Ramsey hits the Dolphins cap for 16+ mil this season, if they trade him they get hit with a 29 mill dead cap hit. And that is with the trading team absorbing the 18-20 mill he's getting paid this year.
So while it's easy to say "Have miami eat some salary" that would increase that cap hit from 29 mill.
I cant see how the Dolphins dont just hang on to him for the season and deal with it next year

Is this factoring in the post June trade? Ian Rapoport mentioned that the dolphins will probably wait until post 6/1 to do the trade so that they can spread out the cap hits.

The same thing that happened to Kupp will happen here. They'll end up cutting him, probably after June 1st, when they don't find a trade partner because of his salary. The question is whether the Rams and Ramsey are interested in a reunion or not.

The problem with that is the Math. The numbers don't appear to work.

Kupp's 2025 cap hit to the Rams was scheduled to be over-$29M.
By releasing him, the Rams saved $7M, with the remaining $22M on their 2025 books as Dead-$

According to OTC, Ramsey's current 2025 cap hit to Miami is $16.7M
A post-June release results in 2025 Dead-$ of $31M.
No savings at all; and his 2025 cap hit, to the Dolphins, would almost double.

Post June 1 only pushes 18 mill of dead cap to '26, the issue is still the same. Trading Ramsey results in a 29 mill dead cap hit *provided* the team who trades for him picks up the remaining tab on Ramsey's $$ (Which appears to be around 18-20 mill)

Ramsey likes McVay and how the Rams operate. If the Dolphins cut him and all things being equal, I don't see why Ramsey isn't a Ram in 2025. The Rams have the cap space and didn't target their greatest need in the draft [CB}. It's almost like a deal has already been made under the table...

I do not know if he is worth the headache. Aside from the Rams there is a disturbing pattern emerging with Ramsey. He burned his bridge in Jacksonville and now he has done the same in Miami. He is not the player he used to be and IMO I'm not sure he is worth his current salary and what it would cost for the Rams to get him in trade. I don't see the CB room as bleakly as some here seem to see it.
Sure they do not have an elite CB1 but the guys the do have can play well enough and they have lot of depth in that CB room. The Rams defense at the end of the season was playing very well with the same group they have now minus Kendrick. Most of these guys are still ascending players with DWil the only question mark due to his age.

A lot of things would have to work out in order for him to play here.

According to Over the Cap, the dolphins save 18 million in 2026 by trading him post June. How cap hits are spread out over 4 years for them at an average of about 7 million per season. So it would appear that trading him post June allows them to spread the hit out over the remainder of the contract. That's how they explained it anyway.

There's a serious need for a facepalm meme here. So much errant thinking going on.

I hate the idea that this team needs to have a roster loaded with big names and all holes filled in order to win a Championship.

Keep the youth movement going McSnead.
What big names “load” this roster? Matthew Stafford, Puca Nacua, and now Verse? Of those three, Matty is the only one we brought in.

Bringing in a guy that is likely at the end of his career to play in a unit that everyone acknowledges is likely a weak spot on the team is loading because he has a name? It’s not like we are brining in a bunch of veterans to take key spots that could be filled by clear rising stars.

I don’t get that at all.

If they trade him, they all of the future cap hits accelerate, 29 mill of dead cap. They can take the hit in '25 vs the 16 mill of cap Ramsey would cost- net 13 mill loss or they can split over 25/26 (post June 1) with 10 mill of dead cap in 25 (net "save" of 6 mill) and the remaining 18+ dead cap to hit in '26

Maybe over the cap is showing a post June trade for each year of his contract? But not what would happen the next season. That would make sense.

Weird that the numbers are different on different websites. Rappaport did say that they would want to trade him after June for cap relief though. I'd assume he got the right info (although not always true).
The numbers arent that far off, OTC isnt showing the impact. Spotrac has it rolled up properly. All of the dead money becomes due once a player is trade or cut. The OTC is not reflecting that.

Yeah I went back and edited the post. I think OTC is showing a post June trade each year of the contract and how it would immediately impact the cap as opposed to how it would influence the entire contract. Which makes much more sense. Are you think the dolphins will just have to outright cut him then? They've mentioned that they need to move on from him.
