Did you know that the capybara - the biggest rodent in the world and a native to all South American countries except for Chile - will usually let humans pet them and hand feed them? Their meat is also one of the few that is allowed by the Vatican during the Holy Week, as it is considered a fish.

Did you know that the redback spider of Australia had its venom mixed with snakes and pine tree gum to form a poison that Indigenous Australians used to coat their spears? There is also a cricket team named after these deadly spiders, as well as a sculpture in one of Australia's big things (notable tourist traps).

Did you know that the average IQ for men and women are the same: 100 (the mean, mode, median is 100 with a standard deviation of 15 for you statistics types)

But the extremes of IQ tend to be populated by men. So that means the dumbest of the dumb and the smartest of the smart tend to be men. These findings have been found across all cultures/countries that it was researched in and across many different IQ tests

Also the people of extreme IQs (smartest of smart, dumbest of dumb) tend to be left handed

Did you know...........

That Bonnie Parker , of the legendary Bonnie and Clyde , was actually married to someone else the whole time she rode with Clyde Barrow

Bonnie died wearing a wedding ring—but it wasn’t Clyde’s. Six days before turning 16, Bonnie married high school classmate Roy Thornton. The marriage disintegrated within months, and Bonnie never again saw her husband after he was imprisoned for robbery in 1929. Soon after, Bonnie met Clyde, and although the pair fell in love, she never divorced Thornton. On the day Bonnie and Clyde were killed in 1934, she was still wearing Thornton’s wedding ring and had a tattoo on the inside of her right thigh with two interconnected hearts labeled “Bonnie” and “Roy.”

Apex predators are the top predators in a food chain, the ones that are only threatened by humans and not other animals in the natural ecosystem. Like an orca would be an apex predator in the Arctic/Antarctic regions, a tiger would be an apex predator in a jungle (or Siberia), an alligator is an apex predator in the Floridian swamps, a full-grown great white shark is an apex predator in the oceans, etc.

Maybe not anymore. Pythons may be the apex in the Florida Everglades now. They like to eat alligators.

Pythons don't count because they are not natural to the Floridian ecosystem. They're released by pet owners into the wild, which is an unnatural shift in an ecosystem. Those things don't belong in the Everglades. Never have, never will. Much like wild boars don't belong in any ecosystem that we have.

Tell that to the alligators! Pythons are going to wipe out that ecosystem.

Exactly. Much like the wild boars, the pythons need to be exterminated as well. Neither of them are native species, and they must be killed for the alligators and other animals to survive.

They are trying but are fighting a losing battle. The pythons are mating and growing too fast.

As are the fucking boars. Poor gators...

Anyway, back on topic with another animal DYK!

Did you know that a single sloth can be an actual ecosystem for moths, beetles, cockroaches, ciliates, fungi, and algae? Also, they are known to eat, sleep, and give birth on rainforest tree branches and are known to remain there after death.

This thread is awesome especially @bluecoconuts space stuff. Keep it coming.

Did you know that the Southern Right Whale has what are believed to be the largest testicles in the animal kingdom weighing in at 500kg/1,100lbs each. Those are some big plums!

Hydrodynamics dictates that they're internal so you won't see these things dragging along the sea bed.

Did you know that is about 793,831 average human bowel movements.........

It's a problem here in Florida that is VERY easy to solve. But isn't being taken care of because bureaucrats are DUMB. The state is spending tons of money to monitor and catch them.

Solve the problem by telling all the crackers they get 50 bucks for each head they bring in. There won't be a single python left by the end of summer.

Did you know that the earth has an unusually large metal center created when it was impacted by a smaller planet which may have also formed the moon? This fortuitous spinning center provides the magnetic field that allows our atmosphere to exist.

THIS is one of the reasons I don't believe intelligent life is as common in the universe as one might hope. Another is that planet sized catastrophes are very common in systems without massive planets like Pluto and Neptune to eat up and deflect asteroids. Add in that the planet needs to be in a goldilocks zone, have water, be the right size, and on and on.

Did you know the US has a semi-autonomous destroyer?

It can be run with as little as 41 crew. Once in battle mode, it can move within range of the enemy, acquire targets, and engage them with no input from humans. It can fight multiple targets at once in the air, land, and sea. It is equipped with both rail guns and weaponized lasers. It also makes it's own fuel from seawater.

I'm not sure intelligent life is all that common here on earth.
