@Neil039 , I know, I know....I should have wrapped the Porterhouse with a pound of bacon. Aploogy accepted?

In Vancouver we have an annual event called the HopScotch festival. 120 booths with different whiskeys and beers to sample.

It costs $50 to get in the door and expect to spend another $50 or so on tokens.

It is great way to sample different whiskeys to determine what you like.

Usually I focus exclusively on Scotch. One year I sampled various bourbon, Canadian whiskey, Irish whiskey & even Japanese whiskey.

My preference is a single malt Scotch with moderate peat flavour.

Wow. I'm not much of a drinker. Mostly Mich Ultra. But, reading this thread has got me going ape shit for scotch.

What should I try for my first real drink of scotch?

I've been thinking Johnnie Walker Blue. Anyone tried it? Is it good or not worth the mula?

@rdw warning on Ardbeg. It has an acquired taste as it is heavy peat and has strong notes of charcoal filter similar to Jack Daniels. But if you enjoy that kind of smokiness, props and enjoy.

Broke down and bought some Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10. WOW. It look a minute to get acclimated to a smoky scotch but I certainly enjoyed it. Just picked up the Ardbeg 10 last night. Both are great but I think I like the Bruichladdich a bit more.

Love the floral scotches as well. Just love the variety available to me depending on what I'm in the mood for.

This is the review that got me interested in the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10.

JW Blue is my go to.
I always have a bottle or two about just in case.
I think it’s worth it.
Opinions my vary.

Just picked up a JW Double Black... pretty good! I've only had Blue once and enjoyed it but the bartender put an ice cube in it and I really wanted to try it neat but didn't want them to pour it out. I'd some point I'll break down and pick up a bottle.

i like Johnnie Walker , it’s a good blend … anything with talisker in it can’t be bad.

I've had quite a few bottles. My crew usually gets it for my Christmas present. It's some good stuff! Like others have said (@ScotsRam in particular, very knowledgeable) a little water or big ole round ice cube is best. It does release the flavors a little better. Lapraig is very peaty or smoky flavor, JW Double Black also has a peat/smoky taste just not as strong. JW Green, don't like at all. Oban is a great single malt which is different from JW which are all blended. Believe it or not, Costco has some good tasting Scotch whiskey for like every day drinking. I like all my Scotch with ice. Personal preference.

Yes, for a blended not bad at all. Costco has some comparable blended bottles similar to JW, just a little bit more fruity but at a 3rd of the cost of JW.

EDIT: I should qualify that JW Black is my everyday drink so I'm not at all opposed to a blended.

My collection is up to 65 bottles. We are buying a new build house which will be ready in March 22 so I am gonna have to get a sweet set up to display all my whisky.

My GF goes apeshit every time a new bottle appears!

Excellent - I'll be over for the housewarming party with my Glencairn in hand.

Drinking a Balvenie 12 double wood. Very good pair with a cube to moderate the peat, and open the sherry and caramel flavors. Cheers!

Going to visit Deanston distillery tomorrow, tour and tasting. Will put up some pics. I will definitely get pissed and buy expensive whisky I do not need.
