This O uses PA as much as any in the league and when you stop running you hurt your passing game.

70 passes to 10 runs is crazy.

I wished I shared your optimism.....Nothing made sense in the Tampa game and we are about to find out how good our young Head Coach truly is,...Can he right the ship and maybe they just need to stick with the run more, regardless.

Goff at this point is a turnover machine and some of that is on him, not all, but some. The Offensive Line continues to have issues and this time the defense was not there to safe us.

In Seattle, the Rams must establish the run, in order, for the PA to work, but what I see against Seattle is being exposed even more, however, this will give them time to make several changes before their next game.

I think Goff has about 10 turnovers this year, or close to it.

I totally agree on establishing the run. Without PA this offense throttles itself.

I used to say that Martz when down by more than one TD would begin calling plays like a desperate blackjack player that is increasing his bets and taking more risk to make up for losses. It's a good analogy for McVay yesterday. Tampa was just pinning their ears back and attacking. Maybe mix in some draw plays.

I feel like McVay lost the feel for the game and panicked.

For right now I'm looking at it as a bad game for out D. They overlooked The Bucks and paid for it. Bad day for Wade too scheme wise. I guess we will know the answer on Thursday.

I’m surprised in a way by McVays refusal to to a two TE set versus a seven man front.
I get why in one way. The pass yards should be there if they are rushing six or seven. Or if they drop but are playing with two LBs lined up in the A gaps.
You are not going to run against that with success and if your pass blocking 5 with 5 or 5 with 6 most times the rush is getting there.
A two TE set could give an assist to the running game and still plenty of passes out of it.
Saw NO run this same stacked front quite a bit versus Dallas last night. The result? 45 yards rushing and 10 points for the Cowboys.
This is probably the new defensive trend.

What you're saying is true a 2 TE set could be what changes a DC's mind about using the 6-1.

Are you saying hat the Saints did this to Dallas..........I didn't watch the game.

It would be interesting if it became a trend.
 
I don't get why some people are so against Goff.

Sure he had some really bad passes but he also had some damn good passes.

That pass for the TD to Everett was a fantastic throw.

To me it was a tale of two cities for Goff

He was either extremely terrible or extremely good with hardly anything in between.

The majority of the extremely terrible was due to Goff getting crushed by Tampa's pass rush other than the one interception and two overthrown passes that could easily have been TDs and maybe a couple other throws.

I will say that when Goff sees a wide open receiver that he sometimes gets over excited and overthrows the receiver. However, some of that could also be attributed to him getting crushed over and over and the one time he has time, he rushes the throw from over excitement at seeing a wide open receiver going for a TD.

I am hoping with experience that he will calm himself down on those throws.

But overall he had a decent game having to deal with that pass rush all game. He really only had 3 to 6 bad throws that was all on him. I will have to rewatch the game on the all 22 to see how many bad throws that was 100% his fault.

The only QB in the league that is under 30 that could have done better than Goff in this game imho is Mahomes.

I am far from upset 3 - 1 is great. I don't think we are as good as last year and McVay does concern me more than I would like but we are a good team.

We are a playoff team and the O.L should get better. We had our concerns coming into the season and hopefully time together will help.

Dline play has been sporadic I am hoping for consistency.


Onto next week

You know it's funny... When down 21 to zip early on I wasn't too worried, rather I was expecting the offense to get it together and the defense to start making stops. Story of the game overall was that the defense had no answer for the Bucs' offense.

So your point on the run is valid. That said going forward there is a problem with our ability to run the ball in order to force defenses to play us honestly. And it all does go back to the OL and they need to be better. But our RBs also need to be better. Last week there were a lot of yards left on the field that last year would have been big plays. So while the OL is mostly to blame here the backs and the QB aren't above it.

I'm not too down in the dumps though. Instead I'm interested in seeing what our team is made of. Receiving a big @$$ whoopin at home right before you play two huge division games is setting the stage for all that.

That's just it. Teams are going to keep doing that alignment until someone makes them pay for it. A 2 TE set could be the way to attack it, especially with what the Rams have at the position. The mere presence of both of them gives them more beef for run blocking and threatens the D with a TE in the middle of the field in very short order. It's at least worth a try, because 11 personnel, with no running game and long developing patterns isn't working.

In another thread I suggested 4 and 5 wide sets too.

What I don't get is why Phillips continued to play a soft zone the entire game.

We were getting reamed by Godwin all game and we continued to play 7 to 10 yards off him the entire game. We should have changed up our defense to a defense where the corners played within 5 yards of the receiver with secondary help from Weddle or Johnson on Peters man since he has a tendency to once in awhile get faked out of his shoes by the QB.

In addition, Philips hardly ever blitzed in this game. Winston had all day to throw to find an open receiver.

When we had given 28 points in the first half but were down by only 11, I felt we had this game in the bag since Philips is a master at making second half adjustments and our offense was starting to come alive. Our offense continued to come alive in the second half but Philips did not make any adjustments that I could see. Terrible game by Philips yesterday. When we score 40 points, we should win easy against a team like Tampa Bay. No excuses for that pile of drivel by the defense.
