What is wrong with the offense?

Too plodding, overall.. not explosive. That's the single biggest issue I see.. how many big plays are they getting? Looks like close to bottom third in pass plays of +20 and +40.
SECOND TO LAST IN EXPLOSIVE RUSHES... So... that's relevant to the Kyren conversation.

I don't understand why they haven't found ways to get Xavier Smith involved in offense.

Speed will be a priority for the offense in the offseason, imo.
 
Teams are playing 8 to 9 players within 7-10 yards of the los against the Rams. There is nothing in the middle. We don't play the short flats hardly ever. Can't remember running any traditional screens this year. The jet sweep is dead. Only way to break it open is deep out routes and some shots to the posts/flags.

We can only hope the Rams offense are playing possum somehow. Sandbagging with this roster would be crazy work, so that's really not a possibility. Gotta hope they can catch some lightning in a bottle to be competitive in the playoffs!

I prefer the Rams play Stafford in the gun. Williams and Corum seem fine taking handoffs in the gun. Stafford seems to be more comfortable in it.

Also I'd like to see McVay spread the defense out a bit more vice going so many condensed formations. Reason being I think our OL can win vs a light box consistently. As long as Noteboom isn't part of the starting 5.

Play action works better from under center.

Stafford just has to stop locking in on his buddy Kupp and Puka and spread the ball around more.

They told the announcers that Robinson separated better than all the WRs. With all the attention given to Kupp and Puka, Robinson should be balling out now.

Disagree. Rams can run the ball just fine from the gun. Williams has no problem with that, and if the opposing ILBs want to ignore the handoff they can do so at their own risk.

Stafford will elevate his play if the line gives him reasonable protections. He's been beat to hell this year behind this line and doesn't trust that he can get through his reads. I think the plan is to get him the time and he'll get through his reads just fine.

Play action absolutely works better from under center. Not sure that is debatable. Stafford doesn't like playing under center, so McVay appeases him. That in itself is a limitation in the offense.

It's a much easier read for the ILBs from the gun.

That's the old saying but Williams, again, is extremely effective from the gun. Also the QB can read the field when he's not turning his back, which means he can read and hand it off if the backers drop.

I would prefer that as well it just comes at a cost in the gm over the over the course of the gm. At the end of the day it's what's Stafford has shown he's most comfortable in so imo that's what they should do. I much rather have the rbs adjust vs Stafford.

This. Now uf Stafford was a mobile qb then it would be a different discussion.
 
Whatever the problem is, our playoff opponents have not seen how McVay will adjust to the last 3 weeks of the film they will be studying. He has changed shit up coming off the bye in the past.

It was obvious the Cards were consistently stacking the box with 8-9 defenders. How McVay/Staff couldn’t take advantage of that is perplexing but some of it has to do with lack of WR speed and the ineptitude of TEs (other than a little spark of hope from Higs).

I’m hoping Xavier Smith can develop into a contributor on O.

He’s taken his special teams roll seriously.. I always root for those guys.

He’s got real speed.

I think we have the largest gap between ceiling and floor on offense than any team in the NFL..You truly don’t know what offense will show up. It’s never been this unpredictable since McVay has been here. We are lacking home run hitters. Puka can be but besides him it’s really all just too methodical. Kyren has the lowest YPC of any top back in the league. Play variety and diverse play calling hinges on the health of the OLine. Thats when this offense can be lethal. Can we do that for 4 straight in the Big Dance??

Last year Kyren was near the top in YPC at 5.0. It's all about the OL.
 
I heard someone mention that we are 31st out of 32 in big gain runs, only ahead of the abysmal Raiders. Kyren will get you the hard yards but little else for 98% of the time. Hoping Corum can contribute to that more in the future. He had long runs his whole college career.

Bland play calling,easy runs up the middle. They play like they have the last 3 games, it'll be s short playoff run
