I dont care what they use to be. If someone wins the triathlon then plays chess professionally are they an athlete because they play chess? Chess players are not athelets and gas men in pit crews are not athletes just because they are a gas man in a pit crew.

We're seeing, right now, people trying to make football a safer, less intentionally injurious sport. You can't do that to boxing or MMA. The intent is to injure. The whole point is to injure or simulate injury. That's why they're called martial arts. Intended for war, where being a gentleman is an absolute no-go.

I guess you could say, "How do you do, sir (or ma'am, as the case may be)?" right before you shoot someone, but I feel that would be ineffective.

I roll BJJ and I disagree. The goal is to use a grappling move to force a submission. Some of the best moves that got me were downright elegant. The intent is to force a submission and NOT injure.

Otherwise, most oma platas would end up in dislocated shoulders and arm bars in hyperextended elbows.

As for the triangle, I used to think of it as a choke that required tons of torque. Nope. A black belt and I were rolling and he showed me that a little bit of thigh squeeze and...lights out.

Essentially, if someone loses track of a wrist, it’s just sweet to use proper technique to flip the hips, get the calf over the neck and...squeeze.

One can get injured doing martial arts (Krav Maga comes to mind), but even in competition, the intent is not to injure. Oh, and simply striking isn’t intent to injure any more than tackling is.

So, based on my experience, I would have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, I guess Carl Lewis wasn't an athlete either? I mean all he did was run in between some lines. I guess I'm getting confused as to what the criteria is for a sport and an athlete. I mean those pit crew members have to be in shape, have to be quick, strong, and fast. They have to train non stop because they are competing against competitors that are doing the same thing to beat each other by tenths of seconds so the team can score the most points for a championship. It involves training, strategy, performing within a set of defined rules to finish first.
 
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the crickets are still chirping. There has been no Suh sighting this morning. :sleep:

If you're in a points match, sure. But in an actual MMA fight? The purpose (going back to its origin) is to immobilized an opponent, whether thats a stoppage from submission or injury.
 
What kind of dumbass team offers a deal to any player only to decide, 2 days later, that he doesn’t fit the long term plan?

I’m not buying that as the reason the jets rescinded. Maybe they could see Suh was gonna reject and, like a jilted boyfriend, decided to take their offer off the table to make it look like they dumped him and not the other way round.

Dolphins defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh continues to narrow down his list of prospective new employers. (Associated Press)

The math in the Ndamukong Suh sweepstakes took a turn in the Rams' favor Sunday, and coach Sean McVay sounded encouraged by the development.

New York Jets owner Christopher Johnson told reporters at the NFL owners meetings that his team had rescinded its offer to Suh, a five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle.

"That can't be anything but good news for us," McVay said after a reception for attendees.

Said Rams general manager Les Snead: "Time will tell, right? I'm sure in all these situations there's multiple teams usually involved and you never really know when the other teams pull out or not. So we'll wait and see."

Suh, released two weeks ago by the Miami Dolphins, has visited the Rams, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints. The Portland, Ore., native also has reportedly spoken with the Seattle Seahawks.

From reading NY articles, sounds like the owner stepped in and helped reverse that decision, though they don't want to admit it.
