Oh ye of little faith.

I’m riding with McVay on all these personnel moves. It’s a long season and some of the results won’t be obvious for months but, for right now there’s no reason not to trust him and this staff.

You trust his judgement about special teams? They have been bad since he got here. He's an offensive genius, but there is room for criticism on his other decisions.

McVay and Snead may be falling into that "we are smarter than everyone else" mindset they seem to get into sometimes.
Maybe he will be doing the Kupp treatment and just fair catch everything.
Really don't like a key starter returning kicks.
Whit can certainly return punts.
This choice doesn't make much sense to me.
We shall see.

I believe in 2017 and 2018 we had top 5 and a top 10 unit.

Rams special teams have been trash since Bones' last year in 2019.
He improved the Cowboys' spec teams since 2020 and they've been decent.

Rams Special teams rank:

2016 - 4th (Bones)
2017 - 1st (Bones)
2018 - 9th (Bones)
2019 - 20th (Bones)
2020 - 30th (Bonamego)
2021 - 16th (DeCamillis)
2022 - 29th (DeCamillis)
2023 - 32nd (DeCamillis)

Cowboys Spec teams rank:

2019 - 31st (O'Quinn)
2020 - 11th (Bones)
2021 - 6th (Bones)
2022 - 12th (Bones)
2023 - 12th (Bones)

This is a mistake for a multitude of reasons as many has posted.

  1. Williams is not durable and being a punt returner just sets him up to get hit more often.
  2. The Rams only kept 3 running backs so depth at this position is non existent.
  3. Even if the plan is to give Williams less carries the addition to punt returns negates that.

The fake punt vs the Cardinals in 2019 is what sealed Bones fate. No communication to Sean at all and obviously he was pissed.

I think we have seen that McVay is a great coach and person but the second you do something out of line you’re gone.

Our special teams have been bad since McVay took over, and they are only getting worse as time goes on. This is just asking for injury to our starting RB.
Although frustrating….he has taken us to two Superbowls.

strange....

However, our special teams have been quite bad in most areas - so maybe this is a statement about taking it more seriously.
