It's not really a mystery - Stafford wants to come back, McVay wants him to come back.

But Stafford doesn't want to play for peanuts - but the Rams have to keep it reasonable for cap situations so they can build the team.

Stafford would make the same basically next year as last year - a contract he agreed to, so seems like the ball his mostly in his court.
I admittedly could be 100% wrong. But I think the issue here is Stafford and McVay want to run it back but Snead wants to move on from Stafford.

I think Les Snead wants to be GM of the Rams for as long as possible. And he knows Stafford has 1-2 years left, and he also knows McVay almost walked away 2 years ago. He doesn’t want all his eggs in the McVay/Stafford basket. He knows one day they won’t be here. I don’t think we will ever see a “fuck them picks” attitude with Snead ever again (unless it’s to trade up for an Andrew Luck type prospect). I think he’d rather draft a young QB and spend the Stafford money on other pieces. It might close the window on winning a SB in ‘25, but it could lead to a bigger window in ‘26 and beyond. Whereas Stafford and McVay are like “fuck that let’s go get another ring NOW”.

I also don’t think Stafford is going to hold this team over the barrel in terms of $$$. The only reason he’s coming back is to win a Super Bowl. I definitely think he’d take less to make sure the roster is where it needs to be.

it's that pesky ol' dollar that's holding things up.

....as in, a $49 MILLION dollar cap hit this year....

Wow. There’s a lot said in that tweet.
“We don’t want to have that go on again” and “I think there’s a lot of love coming from our part”
Really paints a picture of Stafford being the hold up and that last year was a bigger issue than was discussed.
This hopefully is settled asap

Yep and honestly I am not surprised. There were rumors and the Rams are better than most other teams at running a tight ship, so I thought there was more at play than was discussed in the media.

C'mon man... Do you remember the days of Kellen Clemmens? Sean Mannion? Keith Null? Case Keenum? Others who's names I have blocked from memory.... If we lose Stafford, we will suck for years. How will Snead move up to get anyone good in the first round? We don't suck right now so there is no smooth transition to a great new rookie. The only option is to ride Stafford until the end.

My .02 cent observation was that when Stafford signed his extension, he gave a bit of a discount. So when the time came to get some more $$ guaranteed and the Rams balked, it was like “hey I gave you a discount and you won’t throw me a bone of more guaranteed dinero?”

That's how I read it as well. Which is why I felt like how he performed in the playoffs was going to be instrumental. And he performed well. So I'd imagine it will get done but you never know with these things.

Agreed. I was surprised they didn’t do more. But they still had AD on the books. They were close to the cap. I figured they gave what they could and said we will talk next February.

I think this is probably true but I also think Stafford isn’t really playing for the money at this point unless the number is so low that it’s disrespectful.

I really hate the “play for peanuts” line. These dudes are making tens of millions of dollars. I wish that was enough for them.

Stafford is by far their best option. Get him better weapons so he can put up some big regular season numbers and maybe get us a high seed. And figure out the pay.

I think we've got a 1-2 year window with this team, assuming Stafford comes back.

My gut says we're all in this year, similar to the '21 season. This is Stafford's last hoorah, I can't imagine him going to another team at this point. It's either Rams for another 1-2 years or retirement. I don't think he wants to retire. We're too good of a team. We add a couple of pieces and we're a SB team.

I am not in any way saying this will or should happen, just a hypothetical.

I wonder if Brad Holmes was injected with truth serum, if he would take Stafford back and try to trade Goff? Afterall they are at a point where they need to win it all now before they start losing key pieces to FA as there young guys will start getting paid in the next few years.
Problem with that is Stafford's trade gave them the pieces they used to supercharge that roster.

So I think right now the way to view Goff is to see him as your guy to lead you in 2025, but add a QB behind him on the depth chart. At least he's not dealing with age and retirement issues on the mental side. So do that and build the defense better and I think maybe they win it with Goff, but if not then the team is built for a young QB with bigger balls to come in and elevate them.

For me, without Stafford, it's time to remove expectations of any Super Bowl appearances (let alone Super Bowl wins) in the near future. Before Goff and Stafford, we dreamed of having a competent QB, let alone a franchise QB. It's not a simple thing to lose a Stafford and replace him with some reject from another team. Don't bring up stats because that all chicken shyte come the playoffs, if we get back there in the following 5 years after him.
Yes, I agree. We got Bradford. He didn't work out. Not until Warner did we have a elite QB. Then Goff had the potential and did pretty good. We got lucky and got Stafford, he got us another superbowl. He's old. Back to square one soon. McVay has to stay and shine with 1 more qb before he retires. He might like to try a mobile qb with brains and cannon for an arm. Good post sir.
