SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER?
Tony Manero walking his mojo down the street to "Stayin' Alive"?
Follow up question: What's the theme song you hear in your own head when you're feeling cool? lol.

LION KING
Tell me you never did it. Tell me you never lifted your baby, or cat, or puppy up above your head and yelled out, "AHHHH ZABENYAAAA!"

Wow. Opening scenes. Big Chill comes to mind but I honestly don't remember if the mortuary scenes were at the beginning. I loved the opening for Silverado - a bunch of action and then amazing cinematography. Two of my favorite movies BTW.

Me and my brother saw LOTR Fellowship Of The Ring by accident..The movie we were going to see was sold out so we just picked LOTR. I remember I thought the movie was gonna be wack...

Well after the first scene I knew the series was going to be sooo damn good!

ADDED: Well ok I don't know how iconic ....But one of favorite..... :cheese:

Saving Private Ryan has a pretty powerful opening scene as well.

I think the opening of Apocalypse Now is pretty iconic...
the napalming of the forest to the Doors...great opening to one of the greatest movies of all time imo.

This is maybe a movie not a lot of people have seen. "The Way of the Gun." I watched this because I was just picking random movies on Netflix, and the opening scene made me realize it was gonna be pretty good. It was a really weird movie, but pretty well made.

Anyway, NSFW (AT ALL), so play at your own discretion.

For iconic openings, the Indiana Jones series (the first 3) morphed the Paramount logo into the start of the movie, and the action scenes that began all 3 are memorable.

The opening sequence of the Two Towers, the second movie of the LOTR series, was fabulous. Revisiting the faceoff between Gandalf and the balrog, and continuing it as they both fell. Gandalf in freefall, retrieving his sword better than any Jedi. If you can't remember it, or the accompanying music, you're missing out. Cinematic gold.

As for iconic beginnings, how has no one posted the Star Wars blare that starts each movie?

oh, this is an easy one...

Harold & Maude

does anyone recall the opening scene?

Great movie about how-to and how-not-to live ones life. Also, awesome music if you're a Cat Stevens fan.
