Rams sign Ronnie Rivers

With each day closer to the draft, the Rams are crushing my hopes of ever getting a RB1 but instead are stuck with average RBs like Kyren, an unknown in Corum and the new Troy Reeder of the team, Ronnie Rivers.

Sigh.

Kyren average? Since becoming a starter in 28 games he's had over 2800 total yards and 31 total touchdowns. Not sure what you're expecting but Kyren is one of the leagues better running backs. Of course if you're expecting a first team all pro I suppose that would be disappointing. For me I'm fine with him as the RB1.

Might just turn out to be a camp body this year with this draft coming up.

It just disappointing to me that McVay doesn't seem to notice the effect that bigger backs like Royce Freeman and C.J. Anderson had on opposing defenses. At least from what I saw, some guys were making business decisions out there. He should at least have one bigger back on the team. Change of pace please.

Yeah, he's average. He's a volume and goalline merchant. I have to find the thread where I broke it down this year with his carries vs yards/avg and everything considering the OL rank and a bunch of stuff shows he's not near as impressive as people think.

I like Rivers... but I do hope we add a bruising you RB we can develop. We've slid Rivers down to the practice squad safely before so that's an option.

I do want us to draft a RB late or certainly bring in some udfa options

I love K-Will as a person, especially since he grew up as a St. Louis kid idolizing S-Jax…but the fumbling has caused me to lose faith in him as a running back.

Perfectly stated @Memento . I'm sure most of us like him as a person. During games, Ram fans are nervous when he's toting the rock. His numbers are really good, sadly it's easy to lose sight of them when the ball hits the turf.

No extension yet, we all know Sneed works at his own pace.

Kept Stafford and Jackson and signed Adams. Other than that they've done nothing to move the needle. Hope they nail the draft.

That said, I think between him and one solid offensive addition in the draft, that should be enough to be significant improvement over last year.

It's a start for sure. But my comment really was that aside from the 3 I listed they haven't moved the needle much. People cited Poona and yes he's good but I was referring to offense. I would have liked money at ILB or CB on defense but guess we're going to have to get that in the draft.

Completely agree. McVay likes interchangeable pieces. But we either need a sledgehammer RB, or....

...isn't this exactly what "bigger backs" are known for? So why dump Kyren if we draft an RB high? Any one of the bigger faster backs in this loaded RB draft would be an amazing pair with KW. You run the big fast guy in the first half, jump out to a lead, then grind them down with KW. Ballgame. And it keeps the big fast guy fresh for a deep run thru the playoffs, unlike how we over-used Gurley, his knee gave out, and we had to get CJ off the scrap heap just to make it as far as we did.
To illustrate my point: What if McVay had KW during the Gurley years? This is exactly what he'd do, and KW would still chew up lots of yards after Gurley blew up the scoreboard. After chasing Gurley for a half, you're exhausted & just can't catch that shifty KW. Gurley would've lasted longer, and, well....
...anyway, I hope you see my point. I'm really hoping that we *still* get another RB in this draft, either a high pick, or Tuten or another faster RB later.

Yes and I'll say that I think both Skattebo and Martinez are going to be studs in the NFL. One or both of them may end up getting hurt early on, as happens with the RB position. But I think both of them are more than just some big dude toting the ball. Martinez reminds me a lot of Lynch when he came out, that combo of strength and contact balance, some vision and surprising athleticism. Skattebo is very similar and I think potentially dangerous in the pass game as he has good ball awareness for shit like torching backers or safeties on seam routes or turning dumpoffs in the flat into big gainers.

This is why, as much as I do like Hampton and a lot of the speed options in this draft, I'd rather see the Rams opt for some power addition to the backfield. I think McVay's offense is outstanding with that threat and they could get it in round 3 from either of those two above. And there are other power options, this class is something man. Lot of teams are going to have good backfields after this draft.

Some power would be great too. KW + Skattebo would be a great combo, two very different backs.

My biggest concern with SKattebo is his size. Hes 5-10 and 212 lbs with short arms and small hands. Is he a Tavon Austin or Tutu where he finally reaches a level where he cannot overcome his physical shortcomings? That could be a risk for a third round pick.

Martinez on the other hand is 6’ 217 with long arms. Plus he’s projected as a 5th round back.

Neither is a great pass catcher but short arms are a drawback in that area.

Yeah you don't draft either of those dudes to be Faulk. You draft them to hammer that ball up a team's ass when you get a good lead. And if they can catch the occasional pass as a surprise to the defense that is fine.

Reason I mention Skattebo is he made some good plays in the pass game like that. So he is at least aware of the ball, can track it etc. He has some skills for that surprise use.
