Hard to say this with all the positive vibes around the Rams right now, but I'm hoping what I saw from Shields was a result of a little nerves at having to step back into a prominent role.

He clearly has good coverage skills (took a few perfect passes from Cousins to get by him), but man, that TACKLING. Or should I say LACK of tackling.

There were multiple times when he avoided tackles that resulted in first downs for the Queens. One play in particular, it was obvious he positioned himself to be blocked out of the play and he let others bring the guy down.

I'm hoping that this is just a "getting back on the horse" deal and that the concussion fear in the back of his mind isn't a permanent thing.

Our entire secondary got burned or was out of place. Im hoping its just bc of the short week. No reason you let Theilen open as many times as they did.

Shields has to be a little rusty.

Not the quickest CB. He uses his speed to make up ground. Takes chances but, makes plays. I don't think he was ever known for his tackling. First start in two years on a short week he did good. Let's see how he goes from here on.

The communication was not good in the secondary.

I’m not worried about the defense. Thursday night games are weird. Defenses are on a short week and don’t get enough rest. We went through the same thing last season with the Whiners game. The defense will be fine.

This was similar to last years game against the 49ers; high scoring game and it seemed like both defenses couldn't stop each other but eventually defense won that game last year and this year.

Love the fact that Wade put in a rookie with fresh legs to go after the qb to force a fumble. The tackles had to deal with Suh and AD all night from the edges; they were prob worn out.

It's not nerves. He's got an eye discipline problem, first off. Second I don't think he has the deep knowledge of this defense you get with Talib and he's been out of position and exposed a bit. Third even though he's got good cover skills he's probably better served right now in a zone where he can break on the ball, as he definitely has excellent ball instincts.

But he did play better last night than he did last week. Last week was a bad game for him, he wasn't ready and really struggled. So there's hope that this staff can get him to continue to improve. We need him to improve.

Cant talk about Shields missed plays last night without mentioning how great he looks at times too.

Agreed Dieter. He actually might have had a pick six if that one pass hadn't been batted down. Dude was in prime position with a lot of open field in front of him.

But he definitely needs to keep improving. And we also need him to stay healthy. Both those things terrify me.

I don't think anyone can tell from watching a game if a CB did what you are saying. Frankly, I consider these to be a pretty asinine couple of statements.

Ridiculous statement.
My feelings are hurt. Seems like you're questioning my honor. I think Shields did a great job, just hoping the concussion worries aren't permanent so he doesn't avoid contact. I found a boatload of examples, but let's just take a look at the following play:

I don't think you are in a position to judge anyone's intentions. Especially those of a veteran NFL player.

I respect so many of your prior posts that I'm going to ignore your calling my statements asinine.

I also disagree with your claim that I can't tell from watching the game, since I've been watching Rams football for almost 5 decades, and am absolutely certain that what I felt during the game, and what I confirmed afterwards, was a guy AVOIDING contact. I only broke down one play! Be thankful I didn't show the one where he grabbed a defender and held him to avoid tackling COUSINS! The QB!

However, if you want to continue to feel like I'm treating him unfairly, just ignore my various compliments on his play otherwise. You should also ignore my comments about hoping he overcomes this.

I didn’t notice these plays, but I will rewatch and see if I can see it as well. To be honest, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was a little reluctant in his first start in 2 years. I’m completely fine with his play overall. That’s a tough first assignment, and I think he will only get better from here. The Rams are lucky to have him right now.
