Arson was ruled out as well as possible terror-related motives, officials said. Officials said the blaze could be linked to renovation work. The cathedral was in the midst of a $6.8 million renovation project.

Sounds like they know it started by accident.

Wow. .. .. ... I just saw some pictures of the aftermath online and it's horrible.

400 firefighters and the blaze was so bad it took them nine hours to put it out. Congratulations to them on a job well done it could have been much much worse from everything I've read.

One would think forgiveness would be in order considering what burned, if it indeed was an accident.

Right. I would think that the worker's already been punished enough. They probably feel the worst over it.

I doubt the government will punish him - but if it got out that he caused it, undoubtedly there would be a not insignificant number of people acting out

That's my worry.

Anybody have any updates on the damage?

@LoyalRam Ancient Palmerya? For as much as I consider myself a history buff I'm totally ignorant to this. Let me google search this real quick.

Pretty impressive really

When I first saw those first pictures , especially those after it got dark

I thought maybe it was going to be a total loss

but now , the fact that the fire is just not under contained , but actually out

pretty impressive , really have to give those fire fighters a pat on the back

looks like most of the fire was contained to the ceiling , with alot of the stain glass windows , and marble statues still intact

I imagine most paintings are gone , not just from the fire , but just from the heat or water damaged

as devastating as it was was , I actually imagined much worse

again , credit to those fire fighters

And the award for the fastest fire investigation ever goes to.....

They determined they cause, or rather eliminated some causes before the fire was even out! I’m impressed.

The roof isn’t a huge deal in general but the spire is a huge loss. Apparently had some relics inside of it as well. But the ultimate tragedy is the melting of those stain glass windows that were 800 years old. Wood roofs can be replicated easily enough. Not sure they can replicate those windows perfectly.

Much much more lost than stained glass windows. Bad news is released as a drizzle since the true amount of loss still isn't known and will be cause for a downpour. The list of losses will continue to grow but your expectation of same will be tempered by the drizzling.

Mmmmk.

Skepticism? Well Macron said yesterday the rebuilding will take 5 years. Drizzle drizzle.

There's about half a billion euros so far pledged for the rebuild. Every square inch of the cathedral has been photographed many times. Obviously the relics are not replaceable, but I suspect things like the stained glass can be rebuilt to look identical. I also expect large portions that aren't actually visible can be rebuilt with fire resistant components. The paintings are destroyed naturally - and while they can be replicated with amazing detail, I'm not sure if that's the route they will want to go. They will have complex decisions to make over the coming months.

In recent years much of the structure was laser scanned which will assist in the rebuilding. You can't duplicate stained glass of great age but the rose windows apparently survived so their restoration should be excellent. The issue is materials and most importantly craftsmanship. The quality (in material and workmanship) will never be duplicated because the skill set no longer exists. If someone isn't into antique furniture or historic building materials and techniques then woodwork whether in old growth woods or modern composites isn't an issue. Notre Dame was not Disney Inc. I hope its restoration is as close as possible to the original.

Lol, I don't even know what your trying to get at. /shrug The thing is a tragedy if you think I was making light of it.

I took your response as doubting the drizzling of bad news. I suppose you could look at it in football terms by how the Rams described Gurley's much reduced role in the final month of the season and we still don't have an answer.

Use the various photos and laser scans, offer a prize to duplicate the exact colors (different prize for each color) it will get done. Yeah, the exact materials used might be different - but the results are replicable.
