I get it. It's a 7th round pick and this kid is a potential core special teams guy. I liked the other two 7th rounders so I'm meh on this one. Why? I was really hoping that the Rams pulled the trigger on the Grambling State interior lineman Dave Moore who took some reps at center during the Senior Bowl. 330 lbs. Long arms. Nasty. Methinks he would have been a nice get to develop.

Help with a potential Rams project

Congrats man... the wife and I just closed on a new house yesterday.

I'm going to put a badass pool table in my party palace (calling it that instead of a man cave). I'm gonna get felt on the table with the LA logo. Your oculus lamp sounds very cool though... please keep us updated.

BTW.... I'm getting a stripper pole put in too. No shit LOL. The previous owner's wife was a ballroom dancer and he had a giant room built on for her just for that. There's already a shit ton of wild lights and a fucking mirrored spinning disco ball in there! The stripper pole will look very cool in there next to the bar and pool table. I gotta see this oculus light once you do it... I may have to have one too!!!!

I’ll look forward to the invite when it’s officially opened, I’ll conga over from Blighty for it!!

2021 LA Rams Hindsight Draft - You're the GM

I didn't spend any time this year on the draft. I always appreciate members that get into the draft and post about the many players available including their favorites. It's always a great way to catch up on players. This thread is always interesting too.

I liked last year's draft. Akers proved to be a great pick. Jefferson showed some good signs and Lewis can become a monster that I think was worth the risk. A little puzzling that they didn't go for ILber and OC last year.

This year they went for the ILber similar to what they have but, maybe a little better. I guess it's to find that speed hard-hitting player that can go sideline to sideline and cover late in round two. Hope he can become a solid starter soon. They still didn't draft an OC. They are being consistent.

I remember the thread about the Rams lacking a big jump ball pass catcher. I didn't see it as a big need for either this year. Higbee and Hopkins add some height. Funny how they drafted a small fast WR early on and big WR/TE types later on getting speed and height. I guess the Rams thought they needed both more speed and height for the near future.

We all know the draft is a crapshoot. The Rams to my dismay at times have traded early-round picks and spent lots of money to get top-quality players. It seems to have worked out. Whether we agree or not the Rams always seem to draft with conviction and a plan. At the least, they went for some good special teamers that they need. They seem to target a lot of future needs with possible benefits this year.

Pick #252 - Rams select LB Chris Garrett

Here he is in the 2021 Hula Bowl, he's in RED #35. They play him at both ends. Good strength for his frame, tenacious, will need to work on the big OTs using gravity against him when he rips the shoulder (gets smothered to the ground in the game quite a few times) but he gets the edge a lot and he's got a lot of threat to him. Caveat of course is that this is lower competition level but I really like his game. Worth a shot late that's for sure.

2021 NFL DRAFT SNAP GRADES

What's funny about that list is that most of our bad grades seem to come back to the Atwell pick - but Kiper had him as one of the best best available right before we picked, and obviously the Rams had him rated highly. We don't know what other NFL teams had him rated as, but it could have been a late 2nd/early 3rd for most teams.
I think Kiper's board most closely resembled the Rams' board. He had also mocked Jones to us. No surprise that we were like his 4th highest grade overall.
