The Guaranteed money doesn't it make it easier for him to walk away?
I don’t think so. It just makes him safe from being cut without pay. He can’t just step away and still get paid.

What about Donald's situation?
If they want to leave, nothing you can do about it. Stafford just got monetary insurance in case he didn’t want to leave.

For the most part, teams can recover signing bonuses and upfront monies paid to a player who retires. It's tricky how the money is paid out though. If Stafford converted his 2024 salary in to a signing bonus that they would pro-rate the cap hit, they could recover a portion of it. However if they convert it to a bonus that he "earned", then they cant recover it (Like a roster bonus)
In the case of Donald, I think there is genuine hope that he may come back so they didnt want any bad blood between them.

Still not sure why OTC lists Donald on the roster. Other teams with players who retired, they moved those player's contracts to their dead money list....not the case for AD.

BTW, looks like they already updated Stafford's contract. You can see above that his dead money would be 100M this year if cut. Meaning they fully guaranteed next yr, and maybe some of 2026.

I think that OTC and Sportrac dont have the exact contract details so they dont know how else to show the hit. Both sites show him on active roster, which he isnt, as they have 91 on active roster when they're only allowed to carry 90.
Very strange indeed

The 91 might be due to Higbee being on the pup list, yet they haven't added anyone lately, so I think it means Donald is still on the roster as well. So he is 90 right now, with Higbee not counting active roster wise.

Players on Pup list count as active player

Just a minor adjustment to his contract. 5 mil more this season then 4 mil more guaranteed next season. Not sure why he even bothered with this.

You say that like $9 million is chump change.

Glad they got it cleared up though. Whatever makes him happy to stay here two more years is good with me. Especially since he clearly wasn't concerned with breaking the bank just needed a little sweetening.

Seriously though? Why bother adding 5 million dollars this year and guaranteeing 4 million more for next year? Because that gives him an extra sense of security and that's pennies to the Rams' organization. Not a "greed grab" by any means. That's a great teammate, great husband, and great father, doing what it takes in his professional and personal life. That's why.

Preach brother.

65 years a fan, and Stafford is my favorite Ram QB ever -
Gabriel, Ferragamo, Everett and Warner rounding off the top 5.

Guess we're stuck with Stafford for a while longer....
The Soul Stealer wants a HOF gold jacket. So, barring injury, it is his plan to 'ball out' for the remainder of his time as the official field general. Considering the manner in which he balled out during the second half of last season, this should be most concerning to opposing NFL defensive coordinators, especially since Matthew's high aerial show is be complemented with a more than solid ground game this time around.

Ngl this is a wild take brother.

I suspect he was paranoid the Rams would jump on a young QB in this recent and very strong QB class. Nothing says commitment like guaranteed money
