7 miles this morning...1:14 minutes

have an application for a half marathon right on my 50th Birthday, and some friends who will do it with me. I have set a goal for 2 ours, but starting to think it is unrealistic. But I am pushing on !!!!

I didnt say that at all.
Runners code basically says that you shouldnt put time goals on your first long distance race, goal should just be to finish. And enjoy the ride
Actually check that, main goal should be to avoid injury.
Hopefully you'll follow a training program. If you are at 7 miles now, you are totally on track for a finish. Following a training program will let you know where you stand time wise

These calcualtors can be pretty good guides. A month or so ago you posted that you ran a trail 5k in 29:49. That equates to a 2:18 half marathon. That was on hills and you hadnt even begun to train. So yeah, I dont think 2 hours is unrealistic

Hahaha....that was a good one. I laughed pretty hard at that. I think you can do it. You would need a 9 min and 38 sec pace to get your 2 hours. You aren't that far off. Plus you will always run faster on race day but to echo dieter's statement just don't hurt yourself. However, finishing the race itself if a huge accomplishment and you will feel like a real champ.

If you have a local track that you can run on, you can do some speed work there.
Warm up with a mile jog, real slow. Then run some quarter mile repeats. Try to run a quarter mile in 2:15, then jog a quarter (or even walk a bit) repeat 4-5 times. Finish with a slow mile
Its a fun workout, and will build speed faster than you think

I like to follow training plans when I run marathons, but I'm not a huge fan of speed workouts on the track.
In fact, I dont like running on the track at all....

Pretty easy was to map out a run where you can have some mileposts. I found a loop around my neighborhood thats exactly 1 mile long. I leave a water bottle at the half mile mark and run half fast, half slow.
Another run I enjoy doing, (but it requires owning a garmin or downloading an app that has GPS capability) I dont look at my watch for the entire run, but each mile I try to run faster than the previous one. I do that quite often while the speedwork shouldnt be done more than once a week, even every other.

I use the Samsung health app which gives me my splits every 1/2 mile, along with my avg pace and estimated time of completion.

There are no local tracks close by here, but down to the beach, along the beach road to the town beach parking lot, and back to my house is almost exactly 3.1 miles.

As I said, the app I use gives me my splits, so I use that to help me along. Have been trying to keep a steady pace as I go along, then pour it on for the last mile.

Dieter I am like you I don't particularly care for the track but if I do speed work I tend to do it on the track because it nice a flat and I don't have to contest with hills. I have a Garmin 410 watch so I can go anywhere and just run. If I am down in the city I try to run through historic neighborhoods. It is great scenery and a good distraction. I have a camel back I where when I run because I don't like to carry anything in my hands and I always have water. On shorter runs I try and pick up the pace and push my tempo to as close to race pace as I can get without exhausting myself. The long runs it is slow and study. I just try to find my groove and really settle in. I also like mixing in a hilly course at least once a week short or long to push the legs.

Ok guys, need some advice here. I have dropped almost 20 lbs that I can ill afford to lose. Down to about 150 on a 5 10 frame.Any advice on diets to keep weight on, Since I burn about 1000 calories per run, plus banging nails all day, and on an almost 3000 calorie diet as it is,I can't shove any more food in
