Not about hating Bennett. Just lamenting a missed opportunity to maybe have Stafford's heir apparent in the building right now.

Would feel a heck of a lot better about the future if we had O'Connell. I think the brain trust got a little too cute again with this pick. Like they wanted to show that they know better than others.

Bennett has had had at least 4 to 5 turnover worthy throws thus far in about 5 quarters of football. That's a bit concerning.

Also cannot find his grade point average at Georgia. Very odd IMHO.

You may be right, and we have seen it before with this braintrust. As much as I like Bennett's moxie and quick release, I do worry about his size and decision making.

I don't think that pick was the Rams getting too cute. I think him being the pick was a result of laser focus on finding a backup QB who can handle the job as a rookie. They weren't looking for a QB of the future. Should they have been? Probably. But it's understandable in an offseason like this.

What matters for us now is Bennett cleaning things up and settling into that backup job. And from there hopefully we don't need him year one.

Yeah, it's also easy to look at a guy like O'Connell and go he's playing well, he'll be a QB of the future when those guys almost never work out in the later rounds. And because they almost never work out, we drafted a kid who has moxy and is a gamer but lacks many other things.

We drafted a kid we thought could steal some games as a spot starter whereas some of these other backup QBs may just compete as a spot starter but never produce the 1-3 plays in a game that rips the win away from the other team.

Maybe that's not the right strategy, but it's what we did.

The defense stonewalled the Panthers on the first series. Again, if a player is not injured I embrace that philosophy just to give that first unit some real game reps. Other teams will keep injured players off the field like Kupp for example, but most will give their guys at least one series.

I can't recall what coach said he was going to start doing that or even if he did.
Could be a coaching carousel thing too.

Here's where I am at. If you're going to expend a 4th round pick on a QB or any player for that matter he needs to be a guy that will push for playing time and then become a starter sooner rather than later. Most everything I've heard on Bennett is that he was taken to become a backup, not a starter.
It's almost like he is not considered to be QB 1 starter material for any number of reasons. It's my opinion that guys like this should be taken no earlier that the 6th round. Why? Because there are still prospects on the board in the 4th round that WILL become starters at some point and some will become stars and even Pro Bowlers.

Now I know that many will say how do I know that Stetson Bennett will just be a career backup? Well I don't except that none of the pre draft publications mentioned that he could become a NFL quality starter at QB. Of course the main reasons for this has been discussed on ROD namely: he doesn't have a strong arm and he is smaller in stature and is already 25 years old.

To sum it up I am going to support Stetson Bennett because he is a Ram now; but if we are all about a rebuild then it is my opinion that we botched the 4th round by taking a guy that is NOT considered to be starting material.

I agree with that thought for every position ... except Quarterback.

Of all the projected starting QBs this season (if healthy), I believe Purdy is the only one drafted after the 4th Round; and, he's competing with two first rounders.

Among the other 31, I believe only two were selected in Round 3 (Wilson and Ridder); and two more in Round 4 (Prescott and Cousins). Maybe I am missing one or two; and I did count Murray in AZ as soon as he is healthy.

As someone who did not like the Bennett pick, because I didn't like what I knew about the person.. I don't understand the overreaction.
Bennett looks like a pretty good investment for a 4th rounder to me.

One observation.. very limited playing time, of course.. Alaric Jackson is the left tackle and there's no competition. He moves people.
He'll improve with more and more reps, imo, in pass pro.. but he's a man.

All fair points. I can only admit that I don't stack boards and all that so I don't really have a valuation in mind as it pertains to QBs and rules for when they should go off the board. So for myself there were two reasons I was luke warm on Bennett right after the draft.

The first reason is because I am of the mind that height matters, and I like my QBs at least at that 6'2" range or above. There are some outliers but I don't want a QB who the book on him is to keep him in the pocket. I want a QB who can win from the pocket.

Second reason was because I had looked at all the film I could find for these QBs and my favorite was the kid from BYU. So when they took Bennett in round 4 with some of those other guys still on the board I was a bit disappointed. And for the record O'Connell had some good film but I never really felt great about him, think it was his body language or something I can't quite put my finger on. Bennett I probably spent my time smirking about what a great team he had around him. But of course I am no evaluator I'm just some dude pounding beers and imagining guys behind center for us.

Long way to go but my instincts on the guy tell me he's going to be fine as a backup QB. And who is to say he won't be a starter at some point. I fully get your point and even Philly's, though of course I think Philly gets silly at times and I consider fapping to O'Connell's preseason games to be one of those times. :laugh3:

Every little thing is over analyzed and picked apart to death. Especially by all the beat and sideline reporters. I'm gonna stay the hell off twitter or x or whatever they call it now during games.

You don't spend a Day 3 pick on your heir apparent to your franchise QB. If you land a future franchise QB on Day 3, you're lucky as hell. You draft backup QBs on Day 3. Be realistic.

Additionally, I'll just point out that it's far easier to look good when you're the third QB off the bench and going against guys who are practice squad players at best in the preseason, rather than the other squad's first and second team players.
