Athletic Football Show Podcast NFC West Preview

First of all, this podcast is a great listen when you want to know more about football in general. Second, amazing preview of NFC West and of the Rams in particular with a few nuggets you probably didn't know (like losing our trainer to Vikings and sports science guys to Eagles, thoughts on new coaches, etc...) and the future of the offense and defense.

Rams are 3rd team previewed after 9ers and Hawks.

I’m tired of Odell

So where does OBJ rank among WR divas all time? My all time #1 diva would be Terrell Owens. Is OBJ that bad? Hell my current #1 diva would be Stephon Diggs. Talked his way outta Minnesota and is gonna talk his way out of Buffalo. Who are some others. Michael Irvin? Andre Reed? Antonio Brown? He's more a crimimal than diva. Steve Smith? Randy Moss? Tyreek Hill? Brandon Marshall was a huge diva. DeSean Jackson! Keyshawn Johnson! Andre Rison! 3 of the biggest divas all time! Terry Glenn. Joe Horn. I wouldn't rank OBJ above many of those guys and more, as far as being a diva. There's a long history of WR divas but one thing they all have in common is they were good. Then you have guys like Ike, Marvin Harrison, Calvin Johnson, etc. who did their talking on the field, not in the media.
Nobody’s a bigger diva than Michael Thomas of the Saints.

Big Whit Is A Great Interview

He seems to be around quite a bit already, and seems to enjoy mentoring the young guys, so which I think is great. He also seems like a natural calling games, very knowledgeable about a lot. He can make a lot more money on tv and still keep his hands in whenever he feels like it.
I feel like he has his choice right now, he'd be great as both a coach and a commentator

Bruss to RT? OL starting 5 as of today Aug 6?

If our somewhat revamped o-line gets blown up tonight against the Chargers then I want to see Dalton Risner in horns, immediately. He is more than serviceable and would probably be our 2nd best o-lineman. In fact, we still got around $12M in cap space so I don't understand why we are waiting on this as he could probably be had for about $5M. I would rather not see Stafford forced into retirement from an injury due to the continued neglect of protecting him.

Who won the trade?

The Lions turned those picks into trades that resulted in:

Traded with up from 32 with the Vikings for #s 12 and 46

6 Ifeti Melifonwu S (Rams 3rd )- looking like a bust
9 Jameson Williams WR (Vikings 1st)-looking like a bust
93 Josh Pascal DL (Vikings 2nd) - played ten games as a rookie

They traded #6 back to Arizona for 12, 34, 168. They turned them into

26 Jamyr Gibbs - considering RB value it may not be wise.
87 Sam Laporta - TE, tbd

168 was traded to the Cardinals and they got 92:

98 Broderick Martin - DL tbd

It seems like their 2023 haul has more potential to pan out so imo Gibbs, Laporta, Martin and Goff.

Assuming they pan out. If the Rams had to trade Goff and his contract along with a great RB in Gibbs ( that they’d never resign) a pass catching TE in Laporta and a starting DT in Martin, they’d do it in a heartbeat. Stafford is worth much more than that.
Thumbs up for your research. For those keeping track I listed their jersey # in Honolulu blue for reference.

1st preseason game vs Giants:
Gibbs had a decent run for about six and a catch for 18. Announcers mentioned him as a likely starter. Fans are also liking him.
Martin, primarily a run stuffer who needs work on his pass rush, had 1 tackle.
Williams looked average; dropped a near TD catch and also had a 1-hander for a 2pt conversion. Saw him throw a decent downfield block on 1 play.

Of course the Lions picked up Teddy B to back up Goff so at least he has a decent vet behind him.

We still won the trade so far, just interesting to see what the Lions do with these. I like Holmes, Goff and Coach Campbell and would like to see the Lions at least make the playoffs again this year. When/if they get there I'll be cheering when they play well and groaning if they don't same as last year.

What is the secret of the Rams’ (recent) success?

My $0.02 on McVay:

Dude is a "Thought Leader".

Some folks have decent ideas, but they don't have a gaggle of admirers/followers. Some folks have an impressive following but are idiots (check the news for the poster child for this).

McVay is both.

He decides to buck tradition, and not play starters AT ALL in the preseason. Balls the size of blimps for the youngest head coach in history to put his neck on the line like this. Pundits everywhere make fun of him. Now, most of the league has followed his lead, and only coaches who fart dust refuse to get in line. I even heard local radio in Seattle (who always crap all over the Rams) admit he was the innovator in this regard. This list of innovations grow each season.

Assuming he fights the burnout over the years, IMO, he will be known as the best there ever was.

Alaska

When I was a teenager, my Grandfather had me film that drive from the passenger seat with his big ass video camera. We narrated it together along the drive. We actually watched that damn thing more than once years later. I cannot imagine anyone else making it through 5 minutes of that marathon video though. LOL

It's a beautiful slow ride down if you make it during the daytime as long as it's not raining. The water views from the bridges gets more and more amazing the further down the Keys you go. You won't see any of the beautiful homes really because they are not near the main road... but the water views are like nowhere else in the world.
I would definitely choose a sunny day to make that drive

Royce Freeman is our guy

Well sure - however the numbers lineup. There’s certain players you don’t put on the waiverwire though.I think The Rams might roll with only 2 LBers?

It’s a numbers game in September & injuries will be big.
—Example - do you see Warren McClendon play any downs or making The Rams 53 this season ? Like I’m saying , The Rams will redshirt him on the pup list.

The Offensive Line is going to be pretty skinny if you’re talking Roster 53(Bruss protected). That makes 7 Offensive Lineman & Noteboom & or A Jackson will be the swing guy. Add Shelton to the mix at Center guard.
Yeah, if it's about 24' they will carry whoever they think will be more help down the road vs an immediate 1 yr rental or a guy who they don't see as much upside in.

Rams Coverage rates from last year

Whatever they were set-up to do last year, sure did not work.

I don't know if where they are going to get that good-to-great pass rush, or speed on the back-end.

I am all for being more aggressive.

Anyway, I hope it works-out!
What I didn't like about Morris defense last year is pinpointed to 3 games

Tampa Bay - we played an agressive defense for 3 quarters and then went to soft zone in the 4th qtr and lost because of it

Arizona - second game - no way McCoy should have gone up and done the field with his 5 yard passes all game

New Orleans - same thing

Should have played more aggressive in the two games and not change up the defense in the Tampa Game

Those 3 games were the difference of possibly have 8 wins after the Raider game and maybe having a chance at making the playoffs and basically giving up and going 5 12.
