Don’t like these types of rational. Same rational doesn’t hold up with “ well why did 32 teams pass over Puka 4 times?” “ well why wasn’t Aaron Donald the first pick of the draft then”

It is what it is without creating crazy hypotheticals.

You're right. That wasn't necessary. Just the frustration born of nuance being missed in this type of media.

I don't think Speights is a given by any means. I just know Reeder ain't it. So it is painful to watch my team continue to bet on a backup player when they may have a starter behind him.

I’m positive he would contribute to a significant difference. Along with another CB (perhaps DWill back).

Agree 100%.

AD took 4 games before he got the starting nod. So it might Speights a bit more but LB outside of RB and maybe DL (NT) is one of the easier transitions to the NFL.

IF the Rams put Speights in at linebacker, opposing teams may target him in coverage. Perhaps that is the reason why he hasn't seen the field. We all saw him stuff dudes in the preseason but McVay has seen him in practice and in scrimmages against other teams, and he may have trouble in coverage. Just a thought.

People forget that Jones didn't start until something like week 12 or 13 of his rookie year if I recall correctly.

The Rams played 10 games before their Bye Week in 2021; and 7 games after the Bye.

Jones started 7 games as a rookie; and, I believe, they were the final seven games (post-Bye).

Quick observation, unrelated to the topic ... this is a post By me responding to a post By you. Bye, Bye for now.
 
Well, there yah have it and we now know why. McVay doesn't feel Hummel & Speights are ready for the big time...yet!

Hopefully the plan is to make the move over the bye week. It would be nice to see a ILB stop a RB dead in his tracks and knock him backwards at least 4 or 5 times a game. Reeder and Rozeboom get dragged more often than not, I want a consistent heat seeker knocking dudes down.

Are they worse? 75% of pass plays I see Rozeboom starting from the middle of the field peeking at the QB instead of covering the receiver crossing his face.

Is McVay insinuating Hummel and Speights do that at least 80% of the time?

So, I'm with you. McVay has his reasons, but at this point what's the worst that will happen if Hummel and Speights get the call? The Rams lose a game? So what? Let's go down trying!

I take his full comments on that question as simply that there is a huge difference between preseason vs regular season.

Just think about it. A rookie can flash playing in a simple dumbed down base defense going up against a vanilla dumbed down offense, versus executing a defensive gameplan against an offense that is actually following their own ganeplan. Especially an offensive playcaller who will target a young LB and exploit his inexperience and hesitancy against a complex offense.

I think McVay is full of it. Either he is gas lighting us or he is serious about them not being good. But then McVay losing to the cards and bears is inexcusable getting pwned by newer coaches is embarassing. Maybe he should just play Hummels and Speights.

Coaches want to know guys will line up correctly and know their job on a given down.
Same reason Corum is not playing.....pass blocking, not running.
I think Hummel is easily the best in coverage and Id really like to see both backups get reps starting this week and if they perform, and I think they would to a degree, get more going forward.
