I've had friends like that. They come from their job that's MAYBE one step up from waiter, expect to be treated like Louis XIV at a casual dining place, and then leave a tiny tip. Classless, IMO.

And in Pennsylvania, while the minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.83, they are required to get the $7.25 minimum wage either ways. So if they don't accrue enough tips, the employer just has to pay the minimum wage out of their pocket. So in the end, the hourly wage is somewhat misleading. They're guaranteed $7.25 either ways.

That's fair. Gives you and the employer a chance to make extra, while at least providing you with a minimum that's not totally awful if it happens once or twice a week.

and the outcome of that is better service + bigger tips= more profit for owners...... That I could live with.

Usually the only time I leave a bad tip is when the restaurant isn't crowded and I still get lousy service. Went out the other day with wifey for late lunch/ early dinner and the staff was just lounging around playing on their phones while we sat there for almost 10 minutes without even a glass of water. But I suppose @jrry32 math would work..if we are there for a hour and a half..make the tip to equal minimum wage for that time period.

I remember back when I was a teenager, my Dad told me about a guy who left his penny tip in an up-ended glass of water. You take a piece of paper, put it on top of the glass, flip the glass over so the paper is now on the table, then slide the paper out from under. Now that's an insult.

I used to do that with a quarter when I first started going to bars 30 years ago when I was 18... I learned quick not to do it

It is not being a jerk it is sending a message that your unsatisfied. When you got to someplace to spend your money you should expect service to make you want to be there. If you are not getting it you have every right to let your server know you are unhappy. It is your money you are spending, expect more.

Totally agree you pay for service IN the price of the food to begin with,if you don't get it your only recourse is to express it in the tip,or you could call the manager and just out with it and say "the service was terrible ,I'm not leaving a tip,if you find that unacceptable ,what are you willing to do about it".

Service is a dying art ,in a nation where service is the direction the economy is evolving to,as far as the restaurant manager publicizing this ,I can't imagine the owner appreciates it, that kind of publicity can't be good.
Looks like a lose lose situation all round to me.

And I agree with this.

I pay for service as well.

If something is wrong with the service, I speak up.

Mistakes happen, cooks screw up or take too long, that's all just part of life.

If the guy/girl just doesn't care or is rude, then that's another thing. I've found that to be very rare. And again, I call them on it, because they might be having a bad day and just not realize it. People have lives outside of your own wants and needs.

If it turns out that they do not deserve a tip from me, I don't leave one.

I don't try to leave some cryptic message by leaving a .20 or .01 tip. Be an adult, explain your displeasure. Don't play games and just be a jerk.

$2.83 per hour, $2.13 per hour. Makes no difference. Servers make their money on tips, not hourly wages.
In an 8 hour shift, the server needs to make $36 in tips to get the owner off the hook. Big frickin deal. So as long as the other customers tip normal, McCoy is justified? Just ridiculous.
I waited on Tom Kelly and his family when I was a kid, and he was manager of the World Series winning Twins. I was nervous as heck and botched it. I dont remember the details, but I was a kid, and he was an adult still left a huge tip.

There is always two sides to every story. That being said, if the service was so bad why not tell the manager as opposed to leaving a .20 tip. That is uncalled for. I lean that way too.......if the service was so bad you only left 20 cents on over 60 bucks then saying something to the manager or even the waiter himself is appropriate IMO.
