Coverage Stats Show Flaws in L.A. Rams Defense

PFF again shows their lack of understanding of the NFL. What the fuck is "perfectly covered drop backs?" If a team disguises their coverage and shifts at the snap, PFF will downgrade them. Dudes, PFF is a fucked up when it comes to evaluating anything. Their metrics don't work for NFL football. Maybe they work at the high school level but not in the NFL.

Go by how many throws are PD, INT, throwaways, and what is the average length of time a QB holds the ball. and adjust all that to the average distance the pass is thrown in the air, which would be a better measurement of a defense. If you really want to get simplistic then just go by completion percentages and yardage given up per game.

PFF is so ignorant of the game they don't understand it isn't how pretty it looks but how effective it is. Why don't they simply ask all the starting QBs which defenses are hardest the throw against?

Yeah, I hate PFF because people think what they say actually means something. Steve's dad knew more than PFF because he obviously understood the game.

Yeah hopefully when he does return we feel him out there immediately. But year two so he should be ready to go once that six weeks is over.

I'm looking forward to watching Hoecht as well in preseason. He has a little rush ability to him which is nice with those interior types. Preseason for me is going to be about the DL, secondary, and TE. Lot of sorting to go with those groups it's gonna be a fun build up to the season. :thumbsup1:

I think teams with veteran defenses can be misleading vs the run during the regular season. Those types tend to get serious when the chips are down and play balls out, leaving it all on the field and all of a sudden you see what they can do.

Stopping the run is a key for sure. No defense has any sort of swag when they're getting run on. Getting run on in today's NFL is how you get 40+ hung on your ass in a given week because all these QBs can hit a WR when play action is working.

What's funny is McVay has been prioritizing run defense for years now. Since the Super Bowl loss he's been adding that element and it all came together last year. Though that said his defenses have trended well vs the run...

The Rams announced today that Martz, who was expected to be pursued as a head coach by other NFL teams, would become the team's head coach whenever Dick Vermeil decides to step down.

Vermeil himself initiated the move, in which Martz will sign a two-year contract extension to remain as the team's offensive coordinator. Vermeil, 63, said he intends to quit coaching when his contract runs out in two years. Other sources in the organization said Vermeil could retire sooner if the Rams win the Super Bowl this year or next.

"We promised to offer Mike the head coaching job, if it's available," team president John Shaw said today. He added that the prospect of losing Martz, 48, the architect of the league's No. 1 offense, to another team seeking a head coach "was a serious factor in what's taken place here. No one in this organization wants to lose Mike Martz."

But Shaw also said: "As far as I'm concerned, Dick can coach as long as he wants."

Martz's extension will prevent owners such as Jerry Jones in Dallas and Robert Kraft in New England from speaking with Martz about coaching vacancies. Green Bay, New Orleans and the New York Jets also have openings.

"I'm excited about the opportunity," said Martz, the Redskins' quarterback coach in 1997-98 before taking the Rams job last season. "It's from Dick's intervention that this opportunity could work out for me. I'd just like to say this is where I want to be. I don't want to be the head coach anywhere else but St. Louis."

They showed that on MLB network last night. Carpenter, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Ruth. Not Mantle. Not Mattingly. His numbers in all games played are ridiculous. 30 games played. 27 for 75 (.360). 22 runs, 31 Rbi. 4 doubles, 13 homers, 70 total bases, 12 walks. A .473 OB% and a .933 Slug% for an OPS of 1.406. Certainly we know he won't keep those numbers for the rest of the season but Boone is riding him for as long as he can. Other guys will pick him up when he starts to come back to reality. Stanton is having an excellent season. Hicks started to come into form before fouling a ball off his shin. I thought Donaldson was coming around but I'm beginning to think the best we can expect there is he gets hot for a week or two. Which is fine so long as he continues to be the best third baseman in the A.L. LeMahieu has heated up (.321 in July; 9 for his last 25.... .360). And Judge is Judge.

Stafford: A Year Under My Belt

I think the risk taking will always be part of his game. I know some people don't like the brett farve gunslinger comparison, but I think it is the closest comparison out there. The big difference between them though is Stafford studies and practices seriously, Farve not so much. So while it looks the same sometimes it is based on a knowledge not just physical ability.

We will see more consistency this year. More TD passes less interceptions and a dominating offense and as long as Stafford can step on the field we will see a QB that can make up for key injuries, like he did in the SB. If the D holds up, the Rams should have quite a few 10 or more point victories this year. Even with the tough schedule.

Eh, this stuff about Bettis dogging or sucking or pouting or not wanting to fit into the offense doesn’t jive with me.

As a matter of fact it reminds me of Gurley’s last season under Fisher. You’re a young beast RB who is on a shit offense and running behind crap in a bad scheme that doesn’t fit your strengths.

What if the Rams had shipped Gurley away after 2016?
Yikes.

They should have continued to build the offense around him(Bettis) but nah. Dummies, and they all got fired anyway.
