Joey O makes his pick for the most underrated player on the Rams, and it’s someone who didn’t even get on the field outside of special teams last year.

Two weeks ago, I looked at who might be the most overrated member of the 2019 Los Angeles Rams. Today, I’m tabbing my most underrated Ram for this season.

And it’s a wild one.

ILB Micah Kiser.

He isn’t a player that immediately comes to mind. During his rookie season last year after being selected with the 147th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Kiser was primarily a special teams player logging 63% of the snaps under Special Teams Coordinator John Fassell. And this sounds like an silly stat, but the dude played 16 games — he was healthy. After years of hoping LB Mark Barron’s ankles wouldn’t fall off, this is key!

But Kiser isn’t just a special teams guy. He’s a tackler. It’s his jam. Back in his college days at Virginia, Kiser led the ACC in tackles for three straight seasons, becoming the second player to ever do so.

For those skeptical that Kiser can make the leap to effective starter at inside linebacker, one only needs to look at the guy right next to him. ILB Cory Littleton thrived with the special teams unit before getting the nod to be a starter on defense. With the departure of Barron, Kiser is going to fit into that position with the major expectation of helping improve the Rams’ subpar run defense. Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips said some positive things about Kiser in January:

“I think for where he is in his career and where we need him, it’ll be in those first and second-down plays for sure. Cory is such a good coverage guy and then we’ve got a lot of safeties that can come in and help us on third downs, so I think his main role certainly right now will be first and second down as a base defensive player.”

What makes Kiser underrated is that he didn’t play one single defensive snap last season and he’s a former fifth-round pick. Kiser is a smart player that relies on his instincts to find the guy with the football and drive him into the grass. The knock on Kiser is that he’s not a world class athlete and will most likely struggle covering tight ends across the middle. However, the defensive coaching staff seems like they know how to use him this season.

I can always get behind a player that has a great technique at his position; a dude with a natural feel for the game.

With the presumed mentorship of LB Clay Matthews, Kiser has the tools to put it all together this season while redefining the identity of the run defense for the LA Rams.

I agree with your assessment on Kiser but I would also put Obo and SJD in this conversation.

How in the hell does the author of that article think an unproven player can be underrated? Jesus man cue the circus music.

If you want underrated you gotta go with guys who have actually been producing but have been mostly overlooked. I'd go with Jared Goff. Young QB in year 3 who has numbers that rival the best ever thus far but all he's heard from the media is snide remarks and dissembling of the how and why he earned that success.

Beat me to it. Couldn't agree more.

I'm gonna say Goff. I still feel like even Ram fans and the experts aren't sure about #16. People have that first 7 games in his rookie season stuck in their heads. I don't even count that season....Fisher sucked. Being a Rams fan for 46 years, I understand how we just expect the worst every year. I truely believe it's our time now, And Goff will be known as one of the greatest Rams quarterbacks ever. I see him winning us at least 3 Super Bowls during his career. GO RAMS!!

Cooper Kupp....yes many people rave about him, but he is soooooooooo needed by our offense, he is still underrated by comparison. We have always heard that no one person is irreplaceable...Kupp comes the closest

Agree that Goff is underrated. Couldn't really say about Kiser, yet.

I think Marcus Peters is a good candidate. Too easy to look at a bad stretch in a new defense (that was potentially sparked by an injury) and say it's what the guy is. But he's smarter and more calculating than people give him credit for, on top of just having great instincts and the level of insane competitive stubborness you want in your CBs. Some folks have pointed to his improvement over the last part of the season, and I don't want to spend time digging up those stats, but I expect him to have a great second year, and thrive in a defense that he's more comfortable with (and with the added familiarity Wade has that will put Peters in better positions for his skillset). He is very talented, and I think he shows that this year.

Change the title to most undiscovered, and I like the choice of Kiser. Dying to see what this guy can add to the Rams defense. And, he has possibility of a great nickname too!

How can a guy who has never played a down at his stated position be under rated, i.e. guys like SJD, Kiser and Ogbo??? Overrated perhaps with unrealistic expectations.

I agree that Goff who is an elite QB isn't treated as one by the ignorant media (see Mike Florio) who usually have an alternative agenda. I just tune it out like I'm sure the players do as well. The worst thing that can happen to an untested young player is to buy into his own hype. The NFL is a prove it league, with each year a new group of busts added to the trail of bodies.

Okoronkwo doesn't have elite speed for an edge rusher, actually he has average speed. What he does have is a very good explosive first step that he needs to exploit. It worked in the NCAA but the OT's he will be playing against are far better than those guys. He's got good hand work and a good spin move and good strength. That would seem to indicate he could have success on the edge but hardly a guarantee he will.

SJD has had a year to develop and improve. The question is, has he? He came in with average speed for the position, but like Ogbo a good first step. But he was never able to translate that into success so he was benched and expected to improve his inability to get off blocks, which is related to strength and technique. They gave him a year and are giving him reps with the 1's to show he has. Watching the limited samples of his play from the joint practices, I didn't see him get penetration (although he might have off camera), but I did see him get stood up by an OG and unable to get off the block. He still has time to improve his game, and hopefully he will, but he's no where near where he needs to be right now from what I've seen.

Kiser, came in testing decently in his timed long speed. But his collegiate play film would seem to show him not playing to his speed. It also showed that he was a liability in coverage in college. Yes he is running with the 1's but so is Bryce Hager. Hager is appearing to get reps in coverage...more so than Kiser, at least to this point. Like the other two he's had a full year to develop so it's time to step up. Has he? Like the others the jury is still out.

The pre-season games are where these 3 and guys like Gaines and Demby need to earn their chops. They need to show they deserve to start. That's why even with the fact the starters won't be playing, the pre-season is going to be very interesting. I could care less who wins or loses, it's how well or not the young guys play that will be of interest to me.

Peters

He receives, and at times deserves, his share of criticism... But, he’s one we underrate at times.

As long as he’s healthy... we don’t have to worry about this spot.

Underrated.

Ogbo needs to be healthy long enough to get on the field. I'd love to see it, but right now it seems like the dude was born under a ladder with a black cat sitting on the top rung.

My pick: Cory Littleton

Jeff Fisher.

Under Mr. Fishers leadership the Rams drafted:

Aaron Donald - #1 player in the NFL.
Johnny Hekker - Who had the big fake punt in the NFC Championship.
Jared Goff - Who made the big throws to put the Rams in position.
Greg the Leg - Who made the winning 57 yd FG to send the Rams to the Super Bowl!!

Thank you Fish. :rimshot:
