When you heard the news Kennedy had been shot.

Me I was in Miss Bergman's 8th grade Social Studies class, the Principle just turned the intercom on tuned to a radio station ,I remember they knocked on her door a few minutes earlier to give her the news ,she appeared shaken. Bad day,39 years later on same date a much better day,Thor born

I was in the cosmos of fate, waiting to be become a twinkle in my parents' eyes. I don't remember if they had radios or television there.

;)

But yeah, it was definitely a tragic day. Kennedy could've been a truly great president...

I'm only 46 so that explains my whereabouts.

Both my parents have told me about being in school when the news broke. One of those things that you never forget.

Gotta wonder what the US would have been like,I doubt we'd have escalated the Viet Nam War, maybe no "Great Society" ,gotta wonder if our space program ( based largely in LBJ's home state) would have been as aggressive.
Many say JFK wouldn't have won re-election,dunno.
My family was devastated ,we were Dems. and Catholics so he was an icon to us.
I was glad when the funeral was over ,the networks went into wall to wall coverage, the anchors droned on and on about minute details repetitively.

I was 1 you old fuck.:heh:

But yeah. JFK would likely be considered ultra conservative by today's standards. And he no doubt would have been re-elected. What Kennedy doesn't?

Ultra conservative? I have a hard time believing that.

I too, wasn't born yet... However JFK has always been an interesting president to me. I do wonder how much his high approval ratings would have gone down if he had indeed served a full 2 terms (because I do think without a doubt he would have been reelected), very inspiring man though. Such a shame he couldn't live to see man land on the moon after pushing for it.

Wasn't born.

BUT I did visit the JFK Memorial last month...was interesting. Never understood all the conspiracies tho.

I wasn't born either.

I am fascinated by the conspiracies, however.

wasnt even a twinkle yet...hell I wasnt even thought of yet. Mom and Dad just had my oldest sister

Actually his approval ratings were not good at that time and re-election was not a foregone conclusion, he definitely would be seen as conservative by today's standards .

I don't see how he would be seen as a conservative when he was extremely pro large government and Keynesian economics. He lead to a new wave of left leaning voters. Especially today with the neocons.

As i am only 29 years old, i was not part of that generation, but i imagine it is on par with us and 9/11.

Actually, it was his assassination that created those effects. One might even say JFK was a martyr for those causes.

I was 3. But I do remember Robert Kennedy's assassination. Now that was a game changer. Does anyone think Nixon would have won over JFK's brother?

Ah yes. Juxtapositioning... ain't it great. If you were to put his political positions and views on taxation, foreign affairs, etc side by side with today's politicians, he would almost without question be considered conservative and virtually by definition, a neocon himself. BTW - what exactly is your definition of "neocon"? Do you realize that JFK was referred to as a neocon for his foreign policy back in the day? Do you realize that historically, "neoconservatives" were almost all Democrats? Do you realize he spoke AGAINST big government during his campaign? He also was an advocate of lowering taxes to increase demand for US products. He was NOT pro large government. He was however a Keynesian thinker. The two absolutely do not go hand in hand.

Okay, this is going down the wrong path. I understand JFK's politics, I have studied them quite a bit, and no by today's standards he would not be a conservative. He was a centerist on the political spectrum and liberal, boarderline radical in some areas, on the attitudinal chart.

I understand why those on the right would want to think he would be on their side, just as those on the left want Regan on theirs. Fact is Regan likely would run into issues with the right due to certain aspects (like healthcare) but he certainly wouldn't fit on the left with his stance on ecomics and many others. Just as JFK certainly would not be accepted on the right today. For what its worth, Obama has a very "Republican" stance on foreign policy too, we all know hes not accepted.

And thats my last post on the matter. Anything else will need to be in private.

FWIW bc if you don't WANT THIS to go "down the wrong path" why are you masking posts that infer people on the right "want" to have things a certain way, make your claims and then say it's the last word.

My dad was a Dem pol. in that day and time, the Dem party was the home of states rights at that time,
Reagan won because that segment of the Dem party switched allegiance. It was the home of conservatism and was co-opted by leftists MANY of whom in current power structure were Viet Nam war protesters .
I'll admit people become confused because we have political parties and the parties themselves aren't ideological purists so you get compromises that make ideologues label people things they aren't, but by today's standards Kennedy would not be a true liberal.
You may have studied books written by people who wanted you to think a certain way, but I lived it,saw it as it was happening without being subjected to the lenses of reconstructionists.
BTW my dad was invited to LBJ's inauguration.

The sad fact is when anyone gains control of an entity be it a Boy Scout troop, corporation, football message board , the institutional desire to grow takes over their focus and they just "grow it" their way, so all pols become "big government".

I was only 4 but I have some vivid memories of that day, probably my earliest. I was at home with my mom and remember the TV coverage. What I remember the most is my older sister, who was 11 at the time, hysterically claiming LBJ was responsible for the assassination. She held that belief for the rest of her life. Now that I look back on that time I wonder how did an 11 yr old get such a strong opinion on such a matter the same day it happened? I find that curious as hell.

We must be the same age Thor, I was in the eighth grade too. 1st afternoon class they came and told us he had died. It was a sad day, I watched Jack Ruby kill Oswald on live TV that next Sunday morning. If it had not happened who knows where we would be today. If JFK got reelected maybe we don't get Nixon in 68. No Nixon then no Carter, no Carter then no Reagan. Wow this makes my head spin.

Wow - Did that sound condescending! Sorry about that Blue. Should have probably read that through a couple times before posting. I just get a little irritated at the way people throw around the term neocon these days. I've been a student of history for many years. Instead of reading novels, I read books on history - mainly US history. I'm knida sick that way.:cray: Anyway, I'll let it go here. Just wanted to apologize in front of the group for coming off that way.
