Rams FS LaMarcus Joyner graded as PFF top NFL DB after opening day breakout

It was quite the dominant opener for the Rams, who continued to tee off of the battered Colts in a 46-9 destruction. New Rams starting free safety LaMarcus Joyner played a pivotal role in that with his spectacular play in his new role.

Joyner was nothing short of excellent this week after he switched from a career nickel cornerback to the free safety position. It's early, by early I mean extremely early, but this position switch could mean the Rams possibly have their "Honey Badger". Joyner finished the day with four solo tackles, two pass breakups, and a pick-six. To cap off an excellent day at the office, Pro Football Focus graded Joyner's play at a 93.1 overall that puts him as the top graded at not only safety but as the top overall defensive back.

Obviously, it's imperative to temper expectations seeing as he was in charge of defending against a career backup QB Scott Tolzien and a QB that came in towards the end who had only been with the team for eight days to that point. Joyner will likely have a way tougher competition in the form of Pro Bowl QB Kirk Cousins next week versus the Washington Redskins. If Joyner can keep this going this Rams secondary will start to look fierce moving forward. Between both Trumaine Johnson and Joyner showing up in the end zone and terrorizing the QB, this could be a scary secondary incoming for the rest of the league.

Clearly, the Wade Phillips effect is alive and well. The Rams will need more of this elite play out of LaMarcus Joyner moving forward, but for now, this is a serious foundation to build off of.

I've been skeptical of his height for a long time. I hope he keeps this okay up and makes me eat my words. However we did play a shit team so it'll be interesting to see how he plays for the weeks to come.

I'm just waiting to see those who were hatin' on Joyner. Wanna see what those dudes have to say... at the end of the season, not one game.

This is a good start for him and the defense as a whole. It's expected by me since I've seen Joyner since FSU days. There is no need for anyone to say 'told you so', Joyner will let his play do the talking and convince the doubters; book it. Dude has a knack for the ball.

You just called a lot of ROD members a dumbass too lol. He can't catch, he can't cover, yada yada.
No one is calling ROD members dumbasses -lol. But I think we ALL would have liked Fisher to give Joyner a "look" at free safety. The jury is still out, but if Joyner continues to pay well... the fish will start to rot!

This was the Joyner most of us saw from college. Its only one game but im cautiously optimistic this will be more the norm than not throughout the year. This should be his best pro career under Wade Phillips in his actual best position (y)

I was really worried about LJ this pre season. Never seemed to get UN tracked. Guess he saved it for regular season;). LJ is a small short condensed DB who I believe could be a long term Captain for this secondary into the future. I have waited for this since he was drafted.

I was a Joyner hater....He played well:yay::yess::banana:...His best play still came at nickle-back/slot-corner....so, the jury is still out as a free safety.

Bunch of you Florida guys can rest easy....But we play :double:Washington....and a very different :wabbit:QB...that has a lot to prove after a bad game. :shooting:TE's will be factored...I wanna see Joyner and Mo play better. That Colts TE was gashing us:puke:.

Anyone know how Mo played yesterday? Is Mo out of position?
Defense played well....Mo really only had opportunities vs some Colts TE...and a few runs that broke through...So there's no telling how he's doing at SS....Too soon to say if he's out of position...But if he's not a SS, what is he? A LB? FS???? I think he's perfect where he's at...

Plus, since our defense was on the field much less than we are accustomed to after the last 5 years, you have to factor in each of these players had fewer opportunities to make plays. I expect that dynamic to be in play much more this season ...
