Sorry to hear about your pup. I'm allergic to dogs and cats so I've never really felt that bond, but from what I gather, it's often times worse than losing a human friend.

As soon as I read the title, I knew you had lost a dog. I'm with you. I've put down two good ones in the last three years and now I have the best dog I've ever had, a lab named Roxie.

Mari and I had to put our 14 year old lab down yesterday. Everybody's dog is the best dog ever - I get that, and actually, I believe it. Reason isn't important, but she was in obvious pain - spine/hip problems - and it was time. Fortunately (a relative term), my Vet is a friend, and he came by the house, so we were with her at the end.

I added an office on to my house in 2006, and have worked at home ever since, so Mari, Roxy and I have basically been together 24/7 for a long time now. I've had to put dogs down before, but this time is as painful as it gets. Maybe it's my age (67 in a couple weeks), but I don't think so. Read a lot on the web yesterday about grief over losing a pet, and would recommend that to anyone dealing with this. Crying is not an option either - it is required.

I don't usually share this kind of stuff, and don't know how cathartic it is (if at all), but the attitude of all the members here is unique as forums go, and and I just felt like honoring Rox.

Y'all give your dog a hug - he or she probably deserves it.

I'm glad you got to see her out - and on your own terms to spare her suffering. My last dog was taken in at the Vets "for observation" overnight. They called at 3am saying get here quick because she's on her way out but I didn't get there in time and she died all along in a cage. I've never really forgiven them. I could have had her at home with me if they'd told me how ill she was. Sorry for your loss anyway.

Just caught this man. So sorry. I know what you are going through all too well. I have stayed by every dog I have ever had put down and I'm tearing up just thinking about them. Meanwhile my current Lab Sam barks at my boys in the distance. Rest in Peace Roxy. I know you're missed. And thanks for posting this Vegas. I know it was difficult.

I remember losing my golden retriever, Granger, when I was a kid. I was sobbing for days afterwards; I knew him ever since I was four, and he was, like, my first true friend.

I feel for you, man. Rest in peace, Roxy...

That's the sad thing about dogs. They're great companions. We love them dearly. But they don't live as long as we do. Anyone who's owned pets and lived into adulthood has had to experience that loss.

We lost our weenie dog "Herman" a couple years ago when he got out and ran in the street. He was 12. That was tough. Herman was my dog. Now we only have Benny our Chihuahua. He was born in our house and grew up with Herman. They were like brothers. My wife is so attached I dread the day he leaves this earth. He's 9 so he's got some years hopefully. But I know that day will come. My wife can't handle that loss very well. I was closer to Herman than she was but she cried for a week. I just kept it to myself. Maybe I shoulda cried too.

I'm so sorry man. Dogs are so much more then just pets. They're our family and our friend. My golden retriever Sandy is 13 now. She has a hard time walking and basically just sleeps and eats. So we're guessing she has a few months left. I tell her goodbye every single day just in case. But I know it won't matter when the time comes. I'm going to cry like a baby. Sorry again brother.

So sorry to hear you lost your pet bro - it's very hard to get over. Cherish your time with 'em. I've had 8 dogs throughout my short life (29), and loved everyone of them.

Unfortunately my buddy Cubbie I never got to be with much towards the end - he lived to be 14 or 15. Golden retriever/lab/wolf mix. I missed the majority of his last 5 years on this earth, finishing up time on active duty... The thought of seeing him helped me at times get through my deployments, which my last tour in Afghan ended in August 2010. About a month before I came home in November, he had to be put down...Absolutely heart breaking that I couldn't be there with him at the end, or really for most of those 5 years I had spent away.

However in hindsight, part of me questioned if maybe it was better I didn't see him like that - my other dog at the time, Mark, pit/lab/retriever, had to be put down 2 weeks after I was home...it was heart wrenching to watch him try to go to the bathroom but unable to because of a tumor that was blocking his intestinal passage...So much pain and struggle, just tears you apart.

To me, dogs are my world - they're the one thing that I totally have faith in: unconditional love and trust, and will never turn their back on you.

Just makes look down at my current 2 dogs here now - i have a black lab/retriever/pit mix who is my world and rivals Cubbie in pure awesomeness, and another one we adopted thats a greyhound/german sheppard mix. They're both getting up their age, the black one at I think 9 years now and the other at 11. Lol my girlfriend often tells me she gets jealous of the love/attention I show him lol.

We had a Dachshund - lived to be 16 - pound for pound toughest dogs on the planet. Great dog (as are they all).
I'm sure you know this, but others may not - they were bred to go after badgers. With the kind of balls that takes, I've never understood why their back legs aren't longer.:shades:
