Said it during the game, you don't know when Quinn heard the whistle and based on your video it so close there's no way he just stops. Plus, it's not like it was that violent...Just a stupid call IMO.

Seems the whistle went off as he's picking him up to throw him back. Just seems like one of those that should of just been left alone.

That's not the rule regarding picking a player up and throwing him to the ground. That's the illegal part.

If you watch the reaction of the players who were right there and saw it you can see they know the rule and that what Quinn did is a penalty. Even the announce said "a little extra zeal perhaps".

I don't think it's a big deal to tackle that way, meaning what Quinn did, and I don't think that type of play should be a penalty. But it is. I'm not for guys getting picked up and slammed on their head, which is pretty much why the rule about picking a player up and throwing them down is in the rulebooks, but what Quinn did wasn't that. However he did pick the guy up and throw him down and that will get a flag.

From memory, a couple of years ago, that's how I remember the explanation from a "rules expert" explaining why it's a penalty.

If this wasn't a penalty think about how many times in each game you'd see guys getting picked up and thrown down.

The Seahawks practice and use a type of tackle that halfway lifts the ballcarrier up. They copied it from rugby evidently.

Here's the thing: Quinn should know, in the context of how the rules are enforced in the NFL now, that throwing him down like that will more than often result in a penalty. Is that a BS call? Probably, but it's one of the areas on which lines are being drawn. Up to the players to keep a cool head when the situation unfolds. I think Quinn got a bit carried away.

Even worse.

Maybe we can just ask these guys to please get on the ground if they wouldn't mind being so kind. That way we don't have to expend any energy in this man-sport.

Honestly though, I think this is just a judgement call by the referees. If there was no suspicion of forward progress, and the whistle wasn't involved, I don't think this is a penalty at all. Guys get tackled like that all the time.

Yeah I've seen RB's and WR get tackled like that countless times before... it was a mistake by the official.

I'm honestly not against a rule being enforced against tackling like that.. I've just never seen it called before.

Luckily it didn't cost us anything.

Funny commentary but... if you think Fournette, as tough an SOB as he is, was going to break from Quinn on that play, well... we'll just have to disagree.

I wasn't surprised by the call but I still think it is BS. If he would have pile drived the runner - yeah. But you have to play through the whistle and it is a sport where you send messages. You don't just hold the guy right there because he is just as likely to work through the whistle to get more yards and was still trying to do just that. If you stand up and hold him there, he gains leverage and can carry you forward. No harm no foul is the standard rule. It's the same reason I hate these little ticky tack calls when a QB has his helmet brushed by a defender's hand. Quit trying to look like you are fixing a problem that doesn't exist. I'm fine with protecting the players. This didn't do that.

I think most of us agree with that, and it's puzzling why Quinn would do it because he isn't a dumb sack of hammers and knows it's likely to draw a flag.

Thankfully nothing came out of that since the Rams came up with an INT.

If Fornette was a guy like Tavon that went down real easy, then yes. But if Quinn doesn't make certain that Fornette is down then he just keeps churning his legs and bounces out of the grasp for a gain.

That's why I said it was a penalty.

To me, there's no way Fournette escapes Quinn's grasp... had Quinn just held on for maybe 2 more seconds, the whistle blows and there's no penalty, period.

That's all it would have taken... two seconds more... and I don't think Fournette would have made any more forward progress in those two seconds.

Just my $.02
