I was fully prepared, at some point, to pick up a Punter. More specifically Matt Araiza from San Diego State.
Hell two punters were drafted in the 4th round which should of set the urgency before Araiza was drafted at 180 for us!

I believe a big part of our success since McVay has been here has been Hekker holding it down. I was looking for another 10-12 years of a punter leveraging field position for us like a beast!

You can’t tell me some of these guys could contribute more to winning a game than ‘ The Punt God’!

I literally have no idea who our punter is now or what our direction is going to be! I’m sure it’s some random UDFA….

Anybody else have feels along these lines or any updates on our Punter situation?

Yeah it's a concern man. But as I think about the way this offense clicked in the playoffs... They're going to be a different group this year. They're going to be on a roll from day one basically so hopefully there won't be too much punting.

I was hoping for a punter to be chosen but apparently they are happy with Dixon. I'm guessing they will continue to try to have inexpensive punters from here on out until McVay is done. If they drafted one they likely end up paying him more in the long run.

So for this year its either Dixon or Dicker.

Other than that, its hard to have too hard of a take on this draft. Aside from a starting guard, they got a lot of high ceiling/low floor types. They trust the scouts, the numbers and the process. So all you can do is hope that they got some of them right. It sure would have been nice if they could have kept Miller. The second and third round picks could have been some real contributors in this draft.

I have no issues with the draft, although I wouldn't have minded adding a Center/OG in the later rounds or even as a UDFA. Behind Allen & Shelton, I'm not thrilled with our depth, and Kolone is less than inspiring. jmo.

We picked up an UDFA punter. You know an UDFA can be a good punter just look at the last guy we had as our punter. Him and Reilly will compete for the job.

It's early of course but way I'm feeling right now with our positions...

Improved: RB, WR, ILB, CB
Same: QB, OL, DL, TE, S
Worse: Edge
Unknown: FB

Absolutely agree on Edge being the drop off.

Not sure about OL yet. I'll have to see the line succeed together without Whitworth before feeling comfortable.

RB definitely looks better, if only because we are hopefully starting the year with a healthy Akers. Akers/Hendu/K,Will sharing time 50/30/20 when they are all healthy.

Would have really liked to grab an edge player late in the draft.

You are, as is often the case, quite right.

I love his attitude and speed. But he reminds me too much of Garrett; he just may end up being too small for the NFL.

More accurately then, I should have said that I wish they drafted a bigger edge in an earlier round.

We also picked up 3 pass rushing DE's as UDFA's.

Yeah sorry figured maybe you overlooked him. I liked the Garrett selection too last year. You're not gonna get ideal guys late unfortunately, teams are too good at this. If he's bigger then he probably lacks explosiveness or he's stiff or has red flags of some kind.

Also chances are you're right in this draft range. Most of these guys gonna bust but maybe the Rams are just that good. :thumbsup1:

What I don't like about Dixon is he will shank one occasionally and he's had 5 kicks blocked in 6 years. One or even two blocks could be OL mistake or whatever. But 5 in six years means he's slow in getting his punts off. The Broncos drafted him and traded him after 2 years to the hapless Giants. They restructured his contract immediately for some weird reason. Now they want him off the roster so badly they are taking a negative impact trade eating all his guaranteed money this year. The Rams have him for $1M non-guaranteed.

Why the blocks? Because he's trying not to shank one.
Dear Ram Fans Welcome to your new Punter!!!! (n)

You cannot control what 31 other teams do, when you have fucked those picks :)

There were two glaring take aways

The run on punters started earlier than was imagined. How many drafts have there been where punters came off the board that early and often?

The Rams liked one of the CBs that was drafted just ahead of them when they then moved into gear and traded for Hill. That said, in one of the best moves of the draft they picked up our slot corner and starting no2. Brilliant! I mean, simply brilliant

No wonder they were happy with a good days work

I wanted a punter and had a man crush on two H-backs. It’s the same in every draft class but don’t be surprised if we pick up a good punter between now and the start of season if Dixon fails to impress

He's had 1 punt blocked the last 2 years....same as Hekker. Keep in mind, for the shitty Giants where he's averaged 70 punts per year. I don't expect him to be Hekker in his prime but he doesn't have to be. Over the last 4 years, Dixon has had 3 blocked (of 279), Hekker has 2 in 228. Nothing to be concerned over.

Me (to begin the season):

Huge Improvement: ILB
Slight Improvement: QB (2nd Year), WR (until OBJ returns), DL (Backup Experience+), TE (Ditto)
Same: CB (-DWill, +TroyH)
Slightly Worse: HB (Michel was a stud), OL (-Corbett)
Significantly Worse: Edge (Miller was otherworldly)
