Jake Long deciding on Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams

For Jake Long, it appears that it's come down to a fresh start with the St. Louis Rams or a return to the Miami Dolphins.

Long has a contract in hand from the Rams, while the Dolphins have made it clear how far they're willing to go to financially to retain Long, according to team sources.

NFL.com's Jeff Darlington reported Saturday that the offers from the Rams and Dolphins are very similar in terms of total worth.

According to Breer, Long is back home in Florida making a decision. His eventual signing should spark further movement on the offensive tackle market. Fellow free-agent tackles Andre Smith and Sebastian Vollmer are represented by the same firm as Long.

ESPN reported early Friday morning that the Dolphins were making a "strong push" to re-sign Long, who entered the market looking for an annual salary that matched the $11 million he averaged over the first five years of his career.

He's unlikely will sniff that, no matter where he ends up.

No doubt about that, and I just hope Jake sees that we are better and will be better than the Dolphins for a very long time. I just hope we didn't have to offer him something that would largely effect our cap space.

Like I wrote in another post. I really think the Rams feel that they have a legit chance at Jake Long otherwise they would be on the phone with other player's agents right now.

Miami had all this cap space, right? $40 million if I am correct. So if they wanted Jake Long back so bad, why didn't they Franchise Tag him? I understand the cap hit would be $12 million. That would've left them $28 million in cap space, plus they released LB's Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby the first day of free agency opening up $5 million more in cap space.

So they would have had plenty of cap space to have tagged and kept Long if they wanted.

True, but I believe he still has to pay income tax on the games that are played in states with income tax

Plus, the lack of state income tax is deceiving. For instance, yes Florida does not have a state income tax but they have higher sales tax. Let's face it, the state government is going to get it's revenue in one form or the other. Any financial adviser/agent worth his/her salt will make that well known.

The other thing to balance (if it's purely about money) on contracts that are equal is cost of living. The cost of living in St. Louis is significantly cheaper than Miami.

Missouri has a state tax. Seven states do not: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

Two other states, New Hampshire and Tennessee, have only a limited income tax - taxing only dividend and interest income.

They probably didnt think they would have any money left after there free agent frenzy. They prob got a few olayers chesper then expected and they wanted to get long for ANYTHING less then the 12 mill he was gonna get

They have a LOT of cap space, I don't think that was the issue. I think the issue was Jake Long wanted to move on and get a fresh start. That's probably why his O-Line is trying to get Jake Long to stay with the grassroots twitter campaign. My guess is that Jake Long wants a fresh start. His wife wants to stay, his friends and teammates are trying to get him to stay as well. Unless he was trying to use the Rams for leverage anyway, but if that was the case I think he would have signed with Miami already. Unless he's trying to hold off to make it seem like he wasn't doing that so he doesn't look like a dick.


Who knows, hopefully he picks a team tomorrow.

Again I'm not upset if he stays in South Beach which I think he will because of his wife and I'm okay with that. The question will be will the Rams look toward another veteran OT or set their sights on D.J. Fluker with the 16th pick?

If I had to guess;

ST LOUIS ADVANTAGES

I think Jake likes the coaching situation in St. Louis better. It's a more stable situation top down.

I think Jake sees the overall situation in St. Louis (team wise) to be stronger with a higher probability to win games. We might have some holes, but a lot of the big pieces are nailed down.

St. Louis is a fresh start and I suspect has the better offer on the table. Perhaps he feels somewhat jaded by the way Miami handled his free agency.

MIAMI ADVANTAGES

Let's face it; they have the more glamourous city. Jennifer Lopez owns a piece of the team... LOL.

It's hard to know for sure, but it appears his wife is heavy into the Miami scene. A status thing.

It's his "home team". He doesn't have to do anything except sign the contract.

WHAT HAPPENS?

If I had to guess; I think the fact he hasn't decided yet gives some hope for St. Louis and he truly likes the direction of the team... but I suspect he stays in Miami because of ancillary reasons, like his wife, his home, etc.

I will say this; if he chooses St. Louis - he's coming here to win. The offers are probably not that much different.
